Date: July 27, 2012 (Friday! good friday! good weekend!)
Many of us are staying for the weekend as well. There would be additional activities
Why Seattle?
This DO is dedicated to the Delta Seattle Customer Service Team that would close out on August 31. :( The wonderful people are relocating to new functions, new service centers, and/or retire from Delta Airlines. This center has served the road warriors for more than 20 years, and some go back with the center to the days of Republic. We stand at the right side of right and are comming in to say thank you in person. Remember- many of them would keep serving us, especially elite pax, in other centers (would not it be nice to hear familiar voice next time you call?
DLroads

So, what's in the activities?
First things first--
(a) Food- Yes! the best of Seattle, including top pot doughnuts to all center employees. After hours unofficial happy hour is in the works.
(b) Thank you cards- Yes! a personalized thank you card for each staff members, including ones in Japanese, Korean and Mandarin/Cantonese. No one is left behind, come and sign! We have plenty of excellent people and we have to thank them all in person
(c) You walk the walk, but can you talk the talk? ;) YES! the big question to be tested--Can you handle clients as demanding as YOU? For the first time in the DO's history, you will have the opprotunity to try your best taking calls and helping clients at the CS center (with the help of an agent, of course). Let's see how good can YOU be in helping other customers. Think you know it all? bring it on!
Even Richard Anderson found it to be hard... let's see how well can do it.
(d) Q&A with the center director and supervisors on CS, elite clients, and what it takes to help you 'get there' (wherever there is...)
(e) Door prizes? Yes there are.
(f) Airport tour- in the works
More? more to follow, but there would be some 'official' and some 'non official' activities. As always, participation is at your own risk. What happens at the DO stays at the DO. We are not judging anyone... ;)
The hotel-
We do not have at this time an official hotel for the group. First, we have a microsoft conference in Seattle the same week. These are additional 5,000+ people that take a lot of space... Second- we learned that flyertalkers like to book their own hotels for points/miles/both. We do want you to know that the SEA CS center is located near the airport. However, the public transportation is exteremly efficient. So, downtown or anywhere you stay is good. Many are planning to stay at nearby location. Details will follow.
Airfare discounts for the event-
Yes, we can! we have discount fares with AF/KL and with DL.

Either one is fine. As long as you come and enjoy. The company is what counts... :)
How much is it and how do we pay?
The registration fee (which I need to post) is $30. We use the funds to cover the personalized greeting cards, the name tags and the catering for the thank you event (Coffee, top pot doughnuts for 200 people, etc.). The payment is through paypal. Canarsie serves as my second opinion and advisor on all expenses.
Some people requested to donate to the event (THANK YOU!) even though they can't attend. The paypal account is searocks2012@gmail.com, but if needed- you can also PM me for delivery address for checks. You can add more if you wish. 110% of the funds go to the event expenses. Yes, even I pay the registration fee :-)
We already covered some of the basic expenses using the DLroads foundation account (in other words, I took the 'hit' on few basics to get things running... and to ensure we all meet and party!)
We will have 'unofficial' add ons, most likely. For example, we may have an 'after party' reception for employees and visitors in a bar/etc. In that case, we would like to try and make sure that employees that come get their first drink on us. We will see how to work it out.
(Note: Within the CS center offices, we are not allowed, and explicitly required not to bring alcoholic beverages. We are allowed, and 'explicitly' required to bring sweets...Photos are generally allowed- there is even a 'photo op' wall, but there may be certain areas in which we will be requested not to take pictures)

1. I just sent the registration fee.
2. I do not drink coffee. Is Coca-Cola available?
3. What are "top pot doughnuts"?
4. 200 people??? How many work in that office?
5. Canarsie? CANARSIE? Nobody asks Canarsie's opinion about anything ever since the day in Venice when he gave a group of FTers his opinion about how to get to the train station and they wound up wandering for hours through the back alleys totally lost.

