Yea, I've never been a club member...have 2 trips coming up in a few weeks, and tempting to join now (I'll have more travel this year also, just not booked yet).
I've been in the clubs before/after int'l trips (and used passes), so I know what they're all about. $275 is about my limit (I spend tons of $$$ on biking lately).

Between the annual pass I get with the US MC and access as a Star Gold when going international, the $275 offer for me as a CP is tempting but I'll be unlikely to pull the trigger.

i bought last year when it was super cheap but didn't renew.
it is a great deal if you travel enough. lots of club options and discounts on some other independent clubs. the amenities in the couple US clubs i was in were better and i imagine the United clubs will be really full with the recent credit card fee waive.

Perhaps I'm wrong but I was under the impression even with a US membership you still needed to be a Star Gold to access UA lounge, just like any Star A member lounge

Nope, the club membership alone gives you access to United Clubs and Star Alliance lounges. To access a Star Alliance lounge, you do need to be flying on a *A flight, but for United you don't even need that. Since the UA/CO merger, I've occasionally used my US Club membership to use the former CO President's Club lounge in ATL when waiting for a DL flight.

Nope... a US club membership by itself gets you into:
Any paid lounge (US Club, United Club, Air Canada MLL), regardless of who you're flying with - fellow FT'ers have successfully used a United lounge prior to flights on Southwest and Spirit.
Nearly all other Star Alliance business class lounges, provided you're flying on a *A flight that day. The exceptions are LH Senator Lounges (these require *G) and many SQ lounges outside of Singapore (which require you be on an SQ flight that day.)
Star Alliance consolidated lounges in LA, London and a few other cities.
In fact, if you just had *G and no club card, you could only access the United Club on an international itinerary.

All true, but these are serious PQMs if, like me, one is a borderline CP and might have to burn the money as a Buy-up anyhow.
Also, at 60K PQMs, under the Special Dividends, you can "[a]dd your spouse or domestic partner [geez, you have to choose?] to your USAirways Club Membership." Which is kinda nice ....
So I think I'm back in.

It's a good deal for the EQMs, especially for anyone who is going to be mileage running at the end of the year. While upwards of 10 cents per EQM is nowhere near ideal, you do get the club membership, which has value, and you don't need to fly anywhere.
As *G with an Amex plat that I got for the bonus and still have several months left on, paying for the US Club doesn't make sense, even for the EQM. I wish, though, they would offer this closer to the end of the year, when I'll have a much better sense how close I am to requalifying for Gold.

So does that mean flying out on a *A flight that day, or can you use them inbound, too, i.e., on arrival? I remember being told at Star Alliance at CDG on arrival that my *G status did not entitle me to get in (not that they did not relent "just this one time"); but I have wondered since whether my US club card should have entitled me to un-sweet-talked entry (if I even had one at the time).

You're correct, *A lounges require that you be departing on a *A flight that day. US/UA/AC lounges can be used on arrival with a club card.

As an Amex Plat who is also US Gold, I wonder about this too. The United Club is a good deal, especially considering the better amenities at those clubs. They have showers, right?

I didn't get an email but my club membership doesn't run out until Oct. Last year I was playing the waiting game and ended paying full (CP discounted) price and only 500 PQMs.
IIRC renewing early adds 12 months on to an existing membership so this may be a good deal for me if it's open to everyone.

The PQMs are pretty tempting - like you, I'll probably not requalify for CP this year by flying and will need to look at whether buying back up is an option.
I'm in the same boat - Amex Plat, so all I'd really be getting is access to the UA clubs - which in my recent experience, are overcrowded and quite noisy - certainly not a "business atmosphere".
The other thing to consider as an Amex Plat is that buying club membership is eligible for the $200 airline fee credit - in which case, this is 3500 PQM's + UA club access for $75. Not too bad. (As long as you haven't squandered it all on pringles and Finlandia vodka during the odd missed upgrade :D )

I just pulled the trigger. Miles posted while on the phone. She told me you can only access UA lounges with the physical card, no print outs or receipts. She said that United had to take a harder stance because of "manipulation" by some passengers. I'm flying out of MCO on monday with only a UA lounge in sight...damn those manipulators...Anybody have any luck getting into a UA lounge without a card lately?

Gator applied on the phone. I wouldn't be surprised if the webform only captures the info without processing it, then someone has to go and type it all into another system. I did mine online and didn't even see the credit card hold yet. Will call tomorrow if there's no sign of activity.

