Asia - Borobudur, Angkor, and Yangon. Flight itineries?

FWIW I am arriving in Singapore, so all flights have to begin and end at Changi.

I was thinking SIN-REP on Silkair, and then REP-BKK-RGN with Bangkok Airways. However, once in Yangon, I cannot book a ticket online out of the country until I am in the country! :td: I was going to book Silkair RGN-SIN-SOC and then a taxi to Yogyakarta from Solo - but I guess I have to hope my hotel can arrange this for me in Myanmar and then have the places readily available on the flights I want!

Can anyone think of a better way of visiting each of these destinations?

Why can't you book the flight out of RGN?

I was easily able to book my flights in and out of RGN last year on TG.

There's got to be a travel agent who can do it for you.

I tried booking on Thai, RGN-BKK-SIN, but I got a warning message saying that I could not book from RGN online, and would need to visit the ticket office in the country.

Yes you can not book online with Thai ex RGN so would need to use a travel agent (although with the changes happening I would expect this to change soon). But as far as I am aware you can book Bangkok Airways, Silk Air and Air Asia online

MAI also fly direct from RGN-REP

I would use MAI, GA and Silk Air. There is a direct flight between RGN and REP. This is the grouping of towns that I do and I can't get enough of, I imagine you have set aside time to do Bagan and see if your hotel can get hold of a good guide in Yog, spend time checking out the shrines outside of Bor, so many of the tours do not pay these any attention at all.

What about flying into Yogyakarta instead of Solo?

Which is closer to Borobudur?

Yogyakarta's probably 40 miles or so closer (which in terms of Indonesian roads may potentially be longer than you may think).

The "problem" with Yogyakarta is that your only nonstop option from Singapore is AirAsia, so if you're expecting business class comforts then it's not the right choice for you! Having said that, the one and only time I've flown AirAsia* I thought it was fine for a short trip but I certainly wouldn't want to fly them for anything more than a couple of hours.

(*I was in Jakarta for business and was joining some friends for a weekend in Bali, and was specifically told by Indonesian contacts that the safer airlines to fly domestically were Garuda and AirAsia, and the latter ended up cheaper)

Haven't you left out Bagan ? :D

A few years ago I used a star alliance award
to go business class Chiang Mai-Yangon-Singapore,
changing in BKK of course on TG. Good value.

I also took train (First Class) Bangkok-Chiang Mai
and Surabaya-Yogyakarta-Jakarta.
Those were fun and quite scenic.

I could add on Bagan and Ngapali Beach, with an intinery of:

Yangon to Mandalay on Air Mandalay
Mandalay to Bagan on a Irrewaddy River cruise
Bagan to Thandwe on Air Mandalay (does this route still exist?)
Thandwe to Yangon on Air Mandalay (ditto, does it still exist?)

I don't fancy flying on any other local airline, other than Air Mandalay, and even that doesn't exactly make me feel at ease.
