What kind of upgrade should i expect when renting a standard or full size car?

What kind of "United club card" are you using and expecting to get an upgrade with? And just by using an Amex Plat card, are you supposed to get upgrades or do you have some other status as a result of it?

It depends on location and availability of cars. Most franchise locations you get little or no upgrades. Major airports upgrades are usually decent, you can walk out with a SUV no problem.

Also depends on how picky you want to be about an "upgrade", SUV could be a Rav4 or an X3, big difference.

You should "expect" nothing, and then you will be happy if you get one. Free upgrades are based on availability. Typically here there is no availability.

Correct, but you have to register for it through a special link and they will verify eligibility.

Just to be clear:

The United Mileage Plus Club credit card gives you membership in the AVIS Presidents Club.

Membership in the United Club (airport lounge) gives you nothing.

Why they continue to make the names of these credit cards so similar to their airport lounge is beyond me. People were confused when it was the Continental Presidents Club lounge too.

I almost always get an upgrade. Normally it's a car from a higher category but last week in Seattle they gave me a Ford Taurus with leather interior, Sirius radio and the back-up camera.

What'd you have booked? Personally, I love the new Taurus, especially the Limited ones, which sounds like it might have been what you got.

Ha, today I received my spot # and saw that it was a Taurus. I immediately took my paper and requested an Infiniti sedan. Maybe I should have tried out the Taurus.

Depends... which Infinit did you have? IMO, the Taurus is better than the G but the M is much better than anything. Sure, the Taurus won't corner like a G, but I feel cramped in a G and the amenities in the ones I've had were very poor.

I got my Taurus from a Standard rental and, yes, it was a Limited. This was the second day of the new Select and Go program so I really wanted to swap it for something else but the car was so nice I decided not to even look at my other options.

I own a G37x. There are no "amenities". The only option is navigation vs no-navigation.

What amenities did you find lacking? I love my G37.

I usually go grab the ticket from my car, take it back to the counter and see what they can offer me. Most airport locations will def. try to accomodate you within reason. I usually book a standard class car and have gotten mustangs, SUVs, chargers, etc...

Well I think to each their own. My flts were late this week so when I arrived the Infiniti's were gone so I opted to try the Taurus. Nice car by all means, just not for me. The turn signal mechanism on some of the newer Fords really bugs me and I see the center console display as cluttered and not an intuitive system to navigate (at least for someone that isn't familiar where the all of the audio/climate buttons are) especially while driving.

Not to get us too off-topic (and I'm a few weeks behind) but the G37 has a few option packages (plus some sport packages as well). The Premium Package (moonroof, premium audio, power telescoping wheel, memory, a few other things) and a Technology Package (Intelligent Cruise Control, rain sensing wipers, a few other things) and the Nav option mentioned are all optional. So the difference between a purely base model and a fully loaded model adds up.

Not sure how the Avis ones are typically configured, haven't gotten one in a few years (may have been a G35 at the time)

PS - didn't mean to add the thumbs down to the post....no offense to anyone here, sorry.
