The procedures described are pretty much the norm for CIP/VIP pax at most airlines except maybe the meet and greet by the station manager. That said GoI will probably be better off just chartering/buying a fleet of business jets for the politicians and mandarins AI flies around, a much cheaper proposition.

In the grand scheme of things, these niceties have a very small cost. Compare the bill for fuel that AI has and the bill for this stuff and there is no comparison.

That said, in these tough times for AI, they should be focusing on cutting costs and austerity. The fact that politicians asked for this stuff now shows precisely the problem with our government - the people in charge are self-serving instead of trying to help the country. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

That would be my stand too. Many airlines, even privately owned, give complimentary status to powerful politicians, such as Governor(s) members of legislatures, or whomever they wish to be generous too. It costs very little. Meet and greet part is just the Indian way. This kind of behaviour is quite common, and not just in Govt offices.

Things are not as simple as they appear. Why is King Fisher not making any money? What about Jet Airways? Indian aviation benefited from the low hanging fruit. Low fuel prices, growing economy, rising standards of living, easy credit, growing market etc.
Times are tougher for airlines now. That it's a Govt undertaking doesn't help also. Almost everyone, not just the politicians, steals when the victim is impersonal entity like a Govt or a corporation.

You're a VIP?

He might be. We don't know. Delta, an airline far inferior to any in the Star Alliance or One World, certainly way behind Jet Airways and King Fisher, if were to go by the prevalent belief here, meets its DMs in JFK at the end of the jetway, as you get off the aircraft and escort you to immigration, customs, and to your next gate or the lounge.

That's why I'm asking ;)

Also, once I know what kind of VIP he is, I'll know what kind of favors to ask for :p:p

Original K fare revenue booking.
Used MFU to J.
A KA SHA-HKG was oversold.
I took VDB which was an upgrade to F on my TPAC.
My typical buying:
AA- Q/N 95% of the time, with a few G fares when travelling with several people.
AC-K/T/L/W fares.
CX-V/L fares if I want to sit in Y, K if I want to MFU, and if only full fare Y/B/W is available in Y, I pay the difference to J.
UA-K/T/L/G fares and I take the TOD if it's cheap. (I remember YVR-LAX $59!)
DL/-sL/U/T fares.
Total spend on all airfare was >$15K last year, and >$8K this YTD.

One more thing. Making a profit is good. Profit making may not be. ;)

That's hardly anything new, or even extraordinary.

Most of those conveniences and courtesies cost absolutely nothing, and some of them should be offered to ordinary premium passengers as well; some of them already are.

The actual additional cost, if any, is likely going to be less than the value of the Air India (ie public-owned) property that AI staff probably klepto from each flight.