You were updated :-)
2. I do not drink coffee. Is Coca-Cola available?
It will be. I guess you are a true ATL person ;) Other healthy and less healthy drinks would also be available. Again, no alcoholic beverages within the office.
3. What are "top pot doughnuts"?
Aside from being the most popular type of donuts in Seattle, and the best donuts in the world?!
Read about it more here:
http://www.toppotdoughnuts.com/
They have more than 40 seasonally changing doughnuts, on top of regular (year round) ones. The best of the best. Be careful, you can't have just one... you'll get addicted!
4. 200 people??? How many work in that office?
Without giving specific 100% accurate number, you are looking at approx. the number+ visitors. There is some random 'noise' around the number.
Canarsie knows Seattle very well and knows Delta very well. On top of that, I am greatful he helps me with his experience managing large groups of flyertalkers away from their home base(s), and manage an on-(tight)budget event. [This event is not subsidized].

...if it were not for that darn canal that was in the way without a bridge, though...I, who was a primary victim of that miscalculation, have long forgiven Canarsie although I cannot deny that I was quite p*ssed at him when that short walk to the RR station was diverted by a 20 minute detour. :)
But all was well that ended well since we made the train, albeit just by the skin of our teeth. The incident has now passed into history as one of the great FlyerTalk legends that only comes up now and again when the parties who were involved are lifting their glasses together.

List of participants update (as of 6/11/2012, 12:30pm)
We are considering adding a wine mini-DO on Saturday, 7/28 (aiming at the afternoon/evening).
We added a Saturday night dinner, please see post #17 in this thread
At the moment, it seems we have two 'main' interest groups for Saturday (Day time)-
A visit at Boeing, and a Seattle tour. Given sufficient # in both, we can probably even arrange both. But, I need some better headcount for each potential event (e.g. two groups in the morning and gathering in the late afternoon)

Sat (7/28/2012) night dinner plans are:
We have a reservation for 10 or more at 7PM at Purple in Woodinville. We can, and we are expecting to extend the group
Please see here for directions and map from google maps:
Thank you monitor for doing the 'admin' work to set us there.
So, you can explore the menu here: http://www.thepurplecafe.com/menus.html
Cost:
If we will take a private room, there is a minimum of $500 to the group. But that's ok, we don't need a private room. They know who we are...
The rules are that there will be one check with an 18% grat. No separate checks. I am willing to put my card in, and we can set the pay later (cash, paypal or otherwise).

Saturday dinner time seems to be present but Friday's is absent, at least to my eyes. Reason for asking is not all of us believe in flying to SEA since it takes only slightly longer to drive up considering time to airport, check in, negotiating the thousands standing around, waiting to board, and getting off, getting the rental and all the other nonsense.
Please point my eyes in the correct direction for location and time.

We are not 100% certain because of the airport trip scheduling attempt. We are expecting the thank you 'donuts and coffee' to be at 11:30am or so (again, flex.) We will have the Q&A, and the 'join a call' scheduled around that. Then, our goal is to align that with the airport tour.
I will make sure to PM you as soon as I get the info.
I will add you already to the Sat. night dinner list, and I am considering you in for the thank you event. Being at the right side of right is right! (I need a new expression, though...)

DLroads has mentioned that there will be door prizes awarded to lucky attendees. Knowing that I am never lucky, I realized that in order to participate I would have to bring a door prize instead of relying on being able to take one home.
A couple of years ago, I found the ultimate FlyerTalker door prize and brought it to a meet..
(Well, not the ultimate one. It is not a lifetime free FC ticket good on any airline at any time.)
It was the first one selected and remained on the table for only a few minutes, so I decided to get another and went out to buy it today for the SEA Do.
What does a FTer need and want?
1. Credit cards. After all, there is no reason to pay cash when you get points and miles for using plastic.
2. His own hotel -- or, even better, a chain of them.
3. Millions of dollars.
4. A computer.
5. His own airplane.
What problem does every FTer face? Finding himself in a place where he can't understand the language. (I run into that when my plane lands at ATL.)
Well, this door prize not only gives you the five things you want but also the problem that you face!
It is the Hebrew edition of Monopoly. Not just Monopoly, but the credit card version. If you don't have fun with it, I'm sure you know some kids who will.
There is no cash. Instead, you enter your credit card (there are six provided with the game) into the computer. It either debits or credits you, as necessary, and if you have to pay somebody for landing on his property, it transfers the money from your card to his. But don't worry -- you will have a lot of it. Each player starts with 15 million shekels ($3.84 million).
The airplane, of course, is one of the tokens which you move around the board.
The problem, obviously, is that it is all written in Hebrew. But even that is not insurmountable. To start with, everybody knows Monopoly well enough so that he doesn't have to read the property cards. All he has to do is align the colors and writing with what appears on the board.
More than that, if you want, we can open the game at the Meet and I can give you all the street names and you can write them on the property cards. We can do the same with the Chance and Community Chest cards.

