We are going to rent a car for the 7-day Alaska trip in mid-Aug. I've been with Avis multiple times before and generally never had any problem using AWD and coupons (mostly lower 48 and one time in Hawaii).

It's been a while since I rented from them last time, so I don't know how much they changed in terms of policies. I also saw people talking about the ANC avis not honoring member benefits, and claiming not affiliated with corporate.

My concerns are:

1. How strict are they regarding using AWDs? I tried different ones, and the HP and Deloitte AWD gave the lowest price, but will this location check employee IDs and stuff?

2. If I make a reservation now and then they were not going to give me the rate because of the employee ID check, can I cancel the reservation on site w/o penalty? I used to be able to do this with Hertz, but do not know about this specific Avis location.

Thanks a lot.

1. I've never heard them ask anyone for proof of employment. One of their managers once told me that something like 70% of their reservations have an AWD attached. I certainly would have heard them ask for proof of employment at least once, then, if that were the case. ;)

2. Yes. That's pretty much universal in the car rental industry.

Your correct Alaska Avis is different than AVIS US 48.

With that said, my reservations always have a AWD attached to them. Although probably not much of a discount. In the 9 years I have been going to AK, never been asked about employment. Be advised if your AWD includes LDW, that generally won't apply in AK or HI. Most credit cards include LDW now a days anyway.

Good luck.
