Hey guys,

Looking at going to Rome in October and am wondering if Via Sforza would be a safe area to stay in - it sounds like pickpockets are an issue everywhere in Rome so I was worrying more specifically about muggings/violent crimes. Especially as it is quite close to Termini which seems to be a bit of a crime hotspot. I'm female and i'll be with my mother, we aren't idiots but we don't look remotely Italian.

Prefered comparisons would be with central London (which I go to quite often - I've never been robbed there(or anywhere else, i'm either lucky or i'm doing something right)) and Manhattan (which felt pretty safe to me, only been once but I had no problems)

I go to Rome a few times a year and it seems no more dangerous to me than say, London, New York, Paris or Washington, DC (where I live). Don't walk around with an open purse, count your money in public or appear both highly wealthy and intoxicated and you should be fine, or at least as fine as you'd be in the middle of any other big city. Be careful after dark, but no more than in any other major city center.

Violent crime is extremely rare in Rome. Be alert for pickpockets, but they will lift your wallet without you ever knowing - no mugging.

i think the pickpocket count is highest in rome of the mentioned cities, and second highest in paris. as far as danger, cabs in rome are right up there with cairo. crossing the street in any of the 5 is a life threatening occurrence(the head of the Egyptian museum was run over and killed in front of the museum).

Pickpockets and sleight of hand merchants are very common in Rome, more common than the other places mentioned. Part of this is climate, in cold weather it is easier to secure things inside a coat. The solution for this is not to keep significant amounts of money in wallets or bags that are close to hand and so not worry about it.

And the traffic is not by any means as bad as Cairo.

Come on, seriously?

Cairo?

Pickpockets in Rome are not an issue if you are smart enough not to travel showing off all your goodies.

Cabs are not dangerous at all, any time of the day and the night.
