What's the cheap/easy way from LCCT(Low Cost Carrier Terminal) to city (say, bukit bintang)? 2. What's cheap/easy way from city(bukit bintang) to Genting (for family of 12)? 3. Cheap laundry (by kilos preferably) around KLCC or bukit bintang area? Thanks in advance. eponymous_coward Jun 11, 12, 10:32 pm Hotel recommendations in Penang and Langkawi would be welcome. Hi, it's my pleasure to help=) 1. How many of you are traveling from LCCT to Bukit Bintang? The cheapest way will be taking shuttle bus to KL central and then change to LRT, the total cost will be about RM10 per person. May I know which hotel you are staying? So that, I can let you know which LRT station you can get out from=) But remember, this may take up some time and energy, looking for the correct LRT line to get on will need some help from the people around=) Some information that maybe helpful=) http://www.lcct.com.my/transportation/aerobus/about-aerobus http://www.myrapid.com.my/rail/routes If you wanna save up some time and energy, and if you are traveling in a large group, then maybe you can try to ask for shuttle from your hotel, taking a taxi or prebook a private shuttle. But that would properly cost you up to RM20 per person=) You may wanna email some of the private shuttle providers. Some information : http://www.lcct.com.my/transportation/taxi-services http://www.ahboontravel.com/content.php?p=aboutus 2. The cheapest would be taking the shuttle bus from KL sentral=) http://www.gogenting.com.my/en/express/klsentral.htm It's possible to get private shuttle as well, again price varies. Email the shuttle providers mentioned above for the price. It may cost up to RM25 per person. However, personally I would recommend you to take the shuttle bus from KL sentral=) 3. From what I know they normally count it by piece including ironing, about RM5. I think the best thing to do would be ask your hotel stuff. It depends on where you are staying. Bukit Bintang is quite huge, and I don't think you wanna go from one corner to the other with bags of clothes=) There are a lot of laundry shops along Jalan Imbi and around Jalan Alor. Jalan Alor is I would say a must go place if you are looking for some nice and cheap local food, go at night yeah, it's more happening=) tomy77 Jun 12, 12, 9:41 am Hi, it's my pleasure to help=) 1. However, I would suggest you to play safe and stay at hotel chains in Penang and Langkawi, like SPG, Westin or Shangri-la, if your budget allow=) Regards=) Hotel recommendations in Penang and Langkawi would be welcome. tomy77 Jun 12, 12, 11:59 am Sorry, forgot to ask also. How about SIM card? Which one's better/cheap? Where can you get one (LCCT or Bukit Bintang area)? Oh, and recommendations for Jalan Alor food also. Anything that stands out? Or just go where there's long line? Dolphinyong Jun 12, 12, 12:03 pm Sorry, forgot to ask also. How about SIM card? Which one's better/cheap? Where can you get one (LCCT or Bukit Bintang area)? Get it in LCCT airport, I think it saves you much of the trouble. About which company is better, I would suggest DIGI, the price is more or less the same actually, but DIGI line is more stable I would say=) Feel free to ask me any questions=) _______________________________________________ PM me for marriott referral, 2000 points/stay for each of us=) Jailer Jun 12, 12, 2:04 pm Hotel recommendations in Penang and Langkawi would be welcome. Thanks :) Dolphinyong Jun 13, 12, 2:18 am Hmm, that's super peak hours in downtown of KL and Bukit Bintang area, would recommend you to take KLIA express from airport to KL central, then take LRT from KL central to Ampang Park station. Im wondering what is fastest/cheapest mode of transport from/to KLIA to my hotel in KLCC? is it LRT + Airport Express train? My flight leaves KLIA at 13:30, what time do you think id need to leave my hotel? Dolphinyong Jun 13, 12, 9:51 am Thanks Dolphin:) Of course, immigration/baggage might delay me a bit as well - what time does rush hour die down? I can't believe the LRT is much fun at peak times... Bukit Bintang is busy the whole night, I really wouldn't wanna risk to be on the road. I was stuck in the traffic twice, once around Shangrila KL area around 8pm for about 1 to 2 hours, and another time around the area at late night, I was stuck there for hours, you can move faster on foot, seriously. The LRT would be busy, but the frequency would be high, so not a big problem actually. Just be aware of your belongings, it's the same rules to be obeyed when travelling at any underground or whatsoever in every corner of the earth=) Dolphinyong Jun 13, 12, 11:10 am Just saw this thread, its very useful! Dolphinyong Jun 13, 12, 12:21 pm Hi, tomy77, how many of you are traveling from KLIA to Westin KL hotel? KLIA express is kinda expensive if you are not rushing. It cost 35MYR per person and you need go from LCCT to KLIA by shuttle or taxi for the KLIA express, it would take you another 20 to 30 minutes.. However, it wouldn't be hard to change from KLIA express to LRT at KL sentral, they are in walking distance, just follow the signs or ask the people around=) If you are traveling in a huge group of people, you might also wanna consider having shuttle directly to your hotel provided by this company : http://www.starwira.com/ It costs you MYR18 per person all the way from KLIA to your hotel. On what day do you arrive? If you are arriving on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, the traffic at night would be very heavy. If you are arriving on weekdays, it should be fine after 8pm I would say=) Do report back on the traffic condition once you get back please, your information is highly appreciated=) Hopefully the bus shuttle company has some 'magic route' to avoid the traffic=) Regards=) Oh, no. i'll be arriving also around that time. Any recommendations on where to go and where to stay? Dolphinyong Jun 20, 12, 1:45 pm Hi, Tioman island is the well-known place for snorkeling in West Coast of Malaysia, you can take a flight from Kuala Lumpur to there, or there's also ground transport available. Perhentian island is the other hidden gem, it's more conserved I would say, nicer of course but few transportation option. The best of all for snorkeling I would say is Sipadan island located at the east coast of the Malaysia. It's ranked among the best diving/snorkeling spot in the world. But I have to tell you that there was a kidnap happen to travelers by the rebels in South Philippine, I can't remember the exact year of it, but it's some time ago... to the OP -- I'm looking for the best snorkeling opportunities in Malaysia for a trip in December. Any recommendations on where to go and where to stay? donlind Jun 20, 12, 5:01 pm Thank you, Dolphinyong! eponymous_coward Jun 20, 12, 6:57 pm Beg pardon, but my understanding after reading up was that Tioman and Perhentian were on the east coast of Malaysia, and that the winter monsoon tended to make that a chancy place to visit (possibility of lots of bad weather, lots of places closed due to little tourism): http://wikitravel.org/en/Tioman http://wikitravel.org/en/Perhentian_Islands I was researching this because I am actually planning travel to that region myself in December/January, though on the west coast near Penang (and considering Langkawi, as it has some snorkeling there). The winter monsoons don't really hit that region (they get more in the summer). Dolphinyong Jun 21, 12, 5:39 am Hi, thanks for your information. I should be more clear on that...Malaysia is divided into 2parts, East Malaysia and West Malaysia...I should say that Tioman and Perhentian island is at East coast of West Malaysia...My mistake,sorry... About the raining...It's raining throughout the year in Malaysia, and normally there's more rain in April and October. However, it seems that weather is changing globally, and it's really hard to predict it nowadays. It's true that the monsoon rain will affect the weather from Oct to March at the East coast of West Malaysia...But normally it's very rare to have rain for one week consecutively, but again, it's hard to predict... Langkawi is a good place for tourist and also for snorkeling, but I would rank it after those islands that I mentioned. However, Langkawi and Penang island is good for a family trip, there are some other nice places to visit there=) Beg pardon, but my understanding after reading up was that Tioman and Perhentian were on the east coast of Malaysia, and that the winter monsoon tended to make that a chancy place to visit (possibility of lots of bad weather, lots of places closed due to little tourism): http://wikitravel.org/en/Tioman http://wikitravel.org/en/Perhentian_Islands I was researching this because I am actually planning travel to that region myself in December/January, though on the west coast near Penang (and considering Langkawi, as it has some snorkeling there). However, Langkawi and Penang island is good for a family trip, there are some other nice places to visit there=) So would you agree or disagree with this statement that Wikitravel has in the link I posted above? Due to the eastern monsoon, the season in the Perhentians (and all other east coast islands) is effectively limited to the period between the beginning of March or April until late October. Outside this period the seas can be very rough and choppy, skies overcast, and with currents that make swimming dangerous and most (though not all) accommodation options are closed. Do not believe the travel-agents when they claim the accommodations are open. Even if they will provide a room, restaurants and all shops (i.e. no place to get water, food, sunscreen etc.) are closed in off-season. If the restaurant is open, food choices will be very limited and over-priced. When going during