Hi,

Hoping for some pointers. I am hoping to do a german extravaganza for 12 nights to rack up enough nights to maintain diamond status (i need 12).

All the german hyatts seem similar price and travel between them is comparative on:
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

My question:
Which are the best hyatts in germany based on:
1. Room and hotel quality
2. Treatment of diamonds (club access and room upgrade)
3. things to do in the destination.

Looking at the forum i was thinking:
PH Hamburg, i have stayed here before- beautiful hotel but i was not diamond so got the worst room. Hamburg was a lovely town but didnt find an awful lot of activities other than shopping (which was fun) and the hotel pool which is an advantage with my little boy.

Finally i have some stay certificates which i might/might not use for some of these nights but i believe at most of these hotels using these does not merritt a stay towards the diamond membership? if you have any experience otherwise it would be good to know! thanks in advance!

Mainz is a nice property with a good restaurant, but no club lounge. Nice small city with things to see and do (don't miss the Chagall windows in the church http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Stephen%27s_Church,_Mainz), and location is right on the river in a nice area.
If you get to Poland, the property in Warsaw is great.
Stay certificates do not earn points or stay credit.

There is a club lounge at the Mainz property.

Def. go to Berlin.
Very nice club lounge, pool on the roof with outside seating and relaxing area. Its right in the middle of berlin with everything in walking distance. Perfect to explore Berlin. Big Shopping mall across the street and the sony center on the other side. Also perfect for using a Diamond suite upgrade.
been there 20 times, never disappointed.

Well, you can stick around the Mainz, Cologne, Dusseldorf area if you don't want to travel long distances. However, GH Berlin and PH Hamburg are the best properties in Germany.

Stayed at the HR in Cologne at least a dozen times and I absolutely love the view, especially from the lounge. Also, the rooms have been recently refurbished so I would recommend spending at least 3 nights there to relax and walk around the town.

Berlin and Hamburg are for sure the two best properties - that's why there are the only Park and Grand Hyatt in Germany.

Berlin was my long-time favorite but has been very disappointing in their treatment of loyal guests in the last 12 months. Service standards have slipped dramatically and that's very sad. I like the Grand Suite and the in-house restaurant VOX - never disappoints, excellent management!

Hamburg on the other hand wasn't my favorite for a long time as I did not find standards to be on par from what I would expect from a Park Hyatt. That has changed in the past two years and the PHH is offering now service excellence a la Hyatt. Apples is a great restaurant and has undergone renovation recently. One of the best breakfasts - don't miss it.

Diamond Treatment: Both have lounges but Hamburg is more generous in upgrading Diamonds and the breakfast at Apples is included while Berlin can be very difficult when it comes to upgrades and breakfast at VOX has be paid in full.

Try them both and post your opinion here - looking forward reading your conclusion.

Just what SMK77 said.
Both Restaurants very good, though i like the big variety and style of Steaks in Hamburg very much, the VOX in B has perfect Sushi.

You cant go wrong with both of them!

Nice property since the renovation but IMHO not the most optimal locations for tourist things in Köln due to its location across the river from the main tourist/shopping areas.

4-5 years ago you were right.

Since then, the Regency Cologne has been renovated and the suites overlooking the river and cathedral are tough to beat, same with the RC and the view from there.

Since years, the service at the RC Mainz was leading all properties in Germany and in this case, we are talking about world-class competition. Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne.

After Dusseldorf opened, however, it is even tougher at the top, this goes for both the views from the RC as well as the service at the club.

For some suites, Berlin is still a strong contender for the peak position, but the regular rooms in both Hamburg and Berlin cannot compete with their newer counterparts on the river Rhine.

I would also agree, that Berlin and especially Hamburg have the best rooms (and unfortunately also that service in Berlin deteriorated a little), but I haven't seen the rooms in Cologne since the renovation and I have also not seen the newest addition, Dusseldorf, which only opened recently.
Mainz is used a lot by airline-crews from nearby Frankfurt airport.

As for the locations: The Hotels in Hamburg and Berlin are right in the city center, but both some walking distance from the main touristic points (in Berlin Hilton and Westin are even closer, in Hamburg Sofitel or Raffles/Fairmont). Dusseldorf is in the in/scene harbor area and you'll need a cab for the city center. Cologne is admittedly on the less interesting side of the rhine, but for that reason gives you a great view on the cathedral (a bit like looking at Central from Kowloon side in Hong Kong), but you can cross by foot via the railway bridge right from the Hotel to the city center in under 10 minutes).

Berlin definitely is the most interesting City in Germany to visit at the moment, Hamburg the nicest/most beautiful and Mainz a chance to see a slightly more rural/ancient Germany (less big and new buildings) and a beautiful landscape with lots of winerys nearby.
Cologne and Dusseldorf, the ever quarelling neighbours are not only by location probably the most western cities in Germany. Dusseldorf is a bit more chique and stylish, Cologne more relaxed and heartier.

Although I am not a friend of rail travel, you can connect exactly the Hyatt-cities in Germany very good for a railroad roundtrip.

Hope you have a nice stay!

There is a club lounge at the Mainz property.
My mistake. Stayed at a lot of properties on the trip that included Mainz, so i must have mixed them up. Thanks for the correction.

Four of us will be taking it on a Friday morning in July. Would you advise making reservations for assigned seats?.... should it be in 1st?
Also is the Warsaw Hyatt a short ride from the train station?
Thanks

I agree about the GH Berlin being a nice property. I also really enjoyed Cologne, both the city and the Hyatt Regency. If you're doing a mattress run, you could certainly circulate among Cologne, Mainz, Frankfurt, and Dusseldorf via short train rides and do very well.
