An FTer in a dining forum thread mentioned that there is some quality cheese to be had at www.greatamericancheese.com on the first Saturday of every month.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
just to clarify, the tastings are at their warehouse:

At our warehouse
4727 S. Talman
Chicago, IL 60632
(between Western and California Avenues)

I missed last months so am planning on going the first Saturday in July.

Here is a description of the company:
It is our mission to bring together excellent quality, delicious tasting, small production cheeses from around the USA. Through this single source it is our aim to make them more available to chefs in restaurants and food service and to the public via retail stores and farmers' markets.

Representing more than 65 family and co-op producers, The Great American Cheese Collection is the single largest source for America's specialty cheeses.

Anyone else interested in going?

Being new to Chicago I feel like I have attended a festival every day so far. To learn that there is a CHEESE fest - count me IN! Thanks!well welcome to Chicago! FYI, this doesn't seem to be a cheese fest but more of a distributor showing of cheeses open to the public, at least this is what I gather from the website. Another Chicago FTer spoke highly of this event in another thread on Dining Buzz so I'm very interested in giving it a shot, glad you are as well.
I'm in too. (assuming my travel schedule doesn't change)oh no, once you've committed.... ;)

glad you can make it.

What time are you shooting for?

Might be able to make it with my +1 (son, a cheese fanatic).

As the OP of the other thread, we will likely be there.

I'm a bit concerned about overwhelming them since the place is not huge, but the more the merrier. If we're lucky, the Bridgeport Pasty lady or the British Meat Pie guy will be out front.

There are always a few extra vendors there as well, almost always a knife sharpening guy, last month someone was selling ribs (to cook later) etc. Sometimes there's wine to taste.

Nice to see so many there. Good time!agreed, good to meet some new faces !! Thanks again milepig for suggesting this venue in the cheese thread.

Some personal faves:
12 yr old Cheddar
2 yr old goat gouda
young sheep's milk gorganzola

Got a couple of the British meat pies (a chicken curry & a mushroom/kale).
I can't recall the name of his restaurant though.

We also hit up the Tom Tom Tamales factory, 25 for $13 www.tomtomtamales.com

typed the wrong address on the GPS, and found myself in N 4727 Talman. I bought the 12 year old cheddar, the couda, pulled pork, and 2 meat pies.

Fun visit today. Love that 12-year-old cheddar, amazing. My son munched down the steak pie.

We should go to more of these outlet type sales. One of my favorites years ago was an open house at Eli's Cheesecake. They sold off slightly damaged cheesecakes for $2. Oh, man, was my wife hacked when I brought home about 20 of them.

The cowda was a big hit all around. Other friends appeared later and they sung the praises of a Morel and Leek that I don't remember seeing earlier.