off-season be aware that there will be literally no one there but you and maybe a handful of locals. That would be my concern in visiting that region: the possibility of very limited services for tourists, and weather making snorkeling rather questionable. Granted, no crowds can be a plus. That being said, any wiki where anyone can edit probably needs some additional confirmation... :) Dolphinyong Jun 21, 12, 11:01 am I agree on what is written on your Wikitravel link. It has correctly described those island. My point is, the chance of you to meet the rain in Perhentian and Tioman island during the monsoon season is probably the same or slightly higher than the chance of you to meet the rain in other period of year, it's hard to say. So, let me put in this way, if you wanna to have a safe & secure snorkeling, you should go to Langkawi island, but it's not as nice as other islands. If you wanna risk a bit in order to enjoy something better, then head to Perhentian island or Tioman island. If you're seeking for the best while willing to face higher risk, then head to Sipadan island. It's about give and take... It's up to you=) Regards=) So would you agree or disagree with this statement that Wikitravel has in the link I posted above? Thanks. I'm actually more concerned about ocean conditions/monsoon/nasty weather and being sure that everything isn't closed up for business, than just a bit of rain at 25 Celsius when you're going to be swimming/snorkeling and getting wet anyway, who cares about that? :) But ocean conditions that are bad/dangerous for swimming are a bit different than getting rained on. That and if most of the restaurants/hotels/places to get services are closed, it can make things a bit of a hash. I don't mind going places in offseason so much- I've been to CUN and the Yucatan in July, for instance, and spent time in SE Asia in summer, Germany and Europe in February- places that are definitely in low season for tourism when I've been there, but there's still plenty of infrastructure for tourism there. It just strikes me that that region of Malaysia calls for a lot of "local knowledge" if most of the tourist spots are completely shut down (it seems the east coast of peninsular Malaysia and Eastern Malaysia are definitely less touristed than the Andaman Sea/Malacca Straits side, which is both good and bad, depending on what you are looking for) and there's higher chances of bad weather throwing wrenches into things. Would you have recommendations? How would you rank TAR Marine Park (http://wikitravel.org/en/Tunku_Abdul_Rahman_Marine_Park) in the scheme of things, compared to the place you've mentioned? Pulau Payar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulau_Payar)? Dolphinyong Jun 22, 12, 11:33 am Yaya...I should mention that the condition of ocean must be taken into account...TAR Marine Park is nice also, but I would recommend to pay a visit to Sipadan island too if you have reached TAR Marine Park, and again, safety must be taken into account. You can visit Payar Island also if you are visiting Langkawi island=) They are hidden from the monsoon season=) Regards=) Thanks. Dolphinyong Jun 27, 12, 5:39 am Hi, Thanks so much for the info. I will be staying at the Intercontinental KL ( formerly Hotel Nikko). My flight arrives at 810PM in LCCT so I am guessing here that I will be clearing customs around 9PM. Can you please advise which is the better choice between a private taxi or a star shuttle limo or star shuttle bus. Travel time? Cost? Cheers! Option 1 : Take shuttle bus from LCCT to KL Central (MYR 8, 1hour roughly) then take LRT from KL Central to Ampang Park station which is within walking distance to Intercontinental KL ( MYR 2, few minutes ) There are several different bus shuttle company that provide shuttle service from LCCT to KL Sentral, you will see those counters at the arrival hall, just pick the colour you like there are almost the same=) http://www.lcct.com.my/transportation/aerobus/about-aerobus http://www.lcct.com.my/transportation/skybus/about-skybus Option 2 : If you have a lot of luggage then maybe you wanna take the star shuttle directly to your hotel, it costs MYR 20 and takes roughly 1hour or so, you better ask the counter before you buy the ticket, I think the same bus will bring the passenger to different hotels in Bukit Bintang area, so you may be the first one to get off the bus but can be the last as well. http://www.starwira.com/ Option 3 : Taking taxi is easy, but it costs about MYR 70. Sorry for late reply. Hope it helps=) RussellJ Jun 27, 12, 7:23 pm Hi, Thanks so much for the info. I will be staying at the Intercontinental KL ( formerly Hotel Nikko). Just to give you some experience of what we encountered in March when we landed at LCC (approx 2.30pm) & stayed at Berjaya Times Sq-every connection went as well as it could & it still took us 2hrs to get to hotel. This is what we encountered-Flight departed on time & landed a few minutes early. We disembarked down stairs & it was a long walk to the terminal but 99% under cover. No immigration form, received a stamp, some bags were already taken off the carousel by the time we arrived to collect! We then walked straight out of the airport - no checks seemed be happening. LCCT to Berjaya Times Square Hotel We opted for the combined bus/transit train to Sentral & then monorail & purchased bus/train ticket on the way out of airport. Found the bus ok (it was just pulling up) & then a 20 odd minute ride to Selak Tinggi Station for the transit train- very quiet & we were there about 15 minutes before the train arrived. Train was modern & clean, plenty of room for bags but no racks. Arrived at Sentral & had to make a bit longer walk around to monorail as there were building works going on. Purchased tickets for monorail (get a blue token) & did the quick 4 stop trip to the station that is linked to the hotel. The connections all worked well although the reality was it was 2hrs from touchdown until we walked in the hotel door. Dolphinyong Jun 28, 12, 11:04 pm Hi, Thanks a lot for your information. I don't really recommend to take the bus from LCCT to Salak Tinggi then take the train from there to KL Centre, and so on. It certainly takes more time and it costs more or less the same if you take the shuttle bus straight away from LCCT to KL Centre. The train that you took from Salak Tinggi is the means of transport that I personally don't like the most, they are always not on time, slow and sometimes can get very crowded. And pickpocket happens from time to time at the train, so must be careful. More information/feed back are highly appreciated=) Regards=) Just to give you some experience of what we encountered in March when we landed at LCC (approx 2.30pm) & stayed at Berjaya Times Sq-every connection went as well as it could & it still took us 2hrs to get to hotel. It's a huge help for people who aren't familiar with Malaysia. I've got 2 questions for you. 1) What what be a good amount of time for a family to spend in KL for their first visit? 5 days? more? less? 2) Would you say the Sheraton Imperial or the Westin would be a location for getting out a walking around where the action is? malty.one Jun 30, 12, 6:25 pm We were in KL last summer, the Sheraton Imperial is 2 blocks from the subway, very central. The Westin was more central but a higher category, not worth the extra $ in my mind. We spent 3 days, seemed enough but are heading back as using air asia you have to at some point transition through KL. TIP - Watch the return fare from the hotel, if you leave early (i.e before 6 am - we had an 8 am flight out) you will pay dearly. Taxi meter rates double (?100USD to airport?). You cannot negotiate. Also, the hotel can send someone to line up for your tickets to the Petronas Towers - the cost doubles but who wants to get up at 5 am to line up for tickets when on holiday, still reasonable... You can also request a view of the towers, we did and were accommodated. The Batuu caves would be a good spot for your trip too - accessible via subway and very cool (you may see monkeys and can opt to pay as we did for the bat caves - watch the roaches underfoot)... Dolphin, we would like to visit a second spot, Kota Kinabalu seems to offer quite a lot (attractions, beach, mountains etc). Would you think this a good second city to visit? Thanks a lot for your stay review, Malty.one, it certainly helps. The taxi shouldn't cost that much, the best may be to ask about the hotel shuttle if your flight is that early, it wouldn't cost 100usd. Or else you can always take a taxi to KL central station, and from there, take the airport shuttle. The distance from hotels in Bukit Bintang to KL central is not very far, so even you met some dishonest taxi driver, the cost wouldn't be so high. The shuttle starts as early as 3am, the journey would take approximately 1 hour, and the price is still the same as the daytime price. Kota Kinabalu is a fantastic city. As you said, the beaches are one of those most beautiful in the world. Reserved forest there worth a visit too. TAR marine park and Sipadan island are wonderful place to relax yourself. I have to tell you that it happens some ten years ago a mass caucasian kidnap case at Sipadan island by the rebellious army from Philippines. Can't comment about the security now at this island. It actually depends on what kind of pace you prefer. Usually my gf and I like to have slow pace of travelling, we would go back the hotel in the afternoon to have a short nap, then continue till night for example. With your plan to stay at Seraton/Westin, I supposed you prefer the relaxing way of trip. If so, 4days 3nigts should be enough. The weather in Malaysia is kinda hot nowadays, having a bath and nap in the afternoon might make your trip more relaxing and less tiring. 