Two companies applied for the internet domain .sas, on of the companys beeing the airline. The other company is listed as Research IP LLC

It's impossible to say who gets in in the end, but if Scandinavian Airlines get it we could possible see their webadresses changing in the future.

For example:
http://dk.sas/
http://se.sas/
http://no.sas/
http://fly.sas/
http://www.sas/
or even just http://sas./

and so on.

sadly the sas institute blocks the sas.com domain... scandinavian.com was also squatted, the current flysas. and scandinavian.net are a stopgap solution that is also not very intuitive.:o

I wouldn't call it blocking. SAS Institute is a large international corporation with over 12,000 employees, and indeed their company is referred to as "SAS" so it's no surprise they bought sas.com. They probably just bought it before SK, which based on the IT competence of SK reported in this forum, is not surprising.

To be fair the two SAS could have shared a landing page and then split from there...

To be really fair, a company protecting their brand should not be forced to split it with another company just because the other company did not follow the same course of action.

If I were a shareholder in SAS (the business analytics compnay) I would not be happy if my landing page were split with another brand for any reason.

My employer shared a name with a large construction equipment company also based in the same town. We had a decently sized reference on each of our websites, saying something like 'looking for SAS the airline? click here'

This could be a fair solution.

Especially given that SAS is a client of SAS (the airline being the client of the business analytics organization that is!).

There are no shareholders in SAS Insitute, it is a privately held company ;-)

Jokes aside, there were some tensions over the name between SAS and SAS at a point. The airline initially trying to block the software company's use of the name in the Nordic countries. Can't remember the details though. So I guess they were not really set on sharing the domain at a later point.

Privately held companies have shareholders as well- it just may not be disclosed who they are.

I actually don't know of any company that does not have at least one shareholder within any legal system I have worked with (not all, but quite a few).

On a separate note- thanks for the background on SaS- interesting.
