Giant Supermarkets (DC, MD, VA) is running a fantastic promo now through Thursday, June 14. The net net is basically 20% off on just about anything not purchased at Giant. With the purchase of $50 worth of gift cards (issued by any merchant besides Giant) you receive a $10 coupon to be used on your next shopping order (within seven days).
If you purchase a $50 gift card (for say Amazon, Home Depot, numerous restaurant and retail outlets, Shell gasoline) you can then take your $10 coupon and use it immediately for the purchase of another $50 gift card at a cost of $40. And you receive another $10 coupon, and so on.
Based on upcoming spending I've loaded up on Home Depot, Shell gasoline and some Christmas gifts.
Requires a separate transaction for each $50 purchase (I warn the people in line behind me that it will take a while). Used my Chase Freedom with 5% cash back (or Ulitmate Rewards points after conversion) for the first $1,500 and my Amex Hilton for double points after that.
You may want to let your credit card issuer know so that when they see fifteen or twenty or more transactions for $40 at the same place in a very short time it doesn’t trigger a fraud alert.
Happy shopping!!

Will be up to the store if they let you use the coupon on another GC. These coupons always exclude the purchase of "prohibited" items. These prohibited items always include, alcohol, cigarettes, gas, and gift cards. (among other things -- sometimes dairy products are included depending on state/city)

I haven't had any problem so far in my 50+ transactions so far and this coupon doesn't explicitly exclude gift cards. It was actually at the suggestion of one of the cashiers that I first tried using the coupon on the next transaction (although I definitely should have thought of it myself).

Is there a physical paper coupon that you need to use, or is it just a promo in the system?

In NH we have Super Stop and Shop and it prints out of the Catalina machine. I have done about 100 of these in 3 days so far...making a nice profit.

No coupon necessary for the first transaction - it's all automated. If necessary, grab the weekly circular at the entrance (or print it out in advance) which clearly shows the promo in the middle of the first page.

This practice is not common in my location. Safeway is running similar promotion as mentioned in OP. One of the items on exclusion list is gift cards.
So lucky you! But I will be in NH next week for a day. Unfortunately, this promotion expires before my arrival in NH. I definitely would check this out.

NOT true. There is always an attendant watching over the self-service checkout kiosks and he/she will come over to activate the card at the kiosks. You don't have to go through a traditional checkout lane.

Ok, that's not what they told me, but as always YMMV. Curious though, if doing 10 separate transactions, whether each card must be activated separately.

I went to S&S and they had big signs on the gift cards saying We are sorry, there was a mistake in this weeks circular, for the $10 back there's a limit of one per transaction, per household.
I took a bunch of Gc's to a self serve kiosk and they wouldn't take. Pretty soon an employee came over and said you had to take GC's to a cashier. I whittled it down to two, figuring the best I could do would be to buy one for $50, get the $10 coupon, and buy another for $40, so I'd have $100 in GC's for $90. But then I got out of line and gave up, it wasn't worth it to me without rinsing and repeating. I could have gone to a couple other S&S's but I didn't bother. Is this deal still kicking anywhere as of today?

I went to stop and shop today to buy 3 prepaid visa cards...the woman said she "felt bad" letting me by 3 because it was now "supposed to be one per household" but that she would still let me do it. Weird, because I have easily done over 100 of these in the past few days, usually 10 at a time. They must have caught on. The catalina coupon says "compliments of itunes" so I don't even think they are the ones losing money.

I had no problem this morning at two different Giant stores. At the first the cashier helpfully asked the manager to open another lane to handle my transaction (12 cards) so the line didn't back up. At the next I simply asked a management type to take me at the customer service area after confirming they had a coupon machine (the Catalina per previous poster). She handled my ten transactions with no problem. Unfortunately I'm now out of the game as I was on my way to the airport after these two transactions and won't be back before the promo expires.
Good luck to others.

I had no problem about an hour ago processing 10 Lowe's and 4 Shell at the Giant on Little River Turnpike in Annandale, VA. I can confirm that 2-$25 dollar cards work just as well as 1-$50 card (it's $50 worth of cards, not just a $50 card -- if that was unclear to anyone). Only issue is store was out of amazon.com cards.
Coke 12-packs are 3/$10, a good way to use up that orphan coupon at the end. Wish this deal didn't end tomorrow. Would love to see this again in a different credit card statement.
Many thanks to "gatorboy" for discovering this.