2. Westin KL is right in the heart of the Bukit Bintang, shopping malls are all around you. Sheraton is not far to those shopping malls too actually, but might require some walking. However, if you plan to have a visit to Petronas tower, the National Mosque and some 'Must Visit' tourist spots, you will need the LRT somehow. Both hotels are within walking distance to LRT stations, so it came to the question of how much you would like to spend for your accommodation. Sorry for late reply, was busy last few days=) goAsia Jul 3, 12, 8:26 am Thanks, Dolphinyong. That helps me a lot with our travel plans. I tried looking at maps to get a feeling for where the SPG properties were but never could tell exactly where how far stuff was from them. I think we may go with the Westin. shahr04360 Jul 6, 12, 1:14 am Good to know this thread. beachfan Jul 6, 12, 1:38 pm Nice thread Dolphinyong, thanks for your kind assistance! I am thinking of 13 days in Malaysia. I know I want 3 days in Penang, and at least 3 days on the island of Borneo. One question: If I have four days to spend between Melacca and KL, should I split it 2 and 2 or should I do Melacca as a day trip from KL? Another question: Should I spend some time in Langkawi or spend longer than 3 days in Kota Kinabalu (or somewhere else in Eastern Malaysia). (I've looked at the East Coast of Western Malaysia, but because of the time of year, February, I'm afraid the snorkeling won't be good due to choppy water). Thanks! You're welcome, it's my pleasure to help=) 1 : I will suggest you to spend 1day in Melacca and 3days in KL. Visiting the historical part of Melacca would be sufficient, and 1day is enough. 2 : 3days for Penang island is enough. You can take the ferry to Langkawi island. Snorkeling at Langkawi island during February is a nice choice as it's hidden from the monsoon season, it's a shopping heaven as well. Kota Kinabalu is a nice city, you can visit the rain forest there at Mount Kinabalu, it's fabulous. However, one of the nicest island there like the Sipadan island will be affected by the monsoon season in Feb. But you might wanna spend some time to visit the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park (islands) at the Borneo, it's not affected by the monsoon season in Feb. So, it's up to you whether you wanna have snorkeling + shopping or a more near to nature snorkeling. Hope it helps. Regards. tomy77 Jul 11, 12, 1:59 pm Would like to report back on last trip to KL. 1. I took train from KLIA to Sentral. Then taxi from KL Sentral to bukit bintang, since i had big luggage and not feeling lugging it around to monorail. BIG MISTAKE. True to Dolphinyong report, traffic to Bukit Bintang was really a nightmare on Friday evening (5:30pm). And to top it off, the taxi stand in Sentral is really awful. They "sold out" on the cheapest option, and only have the "premium" one. (sorry, i forgot the exact fare, i think it might be > RM 40). And we had to wait really long too. Not sure what's premium about the ride, it's an old, beat-down car. Bottom line: If you want taxi, might as well took it from KLIA. It came up cheaper (RM 75 total i believe), and no hassle waiting taxi in Sentral. Otherwise, take train, then switch to monorail. 2. If you're with big family, might be cheaper to hire a transport/van. We got got a number from a friend, for a guy with a van. His van is pretty big, and it fits 11 adults + 1 kid with a lot of luggage. He does hourly (i think RM 40-50?). and i think RM 100 to KLCC from bukit bintang. Way cheaper than any other alternative, since there's 12 of us. PM me if you'd like his #. 3. Accomodation, we stayed at Westin and DoubleTree. I highly recommend both. Westin is location is perfect, in the middle of Bukit Bintang. But regular price is too expensive for KL i think (i used cash+point). Nice large room and bathroom. DT on the other hand, is really cheap (around $90). Really nice/new property, and they treat Diamond/Gold really well. It's short walk from monorail station (ampang?). tomy77 Jul 11, 12, 2:16 pm Her are some nice websites selling restaurants, hotels or spa vouchers from time to time. It saves me some money when I travel in KL=) Read the fine print carefully though. http://www.milkadeal.com/ http://www.groupon.my/deals/klang-valley-kuala-lumpur/shabu-one/716133948 http://www.mydeal.com.my/deals/kuala-lumpur/Dining-Cash-Voucher-for-only-RM25nett-instead-of-RM50-Ristorante-LOpera-Piccolo-Mondo http://www.ilovediscounts.my/klang-valley/ http://www.jackcow.com/ Send me your email if you're interested, so I can send you referrals and I can earn some credits=) Regards Livingsocial also has KL deal (and a couple other cities in malaysia i believe). I got some, and it got honored just fine. (also remember, Livingsocial always has buy 3 get 1 free. So just refer to yourself if you want even better deal :) Essentially another 25% off) Also, always note the valid date of those vouchers. I almost got burned when i realized the validity is like 2 weeks after my trip. Good thing LS voucher took a while to process, and i managed to cancel once i noticed a couple of days later. Dolphinyong Jul 12, 12, 12:44 am Hi, tomy77, thanks a lot for your trip report. It surely helps the others. A million thanks=) I overlooked your last post on this thread before you left for KL, sorry for that. Looking back on it, you asked isn't the KLIA express cost you RM12.50, is it true? On the website it's RM35... 1. Sorry to hear that you got stuck in the massive traffic, 5.30pm is like the ultimate peak hour, walking on foot might be faster right...I got stuck twice there, it's unimaginable...However, I think you got 'robbed' by the taxi station, there's no such thing as cheap or premium taxi...Get only 'Metered-taxi' or get a hand written notice from the KL sentral information counter that you are looking for a Metered-taxi...Or the other trick is ask any Malaysian around you to get you a taxi, there will not be any 'premium' taxi then. Taking LCCT taxi straight away to Bkt Bintang can be the option, but you have to avoid the traffic as well. 2. Agree on that. I have posted the link for some car/van rental, for those who are interested, do email them to ask about the price beforehand=) Not necessary to tell them that you are from US or any foreign country, to avoid any 'robbing'...Just tell them you are arriving from East, North, or South Malaysia. 3. Glad that you found the vouchers valuable. Pay attention to the fine print though=) Once again, thanks a lot for your feedback. Hw's your trip overall? Regards. Taxis at Sentral do not run on meter, and at the KLIA Ekpress arrival hall taxi rank they have both budget (red & white) and premium (blue) taxis. 2 companies are given the exclusive rights to run the budget and premium service respectively, so they each have their own monopoly. And the fare mentioned for the premium service is the official fare, it is so outreageous I once asked them whether they use a Rolls Royce  The budget taxis are much cheaper but the drivers create an artificial shortage during peak hours. I once queued up for 1 hr when there were only 2 passengers ahead of me. Some of these drivers would park their taxis round the corner, and they would then approach the passengers with exorbitant fares or try to pool 2 or 3 solo travellers into 1 cab. Others would just sit on the bench smoking and chatting amongst themselves, and yes I can recognize their faces ! tomy77 Jul 12, 12, 6:15 pm Taxis at Sentral do not run on meter, and at the KLIA Ekpress arrival hall taxi rank they have both budget (red & white) and premium (blue) taxis. 2 companies are given the exclusive rights to run the budget and premium service respectively, so they each have their own monopoly. From what i understand in KL Sentral there's no meter taxi. Only 2 "official" taxi stands. and it runs on flat rate. So true, the "premium" is way too expensive. And the car was so not premium :) And there's long wait too (only 1 ahead of me). They said it's due to traffic jam, so no car yet. tomy77 Jul 12, 12, 6:24 pm Thanks, Dolphinyong. I think we may go with the Westin. Also worth to note if you stay at Westin, there's a connecting walk-away "bridge" from pavillion(?) mall across from westin, to a lot of places. It even connects up to Petronas tower. And the bridge has AC :) So really helpful during those hot days. sonomawine Jul 12, 12, 7:24 pm Perfect thread for our upcoming trip--Thanks Dolphinyong! There are certainly more information that I should gain in order to make this thread better. 