Does the Neverlost unit uses the 12V power point in the center console?
I can't remember, I never paid attention in the past as I never had a need for the 12V power point. But I plan to charge my iPhone while driving on my next trip, so is it possible to do that with NL installed?

I believe it's hard wired, so any outlets should still be there. The vast majority of the time a previous renter has blown the fuse, so they may not be working, if it's important to you check that the outlet is functioning before you move the car.

Definitely hard-wired, via a single cable that connects both the power and the external GPS antenna.
Thanks guys... let's hope the fuse is not blown. :)

While we're on the subject, anyone know what the USB ports on the newer NeverLost systems actually do? They seem rather prominent, with a dock-light around the port and all that.

You can preplan trips and use a thumb drive to transfer your preplanned trips to the neverlost.

I usually use the USB port to charge my phone.

Go to Neverlost.com and you can store locations and even entire trips, and then download them to a USB drive. Then connect the USB key to the Neverlost and it will load those points/trips.
I've done it a few times and it's a little easier than entering the details directly into the Neverlost (especially the Gen IV's), but unless you're doing something complex it's more of a gimmick than a useful feature.

Just make sure you have a copy of the addresses if you go the download or usb route