IIRC renewing early adds 12 months on to an existing membership so this may be a good deal for me if it's open to everyone. My membership renews at an odd time as well and I have missed out on tons of these promos. You are not allowed to renew unless you are within 90 days of expiry.
Last year I did luck out and the CP rep sort of messed up and did the renewal for me outside of the 90 day window. Then they called and said they couldn't honor it, but with a little begging on my part, and the fact that the credit card had already posted, they let it stand for a GS hit.
I love my club membership and use it often - even if it is just for running in for a cup of coffee. I may just let it lapse this next year and wait until an offer like this to renew comes around!

Online club applications are not processed automatically. The form just captures your information and then somebody in Winston-Salem has to run your credit card. It usually takes 2-3 days.

Awesome deal. Per the announcement at The Gate (link: http://www.flyertalk.com/the-gate/blog/10734-save-100-and-get-3500-preferred-qualification-miles-for-club-membership.html), the price is a flat $275 for all DM membership levels regardless of status. For someone with no status that's a savings of $225 off the $450 individual price plus $50 initiation fee.
Copy of the article is below:
From now through June 15, 2012, enroll or renew a US Airways Club membership and you will instantly save $100,00 while earning 3,500 elite qualification miles towards Preferred elite status — and the $50.00 new member initiation fee will be waived, plus you will enjoy free access to over 1,200 business centers globally with a complimentary 12-month Regus Businessworld Gold membership, purportedly a $600.00 value.
Unfortunately, you cannot renew your US Airways Club membership before your current membership is greater than 90 days from its expiration date.
US Airways Club membership usually costs $375.00 for one year except for Chairman’s Preferred elite and general Dividend Miles members, whose one-year memberships cost $325.00 and $450.00 respectively. However, the promotion this month cost $275.00 for a one-year membership for everyone, regardless of Dividend Miles elite status — and you get access to the airport lounges of United Airlines and Air Canada, as well as nearly all other airport lounges of Star Alliance airline partners.
This offer keeps changing: there was an offer back in March where you could earn 2,500 Preferred elite qualification miles and two free months for US Airways Club membership, and another offer in February where you were able to get US Airways Club membership and 5,000 Preferred elite qualification miles for $375.00. For discounted US Airways Club membership, the current offer seems to be the best — although you earn 1,500 fewer Preferred elite qualification miles than the offer in February, and you do not get your membership extended beyond a year.
If this offer is not appealing to you and you are interested in joining the US Airways Club as a member, it may be a safe bet to wait a month or two until another version of this promotion is offered…

Yep, patience is a virture and US will indeed process it in a few day whether you phone in or go the easy way with the web form. You'll get a confirmation message in a day or so with a letter you can print to use as verification in US or United clubs ( good question to ask is if the US Clubs would already have the verification in their system should you visit prior to this ).
This promo is good on all sorts of levels and it works both for US and for we FFers. If you fly out of the hub cities, Club membership is most certainly something to avail yourself of ( I recall a thread here about a late-arriving FFer who gets entangled with TSA and misses a flight & another FT member notes how the cost of a membership encourages you to arrive sooner rather than later as the Club is an inherently better place to wait than the gate ). If you're a buy-up strategizer, you gain 3500 QMs for between $200 to $300 . . . that's a pretty good MR sans flying which either helps you hit your miles target or puts you into a lower-priced buy-up tier. Also good is the new synergy with United clubs when flying to places where no US Club exists. The *A option is also useful.
So US deploys as useful "test balloon" which works for everyone.
I myself have been an occassional Club member who would respond to the promo renewal deals ( which were not offered until you were 6 months or more beyond your renewal date ). This new promo eliminates that proviso and simply opens the door if you hand over some money. Common sense on US's part. I'm more than happy to partner up at these prices.

I'm sitting in the UA lounge in MCO right now using my new US membership. They let me in no problem presenting nothing but the payment receipt that US emailed me. Decent setup too with cereal, yogurt, and an espresso machine...Not sure if it was a fluke or if UA has relaxed policy but the "lounge dragon" (credit thomwithanh) just typed in my info from the printout...

Yeah, I've gone into UA clubs with just the receipt. They need the membership number and expiration date.
US clubs will have it keyed to your DM number, so you don't need anything other than that and an ID.
Don't expect any other *A clubs to accept anything but the plastic card, though.