1. I don't really recommend you to take the train from Penang to Kuala Lumpur. The long distance train in Malaysia is known as KTM. And what is famous about KTM is it's capability of DELAY. It happens very very frequent. My girlfriend's mum just got stuck at the train station for 2 hours because of the delay. I would recommend you to spend one more night at Kuala Lumpur. Just take the express bus from Penang to Kuala Lumpur. I think most Malaysia prefer the buses than train. The buses in Malaysia are kinda luxurious if you wanna compare them with those in Europe, however, there's no attached toilet on the bus. The bus driver will make several stopover along the highway though, no worry=) 2. Yes=) And it's crowded especially at Bukit Bintang area. 3. I looked on the hotel's location, it's situated near the city centre, and it's by the beach if not mistaken. So, it's perfect=) Enjoy yourself. And if possible, do give us some feedback after your trip. It would certainly help the others=) Thanks a lot. Regards. tomy77 Jul 13, 12, 9:41 am Thanks a lot for the information. Going to Singapore and Malaysia for around 6 days next week. Arriving in Singapore and going up to Johor Bahru to rent a car the next day and driving up to Melaka, KL, Genting, Cameron Highlands, Ipoh and finally leaving from Penang but haven't quite fixed the itinerary. Recommendations needed:) Also, I have heard recently about security issues in Malaysia...Is it a real problem? Any tips on driving in KL? Thanks. Dolphinyong Aug 1, 12, 6:23 am Hi, First of all, I would like to warn you about the public security in Johor Bahru. Be aware of robbers, it's an everyday issue. Don't go to places like petrol station or ATM early in the morning or late at night. Don't carry a handbag, handbag snatching is very frequent in Johor Bahru. Actually I would advise you to minimize your time in Johor Bahru, nothing much to see or eat there actually. Singapore transport system is very efficient, driving is not necessary I would say. 1day trip would be enough I think. Actually I don't really recommend you to drive in Malaysia, the road signs are confusing, even we, the Malaysian got confused sometimes. A GPS is a must I would say if you insist on driving. And traffic jam in Melaka, Kuala Lumpur and Penang can be exhausting. I would recommend you to take the buses actually. We have nice buses that travel from one state to another, they are luxurious, punctual and cheap. Compared to long-distance buses that I took in Europe, the long-distance buses in Malaysia and Singapore are much better actually, the seats are much wider and much comfortable. The only weak-point is that there's no toilet attached in those buses, however, the bus driver will stop at certain rest-house along the high-way, you can ask them to stop if they don't. You can take "5-stars tours" bus from Singapore straight away to Melaka. Then, take "KKKL" bus from Melaka to Kuala Lumpur. Then taking "KKKL" or "Transnational" buses from Kuala Lumpur to Penang or Ipoh. I would recommend you to spend a night in Melaka. It's the city of culture and history. The food there must be tried. You might need to catch a taxi or you can rent a car to go around Melaka. A 2 nights stay in Kuala Lumpur would be good for you since you only plan to spend 6days in Msia and Singapore. Don't drive in Kuala Lumpur unless you wanna taste the Malaysian traffice jam, no kidding, it might drive you crazy. Public transport like LRT is very efficient in Kuala Lumpur, it will bring you to every tourist spots that you wanna visit. I would suggest you to skip Ipoh, since you only have six days in total. Penang is a nice city. Food, culture, shopping etc...You might wanna visit some nice beaches in Penang or you can take a ferry to Langkawi island. In conclusion, I would recommend you not to drive from one state to another, it's tiring and would waste your time. Take public transport in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. You can take a taxi or rent a car to travel in Melaka and Penang. Skip Ipoh unless you have extra time. Hope it helps. Feel free to ask me any question=) Hi - first post on FT. Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said he would announce the special reward when the diving athlete returned from the Olympics. He said the reward would befit the achievement of the 19-year-old who became the first Malaysian woman to earn a medal in the 10m platform event. He said the people of Sarawak were proud to have an athlete from the state, in having bagged the bronze medal in the event. "She will be an inspiration to others," added Abdul Taib when asked to comment on Pandelela's feat. In the final at the London Aquatic Centre earlier today, Pandelela shook off a poor start to claw back and accumulate 359.20 points to finish behind gold medalist Chen Ruolin of China and Australia's Brittany Broben who took the silver. With the achievement, she will receive RM150,000 under the youth and sports ministry's incentive scheme and a monthly pension of RM2,000. Dolphinyong Aug 12, 12, 8:53 am Very sorry for late reply, I forgot to reply your question. Well, I have just stayed at JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur, everything there is of 5stars standard, actually better compared to some of the 5stars hotels in European countries which I have visited. It's just next to Westin hotel, closer to Pavilion Shopping Malls etc. Jalan Alor street food area is also within walking distance. I just checked the rate for your date it's RM 370 plus taxes after LNF discount. It has 2double bed in one room, so can accommodate 4 of you well, confirm the maximum capacity in a room with the hotel though=) It seems that they allow 3persons to stay at the same room without charges according to their website. Breakfast included=) If you are a Marriott gold or platinum member, you will get complimentary access to their cozy lounge=) If you are a marriott member, I think you must be more familiar with the elite member benefits and LNF. If not, just send me a pm, I will give you further information about LNF and elite challenge=) In terms of location, it depends on where you wanna visit in KL. If you wanna enjoy the shopping sales, then among your hotel shortlists, Westin KL is much more superior compared to the other two. If you wanna visit the petronas tower, national mosque etc, a hotel near to LRT station will be fine, Sheraton seems to be the one which is nearest to LRT station. In this case, you might wanna consider Renaissance KL, which cost you RM 240 plus taxes only with LNF discount, it's located right in front of a LRT station. Mandarin Oriental KL is a nice hotel, but it seems to situated at the part of city which you will need a taxi or car to go around. Taking a taxi straight away from Airport to your hotel might be better, I supposed you are arriving at KLIA airport right? KLIA express is not cheap (RM 35/adult/way and taking a taxi from KL central to your hotel is not cheap either. So, I would recommend you to take taxi straight away (RM 70 to RM110) from KLIA to your hotel=) Do report back about your trip yeah, it's very much appreciated=) Hope it helps somehow and sorry again for late reply. Edited to add that Pandelela was interviewed on American prime time Olympics' coverage and she was very likable and charismatic, it was fun to see her joy in representing her country. benzemalyonnais Aug 12, 12, 10:07 am Dolphinyong, glad to see you are back, as I am in need of a bit of urgent assistance/advice. Dolphinyong Aug 12, 12, 11:49 pm Hi, benzemalyonnais, I have contacted my friend staying in the city situated near to Perhentian island. Meanwhile, I did some searching online, even on Malay language websites, the accommodation offered is really limited, and those which are available are mostly homestay style. Maybe you wanna consider the property on Lang Tengah island, like the Sari Pacifica Resort Lang Tengah Island, it's available for last two nights of your travel date. Lang Tengah island itself is very nice and it's just 2.6km from Perhentian island. I will get back to you once I got some news from my friend=) Thanks so much! We, the Malaysian, when you talk about Tau Sar Piah, everyone will ask to go to Penang. But well, you can give me the address or the name of it, then I will ask my friend in Melaka. I know that everyone who visit Melaka would like to check out 'San Shu Gong', which is famous of the local delicacies, like Kuih Dodol etc. It's located at the end/beginning of the Jonker street. Try out Asam Laksa at Jonker88 along the Jonker street, don't be shocked by the queue by the way. It's a bit spicy though. Hope it helps somehow. What would be the probability of just showing up, and actually finding a room for the 4 nights. I have read online that half of the resorts on the smaller island don't accept reservations and cater more to the backpacker crowd. At this point, backpacker or luxury, I'll take whatever I can get.... Dolphinyong Aug 14, 12, 1:45 am Hi benzemalyonnais, it's about risk-taking then. You might be lucky to find one when you reach Perhentian island. I couldn't decide for you in this case, for me, I'm someone who would choose to play safe. Just a reminder for you, Malaysia summer school holidays fall between 16 Aug till 26 Aug, besides, 19 Aug till 21 Aug is public holiday for Malay New Year at the same time, in other words, these days are super peak period. Maybe you can book some cancellable reservation at some resorts available 1st while hunting for properties on Perhentian island when you reach there. It's totally up to you. My friend tried to look for some available resorts through local travel agent, but still no news yet, sorry for that. Good luck! Absolutely not - it's around three hours to Jerantut and then another couple of hours on the boat upriver. I have never stayed in Malaysia. The plan would be, 2 - 3 days viewing everything touristy that the city has to offer, then very keen for beach rest holiday (4 - 5 days) at Tioman Island, before heading on towards Europe. Now the questions (from my web research). Tioman by air. Berjaya Air only - are they safe and normally run to schedule ? Departure is from Surbang (SZB) - what are my options for getting to SZB from the city. Luggage restrictions will be a issue unless I'm prepaired to pay excess - 10Kg and 5kg hand (we will probably have 20Kg each, as this is the first week of 5). Tioman by bus and ferry from Mersing - ferry times are spasmodic and sometimes crowded. What would be your Tioman travel choice and why ? Any Tioman accomodation tips beyond what I see on TA ? Is there a good beach holiday option that I have overlooked and you would recommend (sand between the toes, a good book and a cold drink !!!) Dolphinyong Sep 2, 12, 11:41 pm Hi, Sorry for late reply=) Well, for me, I would choose the flight=) It's safe so far, and I hope it's always safe=) Of course, you can save quite a lot by taking land+ferry transport, but carrying your luggage and squeeze around in the bus station and ferry terminal might make you exhausted before you reach Tioman=) How to get there from KL? I would suggest you to take a cab if you are having some 20kg luggage with you. The fare is about MYR 28 only according to this website : http://www.taxiautofare.com/my/taxi-fare/Kuala%20Lumpur-taxi-fare-from-subang-airport-to-kl-sentral You might wanna check out Perhentian island as alternatives=) Do report back after your trip, it certainly helps the others=) Hope it helps. You can take "5-stars tours" bus from Singapore straight away to Melaka. Then, take "KKKL" bus from Melaka to Kuala Lumpur. I would recommend you to spend a night in Melaka. It's the city of culture and history. The food there must be tried. You might need to catch a taxi or you can rent a car to go around Melaka. I'm planning for a family (5 people) trip to Singapore and Malaysia between Christmas and New Year. It sounds like "KKKL" bus from Singapore to Melaka to KL is the best option. I have a few questions for you: 1). Is there a direct bus from Singapore to KL? 2). Is there a way to book KKKL bus tickets online? 