Planning a trip with my family(2 adults, 2 kids) to SF. We have tickets to go to an A's game. We are staying at Fisherman's Wharf area. What is the best transportation method to get to the game. Is there any security concerns traveling for an evening game?

BART to the Coliseum. Thousands of people do it, it will be fine. When you take BART do the reverse, or get off at Powell and get a taxi.

So here are my thoughts for two options:
Taxi-BART
1. Take a taxi to the Embarcadero Station (near the Ferry Building) and then take a green, red, or blue BART train to the Coliseum Station. Then reverse when returning. I think a taxi trip to the Embarcadero BART station will be faster and cheaper than the Powell BART station. It is a shorter taxi ride along the waterfront. Online calculators estimate a cheaper fare.
MUNI-BART
1. Take the MUNI F street car line that goes along the waterfront from Fisherman's wharf and get off at the Embarcadero Station and then take red, green or blue line to Coliseum BART station. $2/adult person on MUNI says about 4 minutes from Fisherman's Wharf to Embarcadero Station.

I'm just thinking, late at night where would a group rather be? Either would be fine and Embarcadero would be cheaper.

Hey! I hope the op won't mind me jumpin on this.
I'm going to A's vs Yankees in July, and leaving from Grant Plaza Hotel (465 Grant Avenue). GoogleMaps is suggesting to take metro rail -- is that an option? And for BART, how to find the closest stop to where I will be?
Thank you!!

Well, if you are going to Yankees v. A's, just take a short walk to Montgomery St. BART and take BART to the Oakland Coliseum stop. (Take either the Fremont or Dublin/Pleasanton line - all eastbound lines (there are 4) will leave from the same platform.
If you are going to A's v. Yankees, you will be nearly 3000 miles from the stadium.

Is this the same that GoogleMaps is suggesting? Or is there a metro rail and then there's BART? Because it seems that both of them are following the same routes. Also, will BART (or anything else) will be running later in the evening after the game?
And yeah, didn't realize I've mentioned the game wrong haha :)

Muni Metro covers the same route as BART through downtown SF. You don't need to get on MUNI - just BART the whole way. Both will be options in the same station. (Different fare machines, different entry gates.) BART runs until shortly after midnight. If for some reason you are in a serious extra-innings situation, I'd walk back over to the station (from the stadium) starting at 11:30.

Agree with Eastbay 1K about BART to the A's v Yankee game. And yes, watch out for BART's 12AM cutoff.

So if I'm late for last BART train at 12AM midnight, are the other metro trains going the back to SF downtown after 12AM, or do they all stop at the same time?

Muni Metro only exists within San Francisco. BART is your only option.

MUNI Metro shares 4 stops with BART - Embarcadero, Montgomery, Powell and Civic Cenrter - but therty are 2 separate systems. To get back to SF from the Coliseum in Oakland you MUST be ON the last train which leaves shortly after midnight.

Wow, okay, I will need to keep this in mind. Thanks!

If you miss the last BART train, your option would be to take a taxi for around $50, so not that cheap if you're not splitting the ride.
As others said, BART is regional rail transportation. MUNI is San Francisco's public transit system (buses, light rail/street cars including cable cars). MUNI just happens to share some station locations (with completely separate entrances) with BART.

Visit the BART site to look at the schedule. Last train looks to be around 12:23AM into SF.

Hm, okay seems clear. Thanks. I shouldn't be late for midnight train though after the game that starts at 7PM, right? I read that the trains are going like every 10min or something until midnight

Strictly speaking you have another option for crossing the bay after the last BART, and that's the AC Transit night owl bus (the 800). It goes from downtown Oakland to downtown San Francisco every hour during the night, and there's connecting buses from various other places around the East Bay which meet up with it.
It's a fairly awful experience all round, though, unless you enjoy immersing yourself in a crowded cesspool of the worst that the human race has to offer for 90 minutes or so. I often catch it in the other direction because I'm a cheap-... and I know exactly how to do it, but... it's no fun.
