Don't know about UA but as far as TSA goes:

Carry his ashes with you. Don't ever check them (him) in.

Which country? Are you flying for instance US to Germany? The country of departure and of arrival matter in this case.
Germany for instance has specifc rules about transporting human remains.

You may want to read some of the previous discussions about it

and pack them in a way that identifies them and ask for some respect should they need to examine them. I would also pack them in something strong, sturdy and see through (like a clear hard plastic box) and seal that up tight identifying them so they can look and hopefully not have to open.

TO Vietnam FROM another country? Or FROM Vietnam TO another country? Are you connecting anywhere?
Again, this may make a significant difference in the responses.

I am getting ready to do the same thing on a US domestic trip (on United).
United told me that I can take the cremated remains either as carry-on or in checked luggage.
My personal feeling is to carry them on board with me. I agree with YVR Cockroach that you should not pack them.
But I will only have to clear TSA screening at ORD and I will be done. I cannot find any data on the requirements for transiting at HKG. I do not think it would be an issue, but you may want to post a question in the Hong Kong/Macau travel forum.

re: detroit>>hongkong>vietnam connect
You are leaving from Detroit, so you can leave extra time to go through security, no problem. I would get to the airport 3 hours early just in case.
You are asking what if there is a problem in Hong Kong and you miss your connection- you should book flights if you have not already that leave extra time for connection, but I don't think anyone here can predict how long it will take.
I would read the advice of how to pack the ashes for carry on.
Good luck.

If you carry them on, any additional check should be short. You explain they are ashes of your father. Let them put them through the xray machine again to confirm nothing is hidden in the box/urn. That should not delay you at all.

As others have said, do not check the ash if at all possible and when you put the urn thru security, make sure the cover is on tight as if the TSO want's to inspect the urn, you don't want them spilling it (and it has happened)

I thought I would post an update. I carried cremated remains of a family member through T1 at ORD last week.
I put the box with the ashes in my carry-on. I had removed any metal tags from the ash containers and made sure that all the packaging had no metal.
I cleared PreCheck and put my carry-on with the ashes on through the xray machine. The bag was selected for manual screening.
I told the agent what was inside. He was extremely courteous and respectful. He told me that he needed to swab it and test it. I asked that he use new gloves and swabs. He indicated that that would be normal processing. I took his gloves off and put on a new pair. He swabbed down the outside of the box (a cardboard outer box) and then removed the plastic ash container form the crematory and swabbed it. The inner box was placed in a plastic tray and xrayed by itself.
After the secondary xray, he brought the plastic crematory box back and put it back in to the cardboard. He then apologized for having to do it and expressed his condolences.
The entire process took about 10 minutes.
I am sure that after the recent ash spilling episode in the news, they were on their toes and were making sure it was all done perfectly.
