Budget Travel - On the day upgrade

I am looking at flying to Christchurch, NZ with a stopover in Mel in Nov.

Any ideas on when Qantas/Air NZ/Emirates would tend to have their sale. I was thinking of buying a Economy ticket and booking a on the day upgrade to Prem Econ/Business. I have upgraded on the day with Virgin who have offered really good deals.

Does Qantas/NZ/Emirates have good deals for on the day upgrades ?

dont rely on it. Ive had good and bad results from waiting till the flight to pay for an upgrade, ive more often than not found that they wanted to charge the standard difference between the grades to upgrade. This is for singapore and emirates from Auckland.

Not sure where you're originating from, but Qantas/Air NZ will charge you a lot more and highly likely there may no seats to purchase.
