As near as I can tell there is "wifi available" but can't tell if free or if fee, and which carrier. Mention of an "internet lounge" which from a photo might be airside, but again missing details. Anyone know? Thanks!

Not free.

The 'internet lounge' is a collection of coin-operated PCs. It's airside, near Cafe Ritazza. I believe it pumps out an expensive wifi signal with a tiresome and long-winded registration process.

There's also BT Openzone, I think.

If you have lounge access, there's wifi in the BA lounge.

Well I never. Just noticed this press release on the NCL website:

http://www.newcastleairport.com/Newsroom/Press/NewcastleAirportsDigitalStrategySoarsSuccess.htm

In among the self-congratulatory back-patting over their social media strategy, it seems they're now offering free wi-fi.

In a move to further bolster the airport’s digital commitment, Newcastle International customers can now access free Wi-Fi in all SSP catering outlets at the airport including Starbucks, Caffe Ritazza, Eagle Bar Diner and the Wine & Deli Bar, to access the information they need whilst on the move. This new development is part of the airport’s continued focus on customer experience which aims to join up modern technology with customer service operations to enhance travellers’ journeys through the airport.

Graeme added: “Social media is proving an extremely effective way to reach our customers in the ever-changing aviation industry. Our aim is for the customer to always have an enjoyable experience at the airport, and this, combined with the newly-available free Wi-Fi, is another route to helping us achieve that goal. The next stage in our strategy will be implemented later in the year. We are working with leading web developer, Fivesite, to launch a brand new website in the autumn, this will include mobile and tablet versions. We see an exciting year ahead.”

It doesn't say explicitly, but I suspect 'free' means 'free with a purchase'.

Thanks for passing that on. I'll try it on Tuesday and try to remember to update this thread with the results!

There is WiFi but the reception is a bit tough. In the departures hall I only had reception when standing on the stairs towards the security check. Behind customs there was coverage in most places, but not everywhere!

I remember a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed thrusting young exec working at the airport who suggested to the management in early 2004 that one day free wi-fi would be standard fit and if they wanted to innovate they should install it as soon as possible.

Funny it's only taken them 8 years... :D
