I won't have a car so places like Acadia National Park is out of the question. It'll probably be something that I'll do in the future. My base will be Boston. Are there any places that's worth going for a day or two and at most 3 from Boston? I hope the place is easily accessible by bus or train (preferably by bus though) and that the fares are reasonable.
Any suggestions?
Based on what you wrote, I'd say Portland is your only option. There really isn't any other place that is worth more than a day trip that is easily reachable by bus or train.

Anything in particular you're looking for? Hiking, coastline, citylife, etc?

The train or bus to Portland is best bet. Concord Trailways leaving from South Station is probably the most affordable way or take the train from North Station. Bus and train station are located in same place in Portland and then a short cab ride to the Old Port. Taxis are usually waiting. Stay in Old Port and you wont need a car. You can take the ferry to a couple of islands for adventure and all restaurants/bars/shopping are right there.
Cheers.

How much is it to take the train?

Is Portland worth going to? I don't get the sense that it is base on your initial response. :(

You're not going to have a car so going to Portland means you'll need to take the bus in town from bus station/train station. I'm a public transportation junkie in NYC but in Portland? Well, not so much. I think traveling around Portland is better by car.
Oddly enough, if you wanted to go to Acadia National Park, you could fly into Bar Harbor Airport, and then there is the free LL Bean shuttle that takes you all over Mount Desert Island where Bar Harbor and Acadia are located. There is actually a system of shuttles that make for EXCELLENT public transportation whose routes go all over the island and it's all free thanks to LL Bean. You can rent a bike, put it on the shuttle, and then go anywhere you like. So many hotels/motels are near shuttle stops so a car is really not needed.
If you'd rather take the train from Boston and you want a beach scene, there is Old Orchard Beach. The train station is just a few blocks from the beach. It's not typical Maine coastline whatsoever but the French Canadians seem to flock there.
