Qatar Airways Privilege Club - Review: Goldcard in Y-class DPS-ZRH-DPS

Like to share my Economy class flight experience as a gold card holder, accompanied with my wife who has silver card.

To my surprise QR does not keep the seat empty beside you, even the plane is not full.
Check-in staff in DPS was dishonest and told us all emergency seats where taken, which was not the case. In Singapore transit, the ground staff was very helpful and changed our boarding passes with emergency row seats. Nice gesture was that the maitre de cabin came to me personally and introduced herself on the flight from DPS-SIN leg, means they are aware if there are gold card members in the coach class. However, it was not the case on all other legs. Which is actually not a issue for me.

The Al Maha Service in Doha only has the advantage that you can skip the security screening cue on arrival in the transit hall.

The new Oryx lounge is big, nice, clean and has around 10 sleeping coaches. The breakfast offerings in the lounge is a disgrace (Cheap bread rolls), but good coffee.

In ZRH our baggage did not arrive just after the business class bags, rather towards the end.

On the way back from ZRH to DPS, again used the Al Maha and Oryx lounge and the late dinner offerings where far nicer with some sandwiches and arabic dishes. If I remember right there is actually no alcohol served, but I might be wrong as you maybe need to ask for it.

The arrival in DPS, the bags took 1 1/2 hour to get. Even our bags had the gold card and Business class labels attached. This is rather frustrating as this is wrong advertisement from Qatar Airways, as Gold card holder that your bags will be treated same as Business class bags.
Passangers with gold card should insist that their bags get a Business class barcode handling sticker too.

I didn't visit the lounges in DPS and ZHR, but I got the invitations.

By now I can confirm that the food in economy and Business has dropped in quality since this year. I have flown with QR regularly in Business and Economy since the last 3 years and in my last two trips, 1 in C class (DPS-EZE) and 1 in Y class (DPS-ZRH) it actually has dropped compared to 2011.

I hope it's not a downturning spiral going on in QR.

Cheers,
Martin

Thanks for the update. I'm contemplating using QR as my primary carrier whilst based in SIN. I've never used their Y product-only F & C. How would you rate their seats? BTW, I am 6'3".

I am always welcomed on board and asked for my meal preference - even when I was Burgundy.

Alcohol is available in Oryx lounge -except during Ramadan - but you have to ask for it.

Alcohol is available from 1100 to 0200 IIRC.

Cabin service director normally greets Gold pax, and sometimes silver as well. For Burgundy they do take meal preference first as well but usually done by a more junior member.

J on 77W or 772LR is excellent. Flatbeds, nice pajamas, Ferragamo kit.
I had Veuve Cliquot La Grande Dame just 2 days ago from Doh - Bkk. Flight was 40/42 in J but excellent service through out and did not feel sluggish. Balik salmon was great too.

Some things I dont understand, why do they tag bags at outstations for Gold pax flying Y, when at DOH they just rip it off and your bag comes out somewhere towards the last.

I believe it says priority bags are only for DOH station. But whats the point of tagging our bags then?

Also at DOH, why don't they allow us to block seats? Outstations allow it and other carriers like EK will gladly block a row for you.

Just ranting about somethings I dont understand. Otherwise flying out of SIN you get the new 777s and they are an awesome cabin to fly in in J.