We are presently planning to come up Friday providing the start time allows travel via I-5 from PDX. That is opushomes and MarshaB plus a commitment from 2 other PDX Flyertalk members who have not yet made hotel reservations.
Reservations, cancelable are in place for Friday and Saturday nights at either the Sheraton Bellevue, $129 ++ Club Floor/night (AAA rate) or Hilton Garden Inn Issaquah (25000 HHonors points + $89 for the entire stay). Unfortunately, until the Friday schedule is firm, we cannot make a firm commitment.
We can provide 1,092.000 and 673,000 lifetime MQMs to your quest to a cumulative 15mm.

Again, don't go over budget (!). Many door prizes are in the single-digit range. But, they are valuable to people who enjoy the joy of travel, and also arrive from our visitors to other visitors and employees
Thank you all from the Narita Airport lounge (where I originally wrote it--now, doing few edits in the humid, hot, NY, and also copying it to the community buzz). Big big BIG thank you to Canarsie who watched the emails / questions while I've been out. Technically, I am still out until Monday morning, but I will attempt to watch emails/notes today (Started doing it now). On a side note, it's been a long ride, with five different flights(not all DL) in two weeks. I found out more about the good, bad and ugly of IRROPS. Special thanks to JFK GA A. who did everything possible to get it right when others just 'pulled' when things got messed and service melted. You are the reason I fly Delta.

I'm in, arriving late Thu from JFK. I'll stay near the airport Thu night rather than go back and forth to Bellevue, but will pick up a car Fri after the airport events and transfer to the Sheraton Bellevue for Fri/Sat nights. (Missed the $125 AAA rate, but got the birthyear promo which works out to be about the same.) Flying out on AS Sunday noon. Happy to provide carpool services to whoever needs.
I'm in for dinner and most likely whatever other events get scheduled on Saturday.Excellent! See you there.

Ok, no idea how I missed this thread. Maybe I don't follow the DL boards that much anymore?
EDIT: Just realized why I never saw this thread. Who the hel* put this in "Community Buzz" when this is specific to Delta? I don't read anything but Delta/United/Mileage Run.
Anyway, I'm local and should be in town on Friday the 27th so count me in if you have space. Can someone PM me if there's space?
I can make Friday and maybe Saturday morning but I'm out for Sat aftn/evening. I'll actually be running in the SeaFair TorchLight 5K/8K.
BTW, someone should have made the Saturday night reservation at Purple in Seattle. The TorchLight parade is quite the spectacle and not too far from Purple. :)
Looking forward to a PM...
Thanks,

