Total of 180272 Miles in 6 months

Background:
This trip was a mix of a mileage run and a fun weekend visit to Jordan and Egypt. I tried not to do too much of a real mileage run (immediate turn around, mostly domestic US) because I thought “what’s the point?” It would be nice to have a short trip with a low cpm and you get to visit some place you’ve never been. I got use to having a short trip and can manage to see things as much as I can over a long weekend. While you get upgrades on Domestic Runs, I would rather see new places, as long as the cpm is low.
Since TK introduced the daily flight to LAX, there was a fare war between airlines on the route. I snapped this trip for only $575 (to Istanbul), bought directly from UA site. Then transfer UA miles to CO for award flights for a short trip to Cairo (with a 23 hrs stop-over in Amman). CO did not have MPM rules like UA did, so I was able to fly CAI-ZRH-CPH-IST for an award from CAI to IST and get to try LX J seat. This report has lots of Economy in it, so I would try to fast forward to the Business Class portion of the trip.

1. SEA-LAX (Jan 25, 2012) AS454 B737-700 (Economy: 7A)
Just another Alaska position flight in Y, credited to AA account. I’ve never flown this route using737-700 before. The flight time was 2.10 hrs.
LA before landing (clear day!):

2. LAX-SFO (Jan 25, 2012) UA239 A319-100 [N450UA] (Economy plus: 7A)
OK it was A319 (8 seats in F), even GS sat in coach! Bad bad! The flight time was 1 hrs.

3. SFO-FRA (Jan 25, 2012) UA900 B747-400 [N107UA] (Economy plus: 20K)
The service on the flight was a norm for UA. Flight time was 10.15 hrs. Lunch was served about an hour into the flight. I took chicken with rice. Then a very light breakfast was served an hour and a half before landing.
Taxi through beautiful birds!

Upon arrival in Frankfurt, I went right to LH Senator Lounge at concourse B and took a shower. There were some choice of snack and salad offering in the Lounge. It was nicer than Business class Lounge but still miles behind FCL or FCT.

4. FRA-IST (Jan 26, 2012) TK1588 A321-100 [TC-JMK] (Economy: 17A)
Turkish had many different version of A321, some had European style short-haul Business seats (Economy seats with middle seats blocked), but some had seats like US Domestic First. This plane had the later. Flight time was 2.40 hrs. The food offering in Y class was nice. I opted for Beef with Rice (the other choice was also rice, yay!). After flying over 10 flights with TK, I noticed that they served food and asked what you wanna drink right away (from the same cart), row by row, which made the service slow while most other carriers would delivered the food first then had another cart come slightly after to serve drinks.

Once I arrived back in IST, I went to TK Lounge. I had been to this Lounge once before and loved it. There were so many choices of food offering: many hot food, pizza, salad, etc. The cook made some hot food right there and was fresh. Even for dessert, sometimes, they ran around with the dessert carts and offered you nice choices right by the couch you sat. There was a masseur walked around to massage your neck upon request as well.

5. IST-AMM (Jan 26, 2012) TK812 A321-100 (Economy: 19C)
Same as the previous flight, both choices for dinner had rice (good for me), I started to like Turkish food more and more. Again the food service was slow. Flight time was 1.55 hrs and we landed on-time around 9.30pm in Amman.
Half an hour after we landed, I got my rental car and start driving to Petra and arrived at my hotel at 12.30am. Next morning, I spent the half of the day exploring Petra: the Treasury, Monastery, etc., and start driving back to Amman in the afternoon.
Some pics from Petra:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/7075/7350577372_eeb9ea6d3f_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/boeing747-8/7350577372/)

From some trip reports I read on FT prior to the trip, there were many travelers experienced some Jordanians tried to get a free ride in your car. That also happened to me, so I was not surprised and ended up took 3 passengers in my car on the way back to Amman.
Upon my arrival in AMM, the check-in went through in a minute and I proceed to the RJ Lounge. There were a few choices of middle eastern snacks offering. It was just an average lounge to me.

6. AMM-CAI (Jan 27, 2012) MS702 A320-200 (Economy: 21A)
I was so tired from the time change and driving to and back from Petra, so I was knocked out until we were in the air and some snack (ham, cheese, tomatoes, and cucumber) was served. After the meal, I slept again and woke up when we docked at the gate in Cairo.
The ride to Cairo was hmmm interesting, I had never seen something like that, not even in India. For the hotel I used AA miles to pay. As an EXP, the miles required for booking divided in half! Hence I paid only 5400 miles for 2-night hotel included breakfast. The same hotel would require 15000 miles per night if booked through United. I spent the next 2 days at the Pyramids, Egypt Museum, old town market, and a few mosques. Also get to try street food.