3). The special high fare taxis I have only seen hanging around tourist venues. Last time I saw one was at KLCC. Someone was asking about transport to Genting. It has been a number of years since I have gone, but I think the best option is the share taxis from Puduraya. If you like using priceline.com, I have used the name your own price function to get the Renaissance, near the KLCC, for USD 44++. No problems with monkeys at Batu Caves. I have been there twice. Pulau Tioman I think is a little disappointing, if you have been to beaches in Thailand or the Philippines. The only advantage it has is that it is close to Singapore. For the guy who was looking for an outing from KL, I would do something else. Malaysian registered cars can only spend a certain number of days per year (can't remember, think it is ten?) in Singapore. So if you want to take a rental car into Singapore from Malaysia, you can't rent in Johor Bahru, undoubtedly it has been in Singapore all of its allotted days already. But if you rent in KL, it should be OK. This saves you a bunch of money as rental cars are much cheaper in KL compared with Singapore. I agree with Dolphin that Malacca is worth a short visit. Nothing is spectacular, but you can try their food, and it is cheaper than KL. I had a pleasant experience last time I was there. A tropical bird decided to visit me. He came up to my 6th floor hotel room. KKKL doesn't provide SIN-KL direct service, you will need to take public bus/taxi from Singapore to Johor Bahru then only from Johor Bahru, you can take the KKKL to KL. Previous FT plan to stay at JB, that's why I recommend him/her to take KKKL from JB to KL. For a direct bus from SIN to KL, check out this online booking websites : http://www.easibook.com/ A lot of bus companies provide super VIP coaches, those are fine. Be aware of the different drop-off points at KL. Choose one which would be easier for you to get to your hotel=) If you plan to stay at JW Marriott KL, choose the drop off point as IMBI or Berjaya Times Square, you can either take the LRT (1 station away) or taxi(few minutes away, if there's no traffic jam, avoid taking taxi during peak hour) from there. You might wanna consider to take Airasia flight from Singapore to KL, sometimes they promotional price which is comparable to the coach ticket price=) 2. You can't. 3. I just returned from Renaissance Melaka, will choose to stay there again when I visit Melaka again. They provide complimentary shuttle service to and from Jonker street/the famous red baba-nyonya house and also to the shoppinge centre. Book those shuttle service before-hand as early as possible though, they get full very fast=) If you wanna get to some historical spot in Melaka like the Porte de Santiago which is not far away, you will need a taxi (or maybe public bus, never take it before) Email the hotel before-hand to get room upgrade if you are a marriott platinum=) I got a suite upgrade there using LNF rate of RM 250 nett:D The location of JWM KL (and Westin KL which is next to each other) is perfect, shopping malls and nice eateries (Lot 10 and Jalan Alor local food) are all within walking distance=) Do report back after your trip, it surely helps the others=) Regards, Dolphinyong Awesome thread, Thank you Dolphinyong! Dolphinyong Sep 13, 12, 10:01 pm Hi,for those who are visiting KL, I strongly recommend you to eat at Lot 10 Hutong and Jalan Alor=) As a Malaysian, I always eat at these two places whenever I visit KL=) Lot 10 Hutong (http://www.lot10hutong.com/aboutus.asp) - About 5 mins walk from JW Marriott KL - It's actually a food court which gathers some of the best local food in Malaysia - Price range : app. USD 2 to USD 8 per dish/meal (Yes, I'm not kidding!!!) - Personally I love the prawn noodles, Penang Char Kueh Teow, Bah Kut Teh etc etc etc - It's air-conditioned=) - It opens from 10am to 10pm Jalan Alor - About 10 to 15 mins walk from JW Marriott KL - You would find a lot of people holding menu, trying their best to invite you to eat at their area, don't be freaked out=) - Which one along the street is the best? Follow the crowd=) Get the menu from the person who serves you, they have picture and price on it=) - It opens from 7pm or so till late night=) - Bring some tissue paper with you as most of them are open-area but some has air-conditioned indoor dining area. - Price range : app. USD 8 per head (typically we would ordered several dishes and share among each other, it's the way to enjoy the street food!!!) Hope it helps=) Regards, Dolphinyong Dolphinyong Sep 13, 12, 10:04 pm Hi, guys, I have just completed one night stay at JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur using Marriott Megabonus free night cert (pm me if you are not yet a marriott member and would like to be referred in order to get some extra points). About one week before our date of arrival, I emailed the hotel to ask for platinum complimentary room upgrade and perhaps 'something' special for my girlfriend's birthday. Got a reply almost immediately saying that they would take note about it. I didn't expect much actually as it's booked using free cert. They did ask for my girlfriend's name though. Besides we mentioned in our concierge email that we would arrive at 10am. Check-in process : We arrived at the hotel exactly at 10am. Our arrival was expected, a nice young gentleman (Mr. Jeoffery) was there waiting for us actually according to what he said (luckily we were punctual). He greeted my girlfriend and wished her happy birthday (she looked surprise and shy, ha). A lift attender is (and always) doing his job at the lift lobby. Mr. J led our way to our room which has been upgraded to a junior suite!!! However, we were stuck in the lift for about 10 minutes, zzz. Mr. J did his job well when we were stuck in the lift, totally professional. He brought us around our suite and briefed us about the platinum benefits. That was the best check-in process that I have experienced so far. However, he forgot to give us the platinum arrival gift card, I didn't utilize the platinum guarantee though as Mr. J doesn't deserve a complaint like that. Staff service : I would give them 11 out of 10. GM called to our room to apologize for the lift problem and wished my girlfriend happy birthday, afterwards, a huge set of chocolate with a hand-written card written by the GM was brought to our room as 'token of apology'. A plate of fruits and several boxes of chocolates were already there when we checked-in, my girlfriend took a box out with us when we go shopping, and they actually 'refilled' the missing box of chocolate when we got back 3hours later(o.O) Mr. J called our room saying that they have arranged 'something' special for my gf birthday and asked whether we would like to have wine or champagne. At 5pm, when we got back to our room, a 1kg chocolate cake, a bottle of champagne, macaron, chocolates, strawberries etc was already there (my girlfriend looked surprise and wonder how much would it cost, haha). We were allowed to invite one of my gf's aunt staying in KL to help us finish the cakes etc. Room (Junior suite) : The separate living area is not so spacious but cozy enough to accommodate 4 adults I guess. The decoration is stylish and modern. King-sized bed is perfectly comfortable. Bathroom was huge enough with a bathtub, a separate shower area and a separate toilet. A whole container of bath salt deserves a remark. A portable internet modem was provided and we were told that we can bring that modem out of the hotel, great isn't it!!! Lounge : Very high-class compared to the lounge in other Marriott hotels. Great view, great service. Food served during the cocktail hour has high quality but low quantity (better than the other way round isn't it?) I asked for some special non-alcoholic cocktail and the staff were nice enough to make something 'new' for us. She got back after a while to ask for our feedback, it's kinda too sweet for me, she immediately brought another glass of drink for me with different ingredients which is not so sweet=) I asked for a lemon from the lounge staff at night for our vodka, and she reopen the kitchen to bring us one=) Cheers!!! Breakfast : Free for gold/platinum member 7days a week. You can choose to have it in the lounge or the restaurant. We went for the restaurant breakfast as recommended by Mr. J=) That was the best hotel breakfast buffet which I have ever had so far at any marriott/non-marriott hotels across Asia and Europe. A wide variety of food, consisting