According to this article, NH and CI are talking to forge a closer relationship. The question is, with NH in Star and CI in sky, why does NH compelled to talk to CI with BR joining Star in the future?

Really? I think the article says that both airlines are looking to increase their international services -- there's nothing about cooperation. It even notes that the men spoke "in separate interviews." The article is poorly written, though, as it certainly suggests cooperation between NH and CI, especially with the mention of the open skies agreement between Japan and Taiwan.
More importantly, NH is looking to start NRT-DEL in the near future! Perhaps they'll upgrade the BOM route to a 787 at some point.

I was thinking the same thing. What threw me off was the word "forge" in the title. As in, to forge a friendship. But, it could also mean, to forge ahead. Either way, I think the author was being too "fancy" with his wording.
I assume, with NH planning service into India, they will rely on connecting traffic from N. America or other destinations. Is there a market from Japan to India? I plead ignorance.

There is a decent amount from Japan from Japanese trading companies and manufacturers, but unless I'm totally mistaken not enough to support flights just on O&D. I think that NH is trying to increase its share of the West Coast USA - India market since flying via NRT is shorter than flying via the East Coast or Europe.

From what I recall from some recent news articles about Air India, Tokyo was AI's only profitable route. JAL also seems to do well to DEL, starting initially at 3 p/w several years ago, now running at 5 p/w, and upgraded to daily beginning December. NH would have to fight for the market, but should be able to do well with the strong loyalty to Star Alliance and NH.
