There are no domestic flights in Australia operated by *A airlines. UA operates a LAX-SYD-MEL flight however they do not have 5th freedom rights on the SYD-MEL sector so it cannot be booked. You will have to go with a non *A carrier

From what I remember of 8th freedom flights you have to complete the rest of the designated route in order to be eligible. For example you can fly SYD-LAX(stop)-JFK on the QF flight but you can't fly LAX-JFK without starting in Australia.

Indeed, as both MEL and SYD are in the same country. A fifth freedom flight requires the "extra" segment to be between different countries.

For example you can fly SYD-LAX(stop)-JFK on the QF flight but you can't fly LAX-JFK without starting in Australia.Under US law, you can use the QF LAX-JFK flight as long as you start/end outside the US. It is QF that restrict that to must have used/be using a QF flight to/from Australia. There is nothing under US law preventing someone from for example, flying NRT-LAX on MH then onto JFK on QF or LAX-JFK on QF connecting to AMM on RJ.
