I'm away in BCN right now and I flew on an Aeroplan award using UA and LX.
The airlines lost my checked bag and Amex claims that because my ticket was "paid" for in points, their coverage doesn't apply to my lost bag. I did pay the taxes and fees on my ticket with my Amex

Is this normal for Amex to decline a claim like this?
Do I just need to wait for LX to do their thing with finding my bag?

I believe that is correct and is one of the downsides of using miles.

I guess you could argue. That's another difference with the CIBC VISA Aerogold Infinite... this card covers you on Aeroplan rewards tickets and it is black on white in the fine print. Their definition of the "full price" is therefore the taxes and YQ surcharge of an AP reward. AMEX remain silent and doesn't say a thing about that.

... And I have one too.

My rule of "Use Aerogold everywhere Amex isn't taken" seems to have failed me this time.

Sorry to hear that.

This is what they told me too when I called AMEX prior using points for tickets as I was wondering if I can save $ on additional travel insurance. The agent also mentioned something about eligibility of insurance if you charge 50% or more on AMEX. I didn't take note on that conversation since it doesn't apply on my case (and I think it's silly to have this kind of "50% or more" rule).
