This type of excellent Southwest sale seems to only come up 1-2 times per year. I haven't confirmed this yet, but it appears on first glance that you can combine this Wanna Get Away fare sale with the 15% off promo offer that is discussed at http://boardingarea.com/blogs/dealswelike/2012/06/11/15-off-southwest-flights/
Keep in mind, however, that the 15% off promo cannot be used when redeeming points....the discount is only applied when purchasing airfare.

Disregard the above 15% off deal....I tried, and it apparently does NOT stack with the fall fare sale. Oh well! Still an excellent deal.

scf, the UA jacked up the fare right after they finished merging their operating systems CO-UA. Till that time, I was finding fares for less than $200 mid-week travel. I think WN also did not help when they raised fares, now that they are taking the lead, and oil is under $90 per barrel, I hope UA matches, I will be all over that and buying like 8-10 round trips!! I find it interesting that none of the hub carriers have matched yet. I recall during the last SWA semi-annual sale the then independent UA was the first to response quickly followed by CO and AA. DL initially had resistance but matched selectively later.
I have some travel I want to throw to AA at the right price but am thinking I'll be taking my first SWA flight this summer.
EDIT:
I was watching MSP-CHI, no matches as of edit, it appears that UA is matching MSP-(CHI)-STL though.

This couldn't come too soon for me. My folks could not understand how I could fly around the whole planet earth for cheaper than I could visit them. Now I can visit them for not too much rapine and pillage, although the cost per mile for me is still well over 10 cents. More like 12 cents. But the previous price quotes I was getting this summer MSY-TYS were simply highway robbery and grand theft airplane!!! Whew. Have just booked, and now my Mom is happy.

I just realized in the course of this WN sale that WN has three hubs (HOU, MDW, DEN) that compete with UA (IAH, ORD, DEN) plus a lot of overlap at SFO/LAX metro areas where UA has focus cities/mini-hubs. I've been a bit on the fence between UA and AA with the status match, but now that I've taken a new job as the IT director for a small private college which will tie me down much more than I was before, I can't spend the time to MR up to ExP for next year. I was a bit disappointed that I didn't at least have that option, but this new discovery that UA will be constantly forced to match WN's sales makes my heart happy. :D

Doing so won't accomplish anything. You'll pay the fare difference (i.e. the non-sale fare) to apply the value of your October reservation towards flying in July.

No....the sale I linked to was advertised on 6/15/12 alongside the $49 sale. My guess: airlines like UA expanded their sale to include connecting flights, and WN reacted by matching UA's sale prices.
In any event, even though it's well before 11:59PM Pacific time, it appears that the WN sale is over.

Anyone actually paying $522 for ORD-SFO-ORD?? That's 14 cpm!
Not this route but I just ok'd 3 summer trips as reasonable at 15ish cpm.
A friend just paid $300 for ABQ-IAH which is 20cpm
and I advised on another route that was SLC-BDL at $520 (4K miles or about 13cpm).
SLC-AUS OJ IAH-SLC for somewhere around 400
*my definition of reasonable is that you 'need' to take the trip and this fare won't get better*
But if you're going for extreme--I rechecked some SLC-IAH tickets I got during this past week for 256 (a stunning 11 cpm on this route) and they're now up to 560 as the 'standard' nonstop pricing (23 cpm if you're keeping score)