Had some trouble with a Home Depot card at Giant not printing out coupon. Manager had to re-do it and it worked. I don't see where the exclusion is for Giant gift cards.
Tomorrow (14th) I'll go back for several more.
Update- Again had a problem with no coupon printing for a Home Depot card but coupon printed fine for McDonald's card.
Has anyone had any luck with Giant gift cards?

Scored a dozen Amazon & Shell gas gift cards!
Was a little wary it wouldn't work since my nearest Giant's policy claims to only sell gift cards for either cash or debit. Still, I lucked out and managed to use a CC without problem with the cash register attendant.
It's a little time-consuming though since you have to ring the cards one at a time in order to get the $10 coupon to use for the subsequent GC purchase.
Tempted to go another round, though a bit worried they might enforce their cash/debit card policy.
Thanks OP ^

I went to my local Giant in MD (DC suburbs) and didn't have any problem going to a register and making four transactions of $50 gift cards. There was no sign limiting the gift cards to one per household as some have reported but the coupon did say "one per household per day". The cashier didn't seem to care, but just in case you get a cashier who does stick to the rules, it does seem to be correct to only allow one transaction.

Wanted to share my experience and some pointers (they helped me I think).
Had a good friend who PM'd me about the offer day before. I do not have any Giant locations where I live, but luckily was on my way to DC to stay for a night. I was able to get to 2 giant location, one late PM (after 10) first day and the other at around 2 PM next day. Got a total of 80 GCs!! No questions asked, and the cashiers were more than happy to help. Also, the GCs have not expiry on them (I even called Shell customer service to confirm - and yes, no expiry..works great for my coz just had an apporama and had about 10K of spending to do in next 3-4 months).
My suggestions..
1. Try to go at odd hours (esp late at night, somewhere around 10). Try to find a location thats not too busy. Remember however that the coupon prints out only at a cashier desk and you cannot self checkout, so don't go took late.
2. I signed up for a Giant shoppers card before I made the purchase and had her scan the card before each purchase...not sure if the machine spews out a coupon without the Giant shoppers card
3. Try going to the customer service desk with about 30 cards in hand and tell them you want to make individual purchases. Be nice!! Both times, they actually closed a lane for me and let me purchase the cards!
4. Share the wealth...I actually let the cashier keep the last $10 coupon that printed from the final transaction...she was on cloud nine...

Gatorboy, great find!

Thanks gatorboy for pointing this out, it's very easy to miss the promotion printed on the first page of the circular :)
I went to a giants last night, and with about 6 $50 GC's went straight to the customer service desk. The guy there said that since he did not have the little machine that prints out the coupons, he would ring all the GC's individually and give me the $60 back in cash - even better ! This might work for others, might not, because after i was done another lady at the counter told him not to do that again for other customers.

The fact that it is Giant in PA could be the difference. While Giant-Carlisle shares the same ownership as Giant-Landover (i.e., MD, DC, VA, DE) and Stop & Shop, it is a separate and distinct unit and may have different policies and system programming.

This seems to be tied to the Gift card provider, and not the retailer.
Stop & Shop in Western Mass is returning $10 coupons good on $10 off a purchase of more than $10. (tested twice with an Amazon GC purchase) In this case the coupon is "courtesy of iTunes" and with a short expiration date: 1 week.
Stop & Shop excludes their own cards from this program and the limit is one per household per transaction; The $10 isn't supposed to be used to purchase another GC, but I can't tell if they are enforcing it, as these were mixed purchases including grocery items >$10.

At the Stop&Shop in Hudson, NH they have plastered the display with signs that there's a limit of 1 and that the $10 coupon cannot be used for another gift card purchase. (That part is not true. At two different Giants, the coupon machine just would not print the $10 coupons. At the first one, I just gave up given how busy and clearly short-staffed they were. Just didn't want to be THE one who was holding up every one.
At the last one, circular in hand, I had to point out to two different cashiers the terms of the promo and even argue with one of them over what a "single qualifying transaction" actually meant!

Mixed results last night. Had no problem purchasing Sears or Marshalls gift cards at two different Giants in VA. Tried Shell gas cards at both locations and neither of them generated the coupon. Manager at the second one said those cards weren't eligible to get the coupon, but she used an old coupon to give me the discount anyway. She also said someone had tried Home Depot earlier and that also apparently did not generate a coupon. So, caveat emptor/YMMV on those two.
Still a great deal -- Sears cards will save us almost $200 off a new fridge!

