Iberia Airlines Iberia Plus - Oneworld Sapphire Upgrades

I'm sure this has been asked many times and I'm so sorry to the mods in advance. I'm AA Plat traveling on IB ORD-MAD next month. Just got off the phone with IB agent that told me that at day of departure pending availability, the gate agent would give me a complimentary upgrade to Business Class as a OW Sapphire. This sounds a little fishy as AA does nothing like this for IB gold. Thank you in advance.

My wife and I benefited from this about a year and a half ago on a MAD-JFK flight. At the time I was AA PLT. Received a comp upgrade to Business Class on last leg of FCO-MAD-JFK flight without even asking. I have mixed feelings about Iberia's operation, however, the seats/service/flight was excellent.

Iberia is relatively generous with operational upgrades for oneworld elite members. I think it can pay to approach the Ticket and Gate Agents if not offered and 1) be nice, 2) be very nice, and 3) inquire.

Wish I had seen this before. Just flew JFK-MAD and MAD-ORD in Y, and both were absolutely miserable experiences.

I'm AA PLT and didn't even a piece of candy from any of the 3-4 agents I interacted with. Guess I should have just asked?