of Western, Malay (local), Chinese and Indian cuisine. The food is excellent both in terms of quality and quantity. Do try some of the local food, which we, the Malaysian love!!! Besides, the settings of the restaurant deserves a remark, cozy and high-class=) Location : Absolutely perfect for both business and leisure purpose. It's located right the middle of shopping area with plenty of nice restaurants around. Try the local food at Jalan Alor which is about 10 minutes walk from the hotel, you won't regret=) The nearest LRT station is about 5 minutes walk away and please take the LRT when you are in KL, you might be stuck in super heavy traffic jam if you take the taxi, it's beyond your imagination. Just take care of your belongings well when you are taking the LRT. Checking-out process : It took 1 minute=) Overall 12 out of 10=) Public security tips when you are in KL : Recently there are a lot of teenagers/youngsters wandering around the shopping area in Kuala Lumpur, especially somewhere near to the LRT station. Remember, just ignore them!!! They would approach you with some 'forms' in hand, asking for your signature (for charity purpose they said, ya right), they will force you to give them money after you have signed it. It's allover our local newspaper here, and they have recently turned their target to foreigners. Some of them speak understandable English, but please, just pretend as if you couldn't hear them. Hope it helps some other FTers=) Regards, Dolphinyong=) Dolphinyong Sep 13, 12, 10:06 pm Hi, fellow FTers, I have just completed a stay in August 2012 and would like to share my experience. Hopefully it helps the others here=) Check-in process : Drinks were provided to every guest in waiting in the lobby. A friendly staff from the lounge brought us to our room and did the check-in process in the room. Platinum welcome gift card was given, chose the points, however, fruits and chocolate were given=) Room : Complimentary upgrade to 1-bedroom suite was offered one day before arrival. Spacious living area with a huge couch, flat-screen tv, writing desk and toilet. It can comfortably accommodate up to 6 persons I think. Bedroom itself is of standard size with comfortable bed (as usual). The bathtub which has jacuzzi function deserve a remark=) There's also a separate shower area. In-room wifi is provided for free, kinda fast for Malaysian standard. Lounge : Tables by the window offers fantastic view. A wide spread of hard liquor was offered during the cocktail hour (5.30pm-7.30pm). Fruits, desserts, cold and hot stuff are ok. Staff were professional and deserve a thumbs-up=) Breakfast : Free breakfast for gold/platinum 7days a week, including public holidays. As usual, was given the choice to have our breakfast in lounge or restaurant. Had it in the restaurant, 7 out of 10. Some main dishes were not refilled frequently. Wide variety of food but again, none of them actually attracted me, not bad though. Complimentary shuttle : A shuttle van (8-seaters) brought us to and back from Jonker street and Mahkota Parade/Pahlawan Parade. Remember to get the schedule from the concierge and book your place before-hand, the shuttle doesn't run frequently (about 4times daily) and they can only accept 10 passengers in total per trip. The driver was very friendly and punctual=) This complimentary shuttle is very practical as driving in Melaka isn't easy because of the confusing roads and traffic jam. Check-out process : This is the horrible part of our stay. The rate shown on the receipt is different (about 120 USD) from what I had on my reservation sheet. I believed that the staff forgot to change the rate of my room after they upgrade my room to the suite. The first FD required me to show her my reservation sheet, and I did (luckily I printed it out). Then another FD (the supervisor I think) checked 'something' in their system and said that everything should be alright while apologizing to me. After that he brought me to another FD (Miss N) and told her what to do, then he left. Miss N checked 'something' in their system again and told me that there's a rate difference which she would like to find out why, zzz. It seems that she doesn't believe me, neither to her supervisor. I told her what had happened and so forth, but it seems that she couldn't hear me. She doesn't know what is Marriott LNF, I explained to her and asked her to find out herself when I think she doesn't understand me. She made a call, asking something (which I couldn't understand what she was asking for) then finally hung up with her last sentence to the person on phone " I don't think you understand what I'm asking for ", hah, exactly! FINALLY, she allowed me to pay at the LNF rate while having a copy of my reservation sheet, which she should have done it long time before. To my astonishment, she ended my checking-out process without an apology, moreover, she said "It's the first time I see this kind of rate at a 5star hotel like us, it's kinda impossible" I'm a person who doesn't like to quarrel in public, so I just didn't bother her. That check-out process took me ONE HOUR in total!!! Overall, I would rate this hotel 8 out of 10. JeremyZ Sep 15, 12, 11:41 am [snip] Originally, I was thinking about staying at the new Grand Hyatt property. But it sounds like the Westin or JW Marriott may be better for tourist purposes? Have a look at the link for luggage storage : http://www.lcct.com.my/facilities/locker-and-luggage-storage I think u r flying by Air Asia for both flights, right? You can try to ask whether you can check your baggage in for both flights at once in Siem Rep so that you don't have to check-out and in your luggage at KL...Not sure about that though... Where to go for 8 hrs? You might be interested in places like the Twin tower, KL tower, Merdeka Square and some shopping in Bukit Bintang perhaps? I wouldn't suggest you to get the private charter...it won't be cheap, about USD 100 to USD 120 per day I guest... Instead, you can get airport shuttle bus from LCCT airport to KL central, which runs frequently and very cheap. For KL central, you can easily take the LRT/Monorail to those attractions...Alternatively, you can take the Hop-on and off bus from KL sentral which will bring you to the attractions in KL...http://www.myhoponhopoff.com/tourmap.php Save those extra money for nice food in KL=) Try 'Lot 10 Hutong' located in Bukit Bintang shopping area where all the best local food gather=) It's air-conditioned, no worry=) If you prefer the chartered service, try to ask the taxi at the airport, maybe they can offer you better price? I was leaning towards the Doubletree or Traders near the KLCC, but now I am thinking of the Le Meridien at Sentral because of the convenience to the KL Transit which is very well priced and convenient to get to/from the circuit (no traffic to worry about :)). However I have heard that Sentral is a bit of a dodgy area i.e. lots of pickpockets etc. Do you have an opinion on this and also where I should stay? I will be arriving late on Thursday and departing Monday afternoon - so Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be spent out at Sepang. I will have the evenings to have a small look around KL though, I have never been to Malaysia before. Dolphinyong Nov 17, 12, 1:47 pm Hi, if you are not interested in KL downtown at all (shopping, pub etc), then maybe you can just spend your time in quiet Sepang area, like the 5-stars Pan Pacific hotel, but I don't think you have anything else to do in Sepang besides the race. Alternatively, you can have a look of Pullman Putrajaya Lakeside, which is about 20minutes to Sepang. It's a resort, so you would have something to do outside the race-time. Or you can just stick with Le Meridian KL, it's connected to the KL central station (5minutes walk)...It's through that you have to watch out for pickpockets and some teenagers asking for 'charity donation' around downtown KL (just ignore them, it's a well-known scandal around that area), but it doesn't make much difference which part of KL you wanna stay at. Perhaps, Le Meridian KL would be safer as it's connected right to the station... Hope it helps, and do report back about your trip=) Regards. Dolphinyong Nov 20, 12, 3:57 am Hi, glad that I could help=) I would say it's not much difference to go to the Golden triangle during the daytime or at night...You have to be aware of pickpockets, especially in the LRT...Golden triangle/Bukit Bintang is very crowded and lively at night, shopping malls all around you, pubs etc, I think it's safer than some quiet district area... SAT Lawyer Nov 27, 12, 10:28 am I need to fly from TWU-TPE one-way (connection at BKI) in March. AK seems to regularly offer tantalizing sales, although I'd have to piece together TWU-BKI and BKI-TPE segments, ticketed separately. My preference, however, would be to fly MH, primarily because of the availability of an afternoon/evening connection. The MH fare has been holding constant at around 956 MYR for months on end. Can I ever expect MH to have a big fare sale and, if so, any idea when (are there particular months or particular holidays that typically yield MH sales), or am I realistically looking at the fare not moving down? Dolphinyong Nov 28, 12, 10:09 am Hi, Not sure whether this could help (I'm not very familiar with MH). Well, Malaysia school holidays fall on Nov and Dec, then another long holiday will start from 10 Feb till 17 Feb, if your travel date falls on these dates, then I don't think you could get cheaper price even if MH is gonna to have some sales...It's a trend in Malaysia that, the air ticket fare during the holidays is still the same although they are on 'sales'. And this is the school and public holidays calender in Malaysia