A last minute schedule change and I'm out. :(
I will be arriving in SEA Saturday, if anyone's still around.
DLroads
Jul 21, 12, 10:14 am
Good morning all from the quiet NY,
Sitting here with my cup of coffee, and thinking of the to-do list for the 7/27.
(a) Happy visitors,checked? CHECKED
(b) Thank you cards, checked? IN THE PRINT, consider it checked
(c) Donughts, checked? CHECKED,
(d) some door presents, checked? CHECKED, please bring more,
(e) Early arrival gathering? (see below, we need a count)
We are planning for an early arrival 'reception' on Thursday, with few people from the center that would join as well. We are still thinking whether to go with the SC, or somewhere else. I need to know how many people are planning to attend (it's a tent. early evening one, so afterwards groups can spread out for other plans, friends' meeting, go to the town, etc. I'd be available to help out, and so would few locals- THANK YOU locals for your help :) )
(f) Friday plans checked? Almost checked
We have the tours almost set, the center events set, and the evening gathering set.
(g) Final headcount, checked? well, we need to work it out
(h) Sat. morning winery tour-- see below.
We have a 7:00pm dinner. (We have only 9 that confirmed so far)Now, for the rest of the day, we have a group that organized for a small winery tour, for which we need a final headcount (we have 8 that confirmed so far), see below
We have the option to add
Library of Chateau Ste. Michelle for about 1030+/- in the morning (AM),
[for the benefit of those who have not been there and see CSM as a purveyor of modest industrial wines, they also have a very broad range of first-rate products that rival some of the best wines in the world.] , please note that this space has a limited capacity (twelve), so we need a headcount (seven confirmed here)
The rest of the schedule for the winery tour seems to be as follows:
11:30-12:45 JM Cellars (confirmed for 16 people)
12:45-2:00 Columbia lunch (confirmed for 16 people)
2:00-3:30 Brian Carter (confirmed for 16 people)
3:30-5:00 Airfield (not confirmed)
5:00-6:45 Bookwalter
(Thank you all for working on the winery tour schedule)
(h) Sat. morning tour to Boeing:
I had a request to organize a group for a tour to Boeing. If there is still an interest in such tour, please let me know so I can work out some details. So far, I have only 2 people who specified an interest (I thought it may raise greater interest, but I guess many have been there before).
(I) FLIGHT PLANS: Please let me know ASAP if your flight plans are changing/has changed/reassigned, etc. We have people watching those flights very closely, and it is very important for us to make sure all arrive. The center people are VERY happy that we arrive.
(J) Languages:
Japanese? Check, Mandarin? Check, French? Check, Spanish? Check, Hebrew? Check, Korean- I am missing a korean speaker, and... maybe... Engish?
(K) Downtown tour of seattle:
I know that there were plans for downtown tour of seattle for Sat. by few, and I am not sure where it stands. Please note some events in Seattle area for the weekend, that are likely to make the downtown area slightly 'jammed' (but still workable). Locals- please advise.
(L) Locals/others with car(s): If you have a car/motorcycle/bicycle/plane;)/other available to share transportation during the event, please let me know at searocks2012@gmail.com
We are trying to make sure that no one is left behind... we have so far 2-3 confirmed means of transportation, but it would be of great help if you can give a ride (even if only on one of the days) to few visitors. Thank you, thank you, thank you :) Hi, I will even give you a 'have one on us' certificate...
(M) JWD(!)- Job Well Done Certificates, or just a little bit below, can be just a little bit above,
You know, as the center is closing some employees may be just few points short of an award/present in the JWD award store (when you give an employee a JWD certificate, it carries certain point value. For 10K or 11K, I don't remember exactly, they can get a gift card, etc.). Some employees may be just at 9,000 when they need one more for award redeem. I encourage you all to consider bringing in a JWD and helping bridge the 'near goal' ones. Hi, even if you are not coming to the event, you can send a JWD in for this purpose. Thank you for the consideration.
(N) what's your lifetime MQM? (million miler status?) Our goal is to have 15 million MQM on the spot. We are near target. I want to make sure we summarize that and have this info available. It's just to make sure that people are aware of the FT community 'market'. We stand for long time, we stand where it counts, we stand for what's right. and right is to say thank you to the people who watch our travel needs (even if my research fellows think I am nearly insane for flying in with 25 other people just to say thank you...you know that's the right thing to do, because you all do the same:D)
So, let's get the last weekend before the 7/27 THANK YOU DO rolling, so we can get to Seattle and have a great opprotunity to say THANK YOU to our DL SEA CS pepole. That's standing on the right side of right.
Enjoy the day,
DLroads

