Other European Frequent Flyer Programs - Connecting to Icelandair with another airline in Denver?

Long story short: A few months ago I was booked from Denver to Reykjavik on Icelandair's new route, and lived near Denver, so connecting wasn't a problem - it was a simple one way flight.

Due to work, I had to to relocate to Los Angeles, but I am still planning on taking my trip from Denver to Reykjavik. What's the best way to fly from Los Angeles to Denver and make sure that my luggage gets checked through to KEF? Is it even possible? I know that (i think, rather) that Frontier and Alaska codeshare with FI, and both of them fly out of LAX - but is it possible to get them to check my stuff all the way through?

Or would my best bet be to fly to Denver a day early to ensure that all of my stuff is going to make it? It's pretty hard to lose luggage on a one-way from LAX with no stops, but stranger things have happened, and I'm a photographer who has an assignment in Iceland and losing my bags with no recourse would be devastating.

Thanks for any help/ideas!

Even if it was a FI flight connecting to your FI flight in DEN (hypothetically), there's no guarantee your bags will make the connection, just a higher amont of likelihood. Carry what you absolutely need, and hope the rest makes its way.

I flew FI to KEF a few months ago with a connection in Seattle on Alaska. The flights were purchased on separate tickets, but the counter agent was able to interline the bags and they made it to KEF with no problems. And I didn't have to pay a checked baggage fee, despite the fact the tickets were purchased separately.

If you want to play it safe, get to Denver a day early. But problems still happen, no matter how conservative you play things.

Frontier has nonstop service from LAX to DEN, but I'd go with the lowest fare. I don't think being a code-share matters, as long as the airline has a interline baggage agreement with FI, and most do.

I have done this many, many times in the days before FI flew from SEA. I'd buy a RT on NW (SEA-MSP) to connect to my FI flight from MSP. So like you, it was 2 separate tickets. Every time.

I always brought my ticket documentation with me, but it was no problem for NW to check the bags thru to KEF, or for FI to check them all the way back to SEA on the return. Never had a problem in over 40 trips, perhaps I was lucky, but the bags always showed up.

Have fun. Iceland is great, and tourist are flocking there this summer.

FWIW, look at the arrivals display for KEF:

That is a lot of people traveling to Iceland.