for the year 2013 : http://www.onestopmalaysia.com/holidays-2013.html Regards. Dolphinyong Jan 1, 13, 12:54 pm Happy New Year, everyone. Hopefully, Malaysia is in your list of travel plan for 2013=) Please do report back here if you guys have visited Malaysia=) Different people, different perspective ; More opinions, more benefits=) And just wanna share with those who plan to travel to Kuala Lumpur, not to scare you off of course, but it's a little tips. Recently, a Singaporean tourist's bag was snatched by motorcyclist around Twin Towers area and it happens at 3pm on Sunday. So please, ladies, if possible, don't carry your handbag around and gentlemen, always walk/stand at the side of your partner with her handbag in between both of you. Last week, a couple was robbed at the carpark of Sunway Shopping Centre (one of the largest shopping mall in Malaysia located about 45minutes from the Bukit Bintang area, your hotel front desk might suggest you to shop there). That happens around 1am and the victim's girlfriend nearly got raped, the robbers gave up after the victim handed over more money to them. As what I know, Pavilion shopping center in Bukit Bintang has well-maintained security, where there's security guards (several of them) guarding the lift to the carpark after midnight, so I should say that's quite secure. There're several pubs located near to Pavilion shopping mall, that area is quite safe so far, but still, I wouldn't recommend the ladies to walk alone around that area at late night. All in all, everyone should stay alert and be responsible for his/her own safety when travelling in a foreign country. Hopefully these news and tips would alert you guys and help you guys to have a pleasant and safe travel in Malaysia. One World out of the way residential area close to big shopping malls and Ikea etc, more for locals. Dolphinyong Jan 2, 13, 4:36 am Agree to the advice above. To simplify : If your purpose of stay in KL is shopping only, go for One World hotel, the 1 Utama Shopping Mall is right next to the hotel, it's one of the largest shopping mall. If you wanna go for the tourist spots, Traders should be your choice=) Another point to be taken into consideration is that the traffic around One World Hotel is less heavy compared to KL central area=) Regards, Dolphinyong Have a one night stay in KL tonight. We had a great time as it was our first trip and will definitely return. Everyone is our party agreed that Malaysia is more interesting and lots cheaper than Singapore. We stayed in Singapore for 2 nights at the Grand Hyatt Singapore before heading to KL. We decided to try the bus from Singapore to KL. I booked tickets online with Transtar (http://transtar.travel/). The double decker bus has 18 single pod (Solitaire) style seats, similar to airplane business or first class seats, AVOD and lunch provided, we paid 60USD per person. The ride was 6 hours from Singapore Golden Mile complex to Bukit Bintang. In KL we stayed at JW Marriott. I contacted the hotel prior to arrival and was assigned a Junior Suite as a Platinum guest. Just as Dolphinyong reported I experienced great service from this property. I had dinner at both Lot10 and Pavilion across from JW. Food at Lot10 was cheaper, but the Pavilion food court has more varieties and better ambiance. I would definitely stay at JW again when coming back to KL. We went to Penang for a few days after KL. Penang was a very interesting town, especially Georgetown. While we enjoyed KL, Penang was the highlight of our trip. We stayed at the Traders in Penang and took the free hotel shuttle to their sister property, Golden Sands Resort in Batu Ferringghi for some beach time and night market. There are certainly more information that I should gain in order to make this thread better. 3. I looked on the hotel's location, it's situated near the city centre, and it's by the beach if not mistaken. So, it's perfect=) Enjoy yourself. And if possible, do give us some feedback after your trip. It would certainly help the others=) Thanks a lot. Regards. As requested here's our feedback: We had a nice stay at the E&O hotel in Penang. Good location, friendly staff, and a nice breakfast spread. The rooms are comfortable and we enjoyed having a separate sitting room. The hotel has a shuttle to their sister property, Lone Pine, which worked well for a few hours of beach time. Eating Asia helped plan our dining and we did a fun walking tour with Robyn. I highly recommend Robyn as she was informative and very easy to work with. The best thing is she taught us how to order food from the stalls. lnew Jan 8, 13, 9:02 am Hi, I saw some other thread about 'ask us about Phuket', so I decided to start this thread to answer your questions regarding hotels, transport etc for traveling in Malaysia=) thank you so much for this thread.off to malaysia on the 27th and would like to explore kl more lnew Jan 8, 13, 9:08 am hello dolhpinyong, would you be able to give me the location of the bus depot in the airport to take a bus to sitiawan please many thanks Neiltoo Jan 13, 13, 8:39 am We are flying into KLIA from HKG and then on to LGK. HKG - KUL on CX (reward ticket) and then KUL - LGK on MH (revenue ticket) so 2 different tickets. We arrive at 12.30 and depart at 14.15 I know this is tight but hope that if we can check bags through to LGK it is doable. First question is: can we check our bags through to LGK? Or do the bags have to go through customs at the first point of entry into Malaysia? I think I remember checking bags though from LHR to LGK a few years ago although that was all on MH. Because the short flight isnt expensive I have booked us on the 18.15 KUL - LGK flight as insurance but obviously we hope to make the first flight. I assume on the return journey that checking bags through from LGK to HKG will be more straightforward? We have 2.5 hours layover in KUL on the way back. The planned itinerary is currently: Singapore (3 nights) Malacca (1 night) Kuala Lumpur (2 nights) Penang (1 night) Langkawi (6 nights) I would like to travel between the destinations with private car transfers and by ferry from Penang to Langkawi. At the end of the trip, we plan to fly from Langkawi to SIN and back to Europe. I would appreciate following feedback: - Is May a good/suitable travel time? - Does the itinerary make sense (stress should be minimized) - Any other stops we should make on the way? - Is the ferry a safe/suitable/comfortable mean of transportation? Are there better/worse ferry companies? Or is it better to take a plane? imm2b Jan 15, 13, 12:48 pm Dear Experts, I am planning a luxury trip to Singapore and Malaysia (first-time visit) with my wife in May this year. Luxury bus transfer between Singapore - Malacca - KL. Then flights from KL-Penang and Penang - Langkawi. Car or ferry between these destinations waste too much time, unless you enjoy car and ferry. onebagtraveller Jan 16, 13, 5:02 pm Thank you for this thread and all of the helpful information! Just a few things to get started on my planning: 1. Is there something like Hong Kong's Octopus card for KL? Or better yet for Malaysia? Would it work across all metro, KLIA, and even things like KKKL bus? 2. I'm trying to decide between Penang, Melaka, and Langkawi (would be staying at Andaman) and how much time to spend in each. Is Melaka worth a 1 night stay or just a day trip from KL? I'm not usually just a beach type person but Langkawi sounds interesting enough for a few nights. A few posters have mentioned how much they liked Penang - what is it that made it your favorite place / special? Thanks! OBT Dolphinyong Jan 19, 13, 2:59 pm Hi, onebagtraveller, sorry for the late reply, pm me next time if I didn't reply. 1. There's no such one day ticket in KL, however, you could purchase a card which you could top-up and use them for the LRT, bus etc. It might be troublesome to take one, but I think you could save some time by using that 'touch and go' card as in you don't have to queue every time you wanna use the LRT. I think Malaysia has one of the cheapest transport system, it costs about 1usd - 3usd two ways, especially if you're in the tourist area of KL. There's a hop-on and off bus which you could consider, it's operated by (semi)-private company though, maybe worth it. http://www.myhoponhopoff.com/ 2. Penang is an interesting city, it's the 'chinese' area in Malaysia, with a lot of interesting spots like the butterfly theme park, the snake temple, Kek Lok Temple (try the 0.30 usd asam laksa just next to the temple, it's known as one of the best in Malaysia). Penang is well-developed, definitely comparable to KL, and with better public security compared to other cities in Malaysia=) I would recommend you to stay for 2 to 3 nights there. Langkawi is the place where the husband could relax by the beach and the wife could have crazy shopping as there's a tax-free shopping area there. If you're not really for the beach, I think 2 nights is just nice. Melaka is the city of culture, with nice food and nice shopping mall. I would recommend one night stay here, as it takes about 4 hours to get from KL to Melaka and back to KL. Thank you for this thread and all of the helpful information! Tioman island or Melaka can be your choice as they are closer to Singapore compared to KL or Langkawi. Tioman island is nice and worth to visit, however, it's having the monsoon season in Feb. You should check the weather before you start your journey to TI. Melaka can be the choice if you don't wanna go to KL. I'm sorry to say that there's not much gay-friendly area in Malaysia as it's a muslim country. However, I don't think you will be ill-treated anywhere in Malaysia though, no worry about that. However, I would suggest you to make at least 2nights or 