AirTran Airways A+ Rewards - AirTran Companion Pass Question

I have been trying to research the AirTran companion pass as I fly a lot on AirTran. I think it's a great airline and really enjoy the business class.

I know it takes 100 credits to get the companion pass, but I am confused as to how these credits are redeemed.

Are the credits spent solely for the companion pass? So if I use 100 credits I don't get any flights, only the companion pass which I can use with additional credits?

Or can the 100 credits be redeemed for flights, and once 100 credits have been redeemed I get the companion pass?

I believe it is the first option, but am hoping it is the second.

Bummer... Is it valid for 365 days after it is "purchased" or is it like the Southwest CP where it is valid through the next calendar year?
