Travel Technology - Lowtech $6 solution for smartphone charging problem
Great design deserves to be recognized.
I found the Bobino Driinn phone holder in the giftshop at the Post & Tele Museum in Copenhagen and fell in love with the simplicity of this piece of rubber and plastic.
A picture of it in use in my hotel room (the day I bought it) is below.
I also wrote a review in Frequent Business Traveler (http://www.frequentbusinesstraveler.com/2012/06/bobino-driinn-phone-holder-review/) with a somewhat more detailed explanation.

Does using the soap bottle result in a cleaner mobile after charging? ;)

No, it cleans obscene ubsolcited SMS that come during the night.
I think bot the solutions are for people who are extremely organised. If I can't place my cell phone on an bedside table, a dresser or a desk, I place a magazine on the floor and place my cellphone on it.

I don't think I would go for #1. With no sides, it is a broken phone waiting to happen with the slightest bump.

On the other hand, I imagine it folds flat for compactness when traveling.

Seen also at Tchibo (German retail co.) in each of past couple of years. Not red though.

There is a no-skid pad for starters (on the folding model) plus most outlets are somewhat close to the floor. I see the value in this as keeping the device off the floor, where it is far more likely to be stepped on.

I love this idea. But instead of doing it with an old lotion bottle, how about using a foam rubber can "coozie"? It would fold down very nicely for packing purposes.