Hmm, wonder if they've changed the programming somehow. I had no problem with a number of Shell and way more Home Depot than I care to admit (basement remodel coming soon:D). All purchased at various times/places in DC and MD over the last 11 days though not since Saturday. At this point most cashiers I have encountered have at least a little experience with the promo.
Be sure to watch and keep the activation receipts though. In putting together a tracking spreadsheet I discovered that I have two different transactions (each receipt has a unique transaction code) with the same last four dgits for an Amazon gift card. I haven't headed back to the store to deal with it yet as, ironically, the one card that is apparently not activated, is the one card we gave away as a gift. We're getting back in touch with the recipient to confirm the card number and exchange cards with them if we confirm it's not activated.

The promotion just kicked off in Eastern PA yesterday. I purchased a $50 SW GC in one transaction this morning and coupon printed fine. I tried to apply it immediately to another SW GC and the cashier could not get it to work.
She didn't know why until she read the coupon which states "...Coupon not redeemable on gift card purchases"
I thought I would just pick up a number of GCs and use the $10 coupons for some groceries, but the coupon also states "Limit one coupon per transaction per day."

The Visa® Gift Card is issued by Meta Bank pursuant to a license from Visa U.S.A. Inc.
Why is everyone buying other gift cards? Wouldn't the Visa card give you the best deal considering it's $50... rather than be limited to Shell or somewhere else? Does the visa card have fees?

At the Stop&Shop in Hudson, NH they have plastered the display with signs that there's a limit of 1 and that the $10 coupon cannot be used for another gift card purchase. (That part is not true. If they scan it, it will work.) It also says that gasoline cards are excluded. That part is true. If you buy a gasoline card, no $10 coupon comes out.
How about the other Stop & Shop in Milford NH?

Yes, there are fees for any type of visa/amex card (anywhere between $3-5 per card for activation). Also, I did not have any trouble loading up on Shell gas cards (about 50 I think) and each time I had a new coupon. Seems like they might have reprogrammed the system with so many mass-loaders like myself:)

They also had this sign up at a Giant near Glen Burnie, MD.
Ha! That was my regular grocery store when I lived in Federal Hill, Baltimore almost 20 years ago.
Once time they had a HUGE sale on cat litter (like 80% off) and I bought almost a ton of it, making several trips to get it home.
Surprised the wife.

No problem doing multiple transactions at the Stop & Shop in Somerville MA, despite the sign. $10 coupons were printed for ToysRUs and Bed Bath And Beyond gift cards.

Probably surprised the cat too. It probably thought you were trying to say something about its hygiene.
Did you keep it in the garage or unload it on PlasticCatLitterJungle?

Home Depot still working fine at Giant.
No one has mentioned whether prepaid telephone refill cards generate the coupon.

As I recall, the local Stop & Shop had a sign up stating these were excluded. YMMV. I'm guessing excluded cards are from another gift card company than the one participating in the promotion.

No signs up in my Giant in suburban MD,but Amazon card generated a coupon and Shell did not.
Shell definitely worked in this same store last week.

Thinking about trying this tonight to help max out my Freedom 5% bonus for this quarter. I live in Arlington near the Pentagon - any suggestions on which Giant would be the best bet?
Was thinking about the one on Columbia Pike (north of old town), but someone else in this thread said they had bad luck there (sketchy neighborhood = fraud i guess). Any suggestions on an alternate that you had good luck with?

Continued success at the Stop & Shop in Somerville MA. Coupons printed OK for Amazon, Marshalls, Home Depot, and Groupon. And it's possible to use the last $10 coupon for a $10 Stop & Shop card, so you're not restricted by the 1-week expiration on the coupon.

Well, had three cats, so we had a large volume of litter moving through. Dumped the bags in a huge stack in the basement. Took about 12-15 months to burn through it all as I recall. One of the best "investments" I ever made.

Tried to use my last $10 coupon from last weeks $1000 Marriott GC spectacular and was told that the coupon could not be used to buy another gift card (it does actually say that on the T&C's)...disappointed, but it was a nice run while it lasted.

It is weird...when the promotion first started there wasn't any such language on the coupon. I didn't even realized they had changed it until a cashier had pointed it out to me. (She still took the coupon anyway). I actually felt guilty given the change in language. I will just use the coupons I have left for actual groceries!

Just back from Vons. Bought the Visa GC ($100) and no $10 grocery coupon. Store manager gave me a $10 GC for Vons.
No one at Vons knows whether it is only one Visa GC per household or not for promotion......anyone??