7. CAI-ZRH (Jan 29, 2012) LX237 A340-300 [HB-JMF] (Business: 5K)
I got to the airport pretty early. There were 4 lounges. All ran by MS but had the same facilities. The food offering in the lounge was better than RJ in Amman. There were sandwiches, a few choices of soup, some Asian meals: Fried rice, Spring rolls, etc. I spent a few hours catch up on work and headed to the gate 30 minutes before the departure time.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/7078/7165365071_9b7615275a_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/boeing747-8/7165365071/)

Once on the plane, I was directed to my seat 5K which was part of the mini-cabin behind First class. Only 4 passengers were seated in this section, me included. The pre-departure drinks, Menu, and amenity kit were handed. From the first impression, I could say I kinda like the design of the seat. The Business seats were lie-flat horizontal. It was the same type of those on NH 77W, EK 380, EY 345/6, but the arrangement was a bit different. I liked the wooden texture of the personal table.

After the meal, I took a nap for about 2 hours. Flight time was 3.45 hrs. After we landed, I went through the immigration and right back at the Swiss Senator Lounge. The Lounge was so packed because there were a few long-haul departures at the same time.

8. ZRH-CPH (Jan 29, 2012) SK610 MD-82 [SE-DIL] (Business: 1A)
When I scanned my boarding pass, an error msg showed up again. They changed my seat from 2A to 1A. Why? I really did not like bulkhead row because I was tall and it had limited legroom. The seats on intra-Europe J class were just an economy seat, in this case, not even block the middle seat! However, the port side only had A and B.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/7086/7165433333_c1170186cf_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/80033291@N03/7165433333/)

The food service was great for a short flight. I liked the pear Salad. Flight time was 90 minutes.
After we landed, I spent a few hours at SAS Lounge. It was suppose to be a flagship lounge. It was big and had some snacks and various drinks offering. However, I was not impressed. The Lounge closed a while before my flight departure time. There were only 2 late night departures, both were 2 carriers that flew to Istanbul.

9. CPH-IST (Jan 30, 2012) TK1788 A319-100 [TC-JLZ] (Business: 2A)
I was the only passenger in J cabin. The seat was a European Business seat (Economy seat with middle seat blocked and a bit better pitch) so I pushed the blocking tray up and slept the long way across three seats. The breakfast was served once we took off. They managed to have 2 courses even it was a late night flight. Flight time was only 2.55 hrs so I did not sleep much.
Pic of the appetizer, the main course was not that much better:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/7093/7165433257_3a1e2faba3_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/80033291@N03/7165433257/)
We landed in a snowy Istanbul weather. I saw some delays and cancellation on the screen but I bet that Istanbul airports deal with snow pretty well. I went right to TK Lounge again, took shower and had some breakfast

10. IST-ZRH (Jan 30, 2012) TK1907 A321-100 [TC-JRI] (Economy: 24A)
We spent sometimes de-icing the wings but arrived on time. Flight time was 2.25 hrs. The breakfast served on the plane was just egg stuffs. I arrived in Zurich for the second time in 12 hours! I did not have to go through immigration this time. We docked in E concourse and I just walked right up to the United gate.

11. ZRH-IAD (Jan 30, 2012) UA937 B767-300ER [N647UA] (Economy plus: 20K)
Another average UA flight in Y+. I prepared to sit in coach! Flight time was 9.10 hrs and I got to catch some sleep and woke up just an hour before we landed in DC.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/7090/7165433221_effd40cfa2_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/80033291@N03/7165433221/)

12. IAD-LAX (Jan 30, 2012) UA951 B757-200 (Economy plus: 9A)
Again, this time it was not A319, it was because of the new United, GS and 1K have to sit in coach? Well it maybe because of hub to hub, so the upgrades were difficult. Once we landed in LA, I took the bus to terminal 3 to get on Alaska. What a long journey. I flew 7 flights to get from Cairo to Seattle!

13. LAX-SEA (Jan 30, 2012) AS245 B737-800 (Economy: 8A)
We landed almost midnight in Seattle, it had been 45 hours since the time I arrived at the airport in Cairo til I arrived at home….

Conclusion
This trip was a mileage run where the cpm was at 3.85. Spending some United miles (15k+22.5k), I got to see2 new countries I hadn’t been before and fly LX Business class. Spending AA miles (5.4k), as EXP, I got 2 nights hotel in Cairo and breakfasts. In addition to that I spent less than $70 for a car rental and hotel in Petra.
United: Just another average UA experience. Upgrades seem to get harder on some routes (with the new UA)
Turkish: I like their meal service, it seems to be better than other carriers, especially in Y. The Lounge was amazing. The Lounge alone made me wanna connect in Istanbul. First thing they need to improve was: they need to announce during the boarding process that the overhead bins are sharing spaces and passengers should only put the bigger carry-on bag in first and wait until everybody get on board, and then put the smaller items… The boarding process and the meal service were slower than average.
Egypt Air: My experience was too short to say.
Swiss: Swiss Business class was a good experience. The food and the service were great (but still behind SQ, CX). I really like to try their First class, which I was initially booked on YUL-ZRH in F later this year (2012), but they canceled my flight, after searching the entire calendar for LX long haul service, it seems like LX no longer gives out First class award seats to Star Alliance partners. What a shame.
SAS: This was only my second experience with them. Still need to try their long haul product.

