Star Alliance - Does anyone know when Eva Air becomes an active Star Alliance member? (18 Jun 13)

I saw a press release dated 29 Mar 2012, announcing that Eva Air had been accepted in the Star Alliance. As of today however they are still not listed on the Star Alliance site. Does anyone know when they will be an active member of the Alliance? I am eager to get United Mileage Plus credit for flights I have coming up. Will there be any type of retroactive credit allowed?

According to posts at the end of this thread ...

Sometime in mid-2013.

I would say the clue is in the press release

http://www.staralliance.com/en/press/eva-air-prp/

which contains this:

Since its founding nearly 15 years ago, Star Alliance has progressively built its presence in Asia/Pacific and will have eight member carriers based in this region by mid-2013.

To me that suggests that they are expecting BR to have completed their accession by then.

Over on Sky Team, I was awaiting for China Eastern (MU) to join so I could earn SkyPesos on a attractive fare on MU and earn on DL.

It was about 5 days before MU's joining ST and it looked like fares were going up. I booked my flight, entered my DL Skymiles account number where MU wanted my Eastern Miles account number.

After MU had joined, I called up CSR at MU and gave them my DL Skymiles number (which they already had, but now I was telling them it was a DL FF number, not a MU FF number).

Make a long story short, it worked out.

The only wrinkle was I only got 50% credit, as the fare class rules (posted after I bought my ticket) only provided for 50%, buy it was nice to be able to fly a new airlines and still earn something.

I'm anxious to see this go through. We have family in Taiwan and Eva is usually pretty competitive LAX - TPE.

Asian programs are stinky in giving out miles. It is a known secret.

The trick is how they will align with their new partners.

So?

BR has been a M+ partner for a while (since 3/3).

Beside - the award chart mentions nothing about PQM/PQS.

I don't expect to see that until BR formally joins this summer.

BR staff in Europe told me around June 15th. They seem to be updating all their reservations systems and fares this month.

I have a potential trip to Singapore scheduled for September, and the Premium Economy fares out of YYZ appear quite attractive on Eva. Full J is simply not within the budget, and at 6'4" I've always limited myself to E+ on UA or other extended legroom options.

Has anyone flown Premium Economy with Eva? Is it worth it? Good service?

If BR plans to join within three months, one would think an official announcement should come up any day.

In addition to the comment by their president in their latest newsletter. Which is still somewhat vague.

The date I have been hearing is 6/18.

Here is the link to the announcement in the magazine: http://evaair.themecool.com/eBook_Mall/e-books/enVoyage/032013/index.html#/7/zoomed

I think at this point, it will happen in June for sure. Otherwise, this would be a huge loss of face.

The next question is then what would be the EQM/RDM earning structure when flying BR. I am hoping the discounted Y tix would earn at least 70%. Otherwise, it would be difficult to choose BR over other *A Asian carriers (except for SQ, of course).

Even though US is leaving the Star Alliance, do we think there's a chance of earning miles for flying EVA before US official exits stage left?

Perhaps between June when they join, and before the end of the 3Q when US/AA finalize their merger?

I think you are assuming that US will exit Star immediately. I assume that it will take a few months. No hard information, just my personal speculation.

You may be right. I got the feeling that US was not committed to *A after the UA/CO merger was announced.

The question is if they would still be bothered to sign the agreement with BR knowing they will leave the alliance in a few months.

Similar thing happened with FM when they knew they would leave the alliance shortly but they still went ahead and included JJ in their FFP for a very short period of time.

I wonder how the sequence of events would be. It seems it is to the new AA's benefit for US to move over to OneWorld as soon as it can.

However, it is probably a waste of money and will take too long for US to modify its systems for OneWorld then merge system with AA (assuming they are leaving SHARES for SABRE).

So, it seems the right sequence would be:

1 - some kind of reciprical arrangement (at least elite recognition / status cross-matching) between US and AA - assuming OneWorld and *A allow it
2 - leave *A and merge the systems on the same day (if moving to SABRE)

The DL/NW and UA/CO mergers were both same-alliance merge. This one is going to be interesting.

So, this maybe 1+ year after the corporate merger.

Frankly, I think *A will be foolish to kick US out if US does not choose to leave early. There is no way UA can plug all the holes in the network left behind by US.

Thank you for the news, finally some confirmation

Question is now whether I book YYZ-TPE NOW, or wait after April 21
does it make a difference? I'm *A Gold

My hope was to redeem only 75000 Aeroplan for Y round-trip ticket with low YQ :D

If it is paid fare, I don't think it makes a difference. The most you might have to do is to call EVA to remove your *A Gold number and add it back in after 6/18 for it to recognize you are *A Gold.

I don't think *A benefits kick in until 6/18 so you are out of luck (and can only credit to UA as non-PQM) if you fly before then.

Here is a better formatted version: http://www.abacus.com.tw/abacus_2004/news/airlineDetail_for_new_abacus.jsp?contentnbr=9417&headlinenbr=9328 where it is easier to look at how the classes will change.

Note that Y currently books into Elite but later it is only to Economy. So, I wonder if any of the Elite classes will be bookable with other airlines.

I'm a Krisflyer (partner of Star Alliance) member and have just bought my first EVA ticket for Jul 16 departure.

Considering Eva will join Star Alliance mid June, does anyone know if at that time I'll be able to:
1) add these miles to my Krisflyer account, maybe retroactively
2) use my existing miles to upgrade this EVA flight?

Thanks for help!

Similar situation here. We bought discounted business for end of July. Presumably should yield the customary 100 to 125% of the miles?

If they do an LH P thing (now gone) we'll cancel and pay the fee.

Theoretically, you can do it already on UA (and probably CA, NH and OZ since they are already partners). Something seems to be messed up with the system so UA seems to be having problems since mid March (when EVA moved to Amadeus).