A JWD is a 'job well done' certificate. You should have received few of them with the platinum/diamond package at the beginning of the year. Each of them worth certain number of points posted on them (usually a 1,000 or 1,500 points). Those certificates are ones that medallion members can provide employees with for outstanding service/help, etc. The points allow employees to redeem presents of different kinds at a dedicated internal website. When you send a 'thank you' email to an employee (or a letter) the employee may also get them to the supervisor and sometimes they will receive points for that.
Now, it would be frustrating if an employee worked hard, has 10,000 points and the present s/he wants is 11,000 (and the center closes). Therefore, the goal is to try and have few of those certificates available so that we can ask around: 'anymore missing 1,000 points for a present?' and then say 'not anymore'...
I have a nice Barbaresco available that I am considering opening. Been waiting for few years now.

Your presence is the most important thing!
I have here a nice 1997 barbaresco that has been waiting for few years to be opened (will post a picture later). Detailed discussion of barbaresco in wiki is here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbaresco
I got this specific one as a graduate student (has an interesting story for that bottle) in Roma, in early 2007. A very interesting trip, can't believe it's been five years already since, (including the fact that I destroyd the I had a 2004 and 2001 bottles as well. Those are gone, and I kept the 1997. Still waiting to open it. Not tonight, though- we are having thai food. Felt like some spicy

Yeah, I know. Thanks.
But the problem w/ that thread is it was started a while ago so most people (or maybe just me) thought it was a never-ending discussion about them closing the reservation centers. Only out of boredom or dumb luck did I look at that thread again after several weeks to see why it was still going. There may have been higher attendance. Just sayin'....

Keep in mind that I am old and senile. I don't even remember 2010, much less who I met then.
(d) some door presents, checked? CHECKED, please bring more,
I have been guilty of a misunderstanding here. When DLroads said "door presents" I thought he meant a present for each woman who walks through my hotel room door. I may be old, as mentioned above, but that is one of the requirements to be a Dirty Old Man.
Hence, today I went out and bought 10 varied Israeli t-shirts as door prizes, hoping to lure 10 women to my room. DLRoads then corrected me and explained that they will be awarded at an open ceremony and -- gasp! -- even men will be eligible.
(I am still holding out for at least giving them to drunken women at Ernie's and hold a wet t-shirt contest.)
As Israeli sizes tend to be somewhat smaller than American, I got only Large and X-Large shirts. A very tiny woman, of course, can take an XL and wear it as a nightgown.
These t-shirts also have the extra added advantage of offering you some excitement in your life if you wear them to an Arab restaurant.
The following t-shirts will be offered:
"Israeli Defense Forces Intelligence. My job is so secret I don't even know what I'm doing". Brown, L.
"Tel Aviv University". Grey, XL
"Israeli Police". Black, L.
"Uzi Does It" Dark Grey, L.
"Mossad -- Israel Secret Intelligence" Grey, L
"America, Don't Worry. Israel is behind you". Brown, L
"Hebrew University, Jerusalem". Light grey, L
"Maccabbee Beer". Black, L.
"Coca-Cola" (written in Hebrew). Red, XL
"Israeli Defense Forces". Brown, XL.

I almost spill the limonana*** through my nose! (and I lived in Israel for a while). You are the Dovster, indeed
***[For those who haven't been in that part of the world- Limonana is a cold lemon drink with mint (nana, read as "na-a-na"). Good for the hot summer days]
Thank you Dovster (and all) for brining in door prizes, presents, etc.
On my list- some key chains (different countries I've been in/through this year), small vintage pins, HOOU's (to build NRSA comfort packets for the continental flights...), some small things from the far east, some things from the middle east, and few more small/medium 'stuff'. Should be fun!
Going back to do the thing I was suppose to do two weeks ago- reorganizing the living room... I am suppose to install a TV here (so I've been told, just ordered one) so that we can watch the olympics in comfort. Been five years since I had one (or more even). Need to call the cables as well to get it done

Who gets what will not be my decision. DLRoads will most likely work out a way to decide.
At past Meets that I organized, everybody's name was put into a hat, all the prizes were put on a table, and the first person chosen was given his choice of anything on the table, the second person had one less prize to choose from, down the line until there was only one item left for the last person.
