FT'ers,

I need to do FCO-ZRH and ZRH-CDG for 2 persons mid-july.

If I price it up one way it is $1000 Euro per person, yet a lot cheaper if I just book two separate return trips.

Is there anything wrong with this? I'm not going to black-listed by Swiss am I? :)

If you book directly with LX and not a TA I doubt they will even notice. I've missed return flights and haven't had the airlines clamouring to give me my money back. Perhaps you will be denied access to seat 4A forever though.;)

Return tickets are usually waaay cheaper then one ways in Europe. Much better deal...

It seems that way hey. Looks like I'll be booking return tickets and just not getting back on. I might just look at trains too!

No worries at all using only the (first) part of a ticket

Zuerich-Paris by train is only 4 hours - most likely as quick and more pleasant than flying. And you will end up in the center of Paris.
Check http://www.sbb.ch/en/home.html

Rome-Zuerich is 8 hours, check http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=ad1ce14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080 a3e90aRCRD

Once I was buying a ticket at an airport ticketing booth an hour before my flight (my employer messed up the booking and I showed up at the airport a day too late) and the Swiss employee/contractor there recommended I get a round trip to save money.

So no, you should not have any problems at all.

Thanks guys for your help.

I've decided to book FCO-BSL then train to Lucerne as that was my ultimate destination. About 300 Euro cheaper for the 2 of us doing it this way, plus don't have the time to really train on this leg.

Cheers

Maybe you find a better deal on this site for the TGV from Switzerland to Paris: TGV Lyria (http://www.tgv-lyria.com/main/FCK/File/site_en/home/home_france_suisse.asp)

I know that distances in Down Under are a bit different than here in Switzerland, though your initial question regarding ZRH-CDG and Lucerne being your ultimate destination does not really correlate with my Swiss approach to distances :D (obviously you do, as BSL does make more sense, though ZRH would too)

reminds me of one of my Guerilla lips (beat the airline system) posted here on FlyerTalk 11 years ago:

Using only half a ticket

''I would, after having done that first one-way-segment, go to LX and ask them to please annulate my return flight, as plans unfortunately changed and I might even have to take an earlier/or possibly later flight, and I don't want to be a no-show, so that they can resell my seat a second time.

I would politely ask for a refund of my return-ticket, as I will not use it. They will politely refuse to do so.

I would ask then, if they, at least, would please credit me the miles for the return flight that I paid for, but can't use. They will politely refuse to do so.

With tears in my eyes I would than leave ...''

Doesn't hurt to try :D

You might look around for LCC carriers flying from airports near your origin and destination that sell one-ways. There are a lot of one-ways for sale, just not on the legacy carriers.

The other option is to use miles. Some programmes have one-way awards which can be good value given how much those tickets sell for.

Take Skywork Airlines to Bern.
FCO-BRN (Mo/Tu/We/Th/Fr) CHF 149.
Bern to Lucerne by train is 60 to 90 minutes.