3nights in Penang. It's an interesting city, with food, shopping, culture etc. Furthermore, if you're driving from KL to Penang, it will take about 5hours. Maybe 3nights is enough for Langkawi, unless you really like the beach very much. May is alright to travel, avoid the school holidays at the end of May though. You can check-out the luxury coach to travel between cities, some other FTer reported that the experience is comparable to 1st class flight=) Taking ferry from Penang to Langkawi would be a nice trip, no worry about that=) Hope it helps and please kindly report back if possible=) Thanks. Dolphinyong Jan 25, 13, 12:25 pm The satay are fine, without nuts I mean. Don't touch the satay sauce though. His knowledge about things Malaysia is quite comprehensive. I recently stayed in KL at the Sheraton. The location was great for me, and it is SPG category 2. Cash and points, great value at RM 106 and 1600 SPG points per night. Definitely the way to go if you have SPG points. Dolphinyong, I wouldn't worry about talking about street crime in this thread. Maybe Malaysia is less safe than Singapore, but I am certain that anyone reading the thread has been to places where being a victim of street crime is an order of magnitude more likely. Dolphinyong Jan 28, 13, 12:13 pm Appreciate your compliment and thanks a lot for emphasis on the safety in Malaysia... Of course, it's not like the risk of your bags being snatched in KL is as high as 50%, but there are cases happen every now and then. And I highlighted this issue because a simple little precaution like not bringing your handbag, or carry your handbag in between you and your partner will certainly reduce the risk significantly. I hope it doesn't stop you guys from traveling to Malaysia=) Regards. Dolphinyong First of all, I think Dolphinyong is doing a great job keeping this thread going. I was wondering why does anyone go to Kota Kinabalu? Is it just for the Tunku Abdul Marine Park? Its the state capital for Sabah; it has the 2nd busiest airport in the country (with international direct flights from many cities) & there are numerous beach resorts & hotels of international standing. Inshort there is better infrastructure to cater for mass tourism in KK. And not forgetting, there is also Kinabalu National Park. mumof2sydney Feb 1, 13, 9:48 pm hi- we have stayed at multiple hotels in golden triangle (so very much miss the regent:()...any suggestions for a good pool and a club level that allows kids in the lounge?? I am a little surprised that no buses from central Singapore (i.e. Queen St. Bus Terminal) call at Kotaraya station in Johor Bahru. They either call at Larkin in JB or they don't stop in central Singapore. Is it possible to disembark the Queen st.-Larkin buses completely at Johor Bahru customs and grab a taxi (or walk) to Kotaraya, or are passengers required to reboard the bus after customs and ride all the way up to Larkin? Dolphinyong Feb 22, 13, 4:48 am Hi, sorry for late reply. If April or May is your only choice, go in May. Monsoon season in Malaysia (Rainy) Northeast part: November-March Southwest part : May-September Rainfall peak in April and October throughout Malaysia. Hope it helps. I am thinking about a vacation on Borneo in 2014. I'd like to go in April or May. But I'd also like to avoid monsoon season. Can you tell me about weather in KK and Malaysian Borneo or point me to a good web site? What would be the ideal month to visit Borneo if you had a choice? I will probably by visiting KK, Kuching, and Sandakan for about 10-12 days total. I won't be going to the Indonesian part or Brunei. Dolphinyong Feb 22, 13, 4:58 am Check out Furama Bukit Bintang. I stayed there twice and I would rate them as one of the hotel having the highest quality/price ratio. It's a 4stars hotel and if you book early enough, you could get the rate of app. 50euro/night including tax. Use some other third party website like booking.com and compare the price to their official website though, I remembered getting cheaper price at booking.com You could buy train tickets in advance. Visit : http://www.ktmb.com.my/ But well, as I have advised other FTers who wanna visit Malaysia, choose bus over train for higher punctuality and higher comfort. The train in Malaysia is totally different form the train in Europe (I experienced both), and the bus in Malaysia definitely will give you a more pleasant experience compared to the buses in Europe. Check out buses like 'five stars tours' : http://www.singaporemalaysiabus.com/five_stars.html By the way, do you travel from Europe to KL? I'm very interested on the 'special fares' that you mentioned, do you mind dropping me a pm about it? Hope it helps. Regards. I jumped in on one of the TK "Special Fares" Biz-Class Fares to Kuala Lumpur. Do you have any suggestion for an hotel in Kuala Lumpur, which is central and clean and costs no more than app. 40 € per night ? Dolphinyong Feb 22, 13, 5:01 am Hi, You can just catch a taxi at Johor Bahru custom, you don't have to reboard the bus all the way to Larkin. Actually there are buses that will only bring you from Queen St to Johor Bahru custom, that would save you a few bucks I think. However, mind that it can be troublesome to get through the custom with luggage, there's stairs etc etc.... Hope it helps. Regards. The switch from the IC to the Hilton was one of the best decisions. No hassle from Sentral with taxis and luggage - just walk over the road to the hotel (Le Meridien is the other one, if you are Starwood oriented) The hotel is nice, as Gold upgrade to exec level with lounge access, etc. Location is excellent, very near everywhere, Central being the focal point of mass transit. The bird park is amazing, even though it was an ad hoc decision to visit, I spent several hours there, even if I'm not a bird-watching person. Petronas towers - just a tip for photographers. Walk across the park to the Traders hotel, up the 33rd floor to the Skybar. They have possibly the best view of the towers - and you can shoot without any safety glass between (!) Chinatown was a big letdown at night, if you are into the "junkets in all quantities in tight spot" kind of shopping, you might enjoy it. Very short first visit to MY but so far I like what I've seen, so will be back. cardesigner2000 Mar 19, 13, 8:03 am Thanks again Dolphinyong for launching and updating the thread^ Have just prepared our 2 week trip to Malaysian Borneo and KL this May. After the high prices of Borneo we will take advantage of the affordable prices in KL to stay at the Shangri La. I was thinking to take a fixed fare taxi from KLIA but am a bit concerned about traffic. Our flight from KK arrives at 15:40 on a Wednesday which might get us into KL at peak traffic time. Is it better to take public transport instead? And how much should the taxi fare to KLIA be? In BKK we always insist on using the meter, but will be our first experience in KL. Thanks a lot. Dolphinyong Mar 20, 13, 7:23 am Hi, Oh dear, Shang-ri-la KL is fantastic and the room rate is sky high, I wish I could stay there at least once in my life time... Just one note about this hotel, the location is the weakpoint I should said. The nearest monarail station is Bukit Nanas, and I have personally walked from Bukit Nanas station to the Shangrila hotel...I would say that it's not an easy walk especially if you have luggage with you. So, in your situation, in order to avoid the super-peak rush which would start around 5pm in KL central area, I would suggest you to take the KLIA express to Kl central then only switch to taxi from there. It's possible to take the Monarail to Bukit Nanas, but you will have to walk with your luggage to the hotel (about 10mins walk, passing the petrol station etc) A taxi from KLIA to your hotel shouldn't cost you more than RM80...Get a metered taxi and ask for the approximate price before you hop in. The journey will take about 1hour, and maybe you could reach the hotel before the rush hour. Another option is the star wira hotel shuttle bus...I'm still waiting for a review for this shuttle bus company though, it will bring you directly from KLIA to Shang ri la...here's the website : http://www.starwira.com/ Every option has it's pros and cons...Do report back if possible so that others will benefit=) Regards. Since we're flying from BKI we should be able to arrive in time to avoid rush hour. I thought there was a coupon system at KLIA or I have the choice to go by meter also? It's by far the nicest lounge We've been to compared to Hilton/SPG/marriott offerings in SE Asia. Very quiet and sophisticated with a great selection of food during high tea 3-5pm and cocktail from 5-7pm. Excellent sashimi, scallops, foie gras, french cheeses, etc. Was upgraded to a suite with a view of the petronas towers. True, there is not much interesting in the direct vicinity of the hotel, but Bukit Nanas monorail is a 5 minute walk away, and we walked from Pavillon using the skywalk to KLCC Traders and then the shangri la one night. Some shady looking bars near the intersection though. Suria KLCC is a 10-15 minute walk. We liked the Lot 10 Hutong food court although it's mainly chinese food and we were looking for more Malay vendors. Overall a great value stay for a true 5 star experience at about $220 a night in a suite with lounge access/ breakfast. We also tried the (pricey) airport pickup where we were met directly at the gate upon our arrival. The SL representative has security clearance so he even assisted us from the gate, to the baggage claim, to the hotel car which has in car wifi. Took an hour from the gate to the hotel where we went directly to our room for check in. A great ending to our 2 week visit to Malaysia. Sabah was really great for wildlife also.
