I'm planning a trip to New York City, and debating whether to stay at the Marriott Marquis or the Algonquin Hotel Times Square. I've stayed frequently at the Marquis, which I like, but never at the Algonquin. Any recommendations? Also, does the Algonquin have a Concierge lounge? Thanks.

Two completely different experiences. The Algonquin has just re-opened after a 4-month renovation. I stayed here pre-renovation last fall, and it was a wonderfully old-world place, a feel I hope (and believe) they have kept. The renovations did add a concierge lounge, which was lacking when I was there.

I was going to do a link to my 'trip report' from a previous stay at the Algonquin, but if it's been renovated & there's now a lounge, it would be outdated.

Here's the link, as some stuff might be the same (ie, small size of rooms, etc).

If someone stays there on a weekend, if you could post whether the lounge is open on the weekends, if closed, do they offer brekkie coupons, if closed, is it key accessible for sodas, is there an i-net terminal. Please post & I'll update the thread.

Thx!

Was looking at both the Algonquin and Marquis for a trip in July and decided to go with the Marquis after being informed by the Platinum reservation desk that the Algonquin Lounge is closed on the weekends and no breakfast vouchers are offered. They apparently called the property and got that information. Did not verify it myself.

Thanks - I'll update the exec lounge sticky thread. BTW - I'm pretty sure the Marquis lounge is also closed on the weekend, but at least the rooms are larger.

Cheers.

Correct. Was thinking about the San Francisco Marquis where I'm staying the weekend before with open lounge on Saturday and Sunday. Does the New York Marquis give breakfast vouchers for Platinums? If not, any other New York properties have an open lounge or free breakfast on the weekend?

Thanks.

Edit: Called the Platinum reservations line - said they do offer free breakfast on the weekend. Called the hotel to confirm - they said "9 times out of 10 you can get a breakfast voucher upen check in depending on availability at the restaurant." Guess we'll have to wait and see what happens at check in. I'll report back after my stay to update the thread.

always seems to amaze me how some folks will go out of their way to pay an extra $100/night rate in order to get "free breakfast" as the "free breakfast" is the sole determining factor on where one chooses to stay! maybe eggs in NYC are really made of gold............

When I stayed there over a long weekend I got breakfast for two per night and several drink coupons. The breakfast on the menu was valued at $25 each and the cocktails were 20+ each if I remember right. This was just over a year ago, so possibly outdated. I never stayed at the marquis in ny, but I think the character of the Algonquin beats the marquis.

Who says free breakfast is the "sole determining factor"? It's an added bonus but not the sole determining factor. I would pay an extra $100 for location, convenience, and if there is a free breakfast and/or lounge access why not?

YOU DO.......... because when you look at your posts #4, 6 & 8 above ALL you talk about as important is your "free breakfast".................

Folks, enough. It's up to each person to determine what's important to them, whether it be free breakfast, room upgrades, locations, price, convenience, etc. We're not here to go back/forth on someone's choices.

If someone does stay at the Algonquin now that it's been renovated, an updated 'trip report' on the property & also the exec lounge would be appreciated.

Cheers.

As it so happens, I've just booked a couple of nights there for next month, so if no one reports back before then, I can give an update.
