If you are flying in F, but your friend is in economy, can you bring them up to join you for a meal in the first class cabin because I know Thai advertises their first class seats can accommodate two people for a meal?

No.

Your friend needs to be also flying F for you to invite him to join you.

Many airlines have this 2 seater seat in F and some even in Business Class. None will allow anyone from a cabin below yours to join you for a meal. Actually none will even allow your friend to sit with you.

You may of course go back to your friend's cabin and sit with your friend if there is an empty seat next to your friend.

it happened once to me (sitting in Business Class right behind the curtain) and I only managed because my two friends were the only persons in F-cabin.
They invited me for a drink there, but to join them for a meal would certainly not have been possible.

Of course you can. And if you have no friend in Y, you can walk through the curtains and select a Y passenger to join you.

Wow. He/she just asked a question. You're friendly.

Youngmiler, the first two posts after yours are correct. Gotta be in the same class of service (although I'm sure "favors" happen all the time for friends and familys on certain airlines).

Some years ago my wife needed medical attention (we were in First) and the classic "Is there a Doctor on board" produced a GP from Economy who helped my wife. Even though there were three empty seats in First all the purser offered was for them to have a glass of champagne with us, and to take the bottle back with them to their seat at the back.
We were a bit peeved but were told that the rules would not allow for them to have a meal, never mind stay in the seat afterwards, in First.

I can't believe you would even need to ask this question.

I have never flown internally first class before dazz81 that is why I asked the question.

As with almost everything else , there is no definite NO to anything with Thai . The one who decides is the flight manager ( purser ) and if you ask nicely and the guy is in good mood he might agree . Though chances are low .

I travelled BKK - LHR two years ago with a friend in J. They allowed him to join me for dinner in F, in a full cabin.

Like everything with TG, luck of the draw.

I saw some guy bring a teenager (his son I assume) into F to eat with him on CDG-BKK in March. I don't know if the boy was seated in Y or J, but he definitely wasn't in F.

So you have flown domestic first class and they allow you to do that ? Which airline may I ask ?

If I see that happen on my flight, you bet I am going to report it.

No airline should permit this in F (or J for that matter) IMHO.

F pax have paid for F services (e.g. lounge/seating/catering/amenities) and Y pax have paid for their amenities. Simple.

It is reasonable (though not a given) to expect to be granted a brief visit from pax in other cabins, and maybe to be served a drink, but that's it.

The biggest issue (that seems to get overlooked by people asking such questions) is that additional bodies in the cabin will almost certainly denegrate/dilute/disrupt other passengers rest/enjoyment/service. Service that they have paid for (be it with miles or/and cash).

Too many folk in today's world have a sense of entitlement I am afraid. I see it everywhere, to a lesser or greater degree :(

By way of example: I travelled on EY J a couple of weeks back & noticed an older lady take her seat in F. Several times during the flight (2-3 maybe) I noticed a young woman pass through to the F cabin (she was seated in J) for a few minutes at a time. Clearly agreed with cabin crew & done unobtrusively. I have no idea if any F service was provided to her whilst visiting. Also, less obtrusive to the other F pax in this case due to Suites with closing doors & "buddy" seats. I can see TGs seating in F being more obtrusive (apart from Suites a/c)

I flew with my wife fron BKK to CDG a year back, I was in F, my wife in J. We took both meals together in F, almost full cabin. We got full service but one main meal was from J menu, breakfast was full F service for both of us.I think the fact that I gave my wife my boarding pass helped as the attendants were most impressed by this!

Op as said already, you CANNOT upgrade somebody from a lower fare class.

With regards to upgrading somebody from a lower fare class, 9/10 it would not happen. There may be some crew who 'allow' it to happen if cabin conditions allow. AG was flying a few years back on CA in C from PEK-BKK and AG2 was in Y, as I was upgraded at the gate due to status (Y was oversold):) After the meal service I asked the purser if AG2 could join me for the remaining 2 hours flight it was fine. Mind, C was hardly full.

I think there are factors that may influence such 'inflight upgrades'... Status and demeanor helped me that day as well as a totally full Y and near empty C.

Of course we felt lucky that day; certainly not a frequent occurrence!

Cheers,

I have removed some posts and redacted others which appeared to be little more than an argument about whether one poster should have posted a sarcastic comment. There is, indeed, a "sarcastic" smiley provided by FT, so sarcastic posts are not automatically forbidden per se. We rely, however, on everyone's manners not to be acrimonious, insulting or similar in your posts. If you believe that a post is inappropriate, please bring it to the attention of the Moderators by using the Report Bad Post triangle at the lower left of each post. Additionally, I will be happy to respond to PMs if you prefer that method of communication. I remind you all that posting a comment about Moderation is expressly prohibited by FT rules. All such comments will be removed. Thanks, all!!

What annoys me is because all the work tickets are business class, they upgrade us to first which is appreciated, but if any of us buys economy thinking I can outsmart them and get upgraded to business anyway, they don't.

Great for you (and I am happy for you), but not great for the fellow passengers who actually paid a F ticket be it with cash or miles. I hope they at least asked the people sitting around you who then faced your wife or you while sitting on the ottoman.

If what you state is true it would mean that TG does not protect its premium product and makes a joke of its passengers. Only in this case, a big :td: once more for TG with its inconsistencies and flexible rules and policies.

Geez, tough crowd!!

If you're lucky enough to have the whole F cabin to yourself (a bit more difficult), I would say that the chances of this happening would be slightly higher - no?

Probably... But I think the general consensus is that pax pay a premium price/use loads of points to enjoy the F cabin... Frankly, if you have had outlaid such amounts of $$ or points, you really should not be in the cabin compromising the F experience this who have paid for it... Quite simple, really.

The same rules should apply from Y to C, as well...

Reminds me of a post sometime back where some parents wanted to bring their kids up to F from C so they could 'experience' the cabin... Who on earth would want visitors when you are sleeping/relaxing/guzzling Dom etc.? Not me!

Cheers,