Great report and thanks for sharing. I'm tempted to do a trip to either Jordan or Egypt at the end of the year but the situation in Egypt seems too volatile.

I enjoyed looking at the sampling of different carriers and I agree with you that TK's service is a bit "slow" and a bit inconsistent from other reports that I have read. On my MAD-IST flight I did not get a drink until later after the meal was placed on my tray. Agree that the TK CIP Lounge in IST is excellent for being a business lounge and the food selection pretty extensive.

I cannot agree more krub that The Istanbul Lounge is definitely among the best in the entire *A network, though it can get crowded at times. I was there twice in December and in January and was very impressed. The shower room was definitely something to write home about. On another note, Petra looks amazing! I would like to go there some day. Is it hard to get there krub? How long do you need there?

Wow, you are on a tear with these TRs! Another great one! Very jealous of all your traveling ...

Great pics of the IST lounge ... I really need to route through there on *A now that I'm *G (TK Elite, at that!).

Thank you :) Actually there are still thousands of tourists in Egypt, more than you could imagine. I think the indicator that the places are safe to travel to is whether there are still regular flights operating to the country/city. Like in Thailand (where I am originally from) sometimes we had the political issue that scared people from traveling there, but it was actually one spot (in a size of football field), that if you don't go to the spot (most locals and tourists know the location of the spot), then it was 100% safe. I can't say that about Cairo, but from talking to the locals, I think it's not that much different.

Most people would wanna spend few days there.. but in my case it was just a connecting point on a one-way award ticket so it has to be less than 24 hours. For me, If I had more time I would go to dead sea and see Amman more. I only had 23 hours so I saw most of Petra and the rest of the time was on the road.

About TK Lounge, I actually like the fact that they have rice (I'm not super easy with eating Western food) and grilled beef and chicken, it was nice.

I know, after flying that many flights over a weekend, I felt like I was good for a few weeks lol

Great report, enjoyed it very much!

The SWISS Business Class looked fantastic as always, flew it around the same time as you did although on a longer flight from PVG, and I absolutely loved it. Had the same seat also, and the mini cabin is indeed private hence the galley not being bothersome at all (something which I had feared before)

The food on the CAI route looks a bit different though from the standard long haul offerings. At least the looks of the main course which looked more like a slightly enhanced Y Class portion. But sufficient for a 3:45hr flight I guess.

About the SAS flight, the seat change may have been due to a last minute aircraft change. Happened to me also, had 2F on the B736 and was moved to 1A on the MD-80, bulkhead is very cramped! Slightly surprised to hear your opinion on the SAS Lounge. To me it's one of the best lounges I've visited, absolutely love that place. Was the top-floor i.e *G section closed that evening? The ground floor Business Lounge is not that nice I'd say.

Nice report, thanks !

I had not considered a rental car for Amman-Petra.
Looks like $70-100 per day. Maybe you used points !!

I took car/driver from Border near Eilat to Petra,
and then again from Petra to Allenby Crossing for Jerusalem.

Could you give me the link to your report? I wanna see the Business class meal offering for long haul.

SAS flight they did not change the aircraft last minute, so I did not know why they changed my seat. About the Lounge in CPH, I did go upstairs. It was nice. There weren't many attendants there since it was quite late (after BKK flight departed). I was just pretty much compare with TK Lounge on the same trip and I liked TK one a bit better :)

I actually like both CPH and ARN as airports in general though.

Nice report, thanks !

It spent only $35 for a 1 day car rental. Not bad right?

Also, I couldn't remember how much exactly I had paid for the ticket. It was probably around $400 range. The prices in Costa Rica were higher than what I had excepted, mostly due to the country's popularity among Americans.

Sorry but I had posted the previous comment about your question from the Costa Rica thread in this one instead. Yes, I agree that the rice at TK Lounge in IST was nice to see. I was there with a Chinese friend of mine and he said the rice is exactly like what people in Western China (mostly of Uyghur heritage) eat. The grilled chicken was very good and the cakes from my favorite Demel shop in Vienna were just amazing too.

Wow, the main course looked much better than what I had. My flight times was more than 3.30 hrs, they should cater the same level of main course.

And the second meal on your report looked quite pitiful as you described. The flight was long enough to have a good big 2 meals
