Hello,

I apologize in advance to the mods if this is in the wrong place, I have been more of a lurker for awhile now instead of a poster, feel free to move or delete if needed.

I am interested in trying to go on some mileage runs to get elite status with an airline. The problem is, I have never done anything like it before and have no idea where to start. I have read this forum for awhile as well as used google to its full potential but most of the time feel myself lost on where to even begin. I think I am a pretty smart guy, but some of the stuff people talk about is like a different language to me, and my Belgian wife would be quick to tell you I am not so good when it comes to other languages.

Even people here might think I am crazy because I am looking to do this mostly for the sake of doing it. I do not travel for work, I usually travel twice a year to Europe and back(however I would like to travel more). I just really enjoy flying and being in an around airports, so while a mileage run may be business to some, I actually think the money I spend on them will be like spending money on something I enjoy anyway, so I am willing to take random trips just for the miles, or to cities I may want to stop and see for the day.

However, as I stated, I do not know where to start at all, so I am wondering if there is anybody here that might be willing to set up a time on Gchat, or skype, or via email to break this entire thing down barney style for me, from start to finish, as well as listen to what you will probably think are extremely silly questions I might ask.

are you thru w/this thread?....if so we can ask for it to be closed....

if not, post your home airport & annual budget....

i would keep an eye on mr deals & spend a day or two visiting while mring when the price is right.....

many of us did the short visits rather than get off get back on mr's....

I don't know if it is good to be closed now. I pm'd boss but still have not gotten a response.

My home airport is DTW, well, it will be in about a month, right now I am still living in Europe but I am moving back in a couple of weeks.

I am not sure on the annual budget, that was the kind of thing I was thinking I would get sorted out when I felt like I knew what I was talking about/doing.

if you have the ticket coming back, be sure to join a ff plan for that carrier....

for program suggestions, post the carrier....

assuming you will be at dtw for a while, the choices air canada, ua, & us, all in *alliance....so pick 1....

i would probably do ua rather than us on the chance that us might merge w/ aa & i would bet that aadvantage will be the surviving program.....

if you generally go w/the low bidder, join a new program and get the mi....

I was actually looking at the UA program yesterday and was thinking about signing up for it. I didn't yet because I was hoping to learn as much as I could about what I am doing before picking out a program. I know the biggest carrier out of DTW is Delta, but I don't have to go with them.

So if I sign up for a FF program with UA, they would add the miles I flew on Air Canada onto my account?

thats what i understand.....the best way is to have the ua ff # to put in the res before you fly...then the mi should post automatically.....you can send in bps after the flight for credit, but you must be a member before [maybe on] the flight date....

btw....what is barney style?

Sorry about Barney Style, it is kind of Army slang meaning that you have to explain this to me slowly and like I am a little kid otherwise I won't get it.

But if you pre-dated Mayberry, you also pre-dated Barney. :D

you should read thru the ua forum a bit & come up w/a status level to shoot for this year....watch the mr deals, if a good one shows, you can try to hook up with it.....or, go somewhere for a weekend just to see it, also w/ a decent fare....get in early on 2x pqm promos....
