US Airways Dividend Miles - Advantage to booking 2 tickets together on award miles

My husband and I are trying to book award tickets for the first time. We will each need about 100,000 miles. I have over 100,000 and my husband has about 60,000. US air is telling me I need to transfer his points into my account and purchase the 2 tickets together. That would be at a cost of about $800 to transfer 50,000 into my account and then I would need to purchase the additional 50,000 points into my account.
Could we each purchase our individual tickets and just let him purchase the additional 50,000 points (right now he would only have to buy 25,000 with the promotion)? We would save the $800 it would cost to transfer his miles into my account.
I don't want to do this if there is an advantage to booking the 2 tickets under my account.
Thanks for the help.

Only tangible difference is that you'd be on separate PNR's if you book the tickets from your respective accounts. That said, a call to Dividend Miles once you're both ticketed should be able to combine the two reservations.

Thanks, we may book separately then to save the $800 fee and then link them together. That is, if we are able to get these as award tickets. If we have to pay, guess it won't make any difference.
Is what it would cost to buy the 40K miles he would need. Seems like a slam dunk to me. Just have him buy the miles, book separately, than call and have the ressies connected.

There is no way to combine reservations. They may be able to put a note in the reservation saying that they are related but that really doesn't do anything.
That said, there really is only negligible risk for booking with different accounts. I guess there's always a chance you might get split up during IRR OPS but like I said, I think that risk is pretty close to nil.
This is a no-brainer - buy the miles you need and book using both accounts.

What is IIR OPS. I'm sorry , but I am just learning the "lingo". Thanks

Correct. The US res system cannot do this.

I completely agree, this is the way to do it.

IRROPS = Irregular operations: delay or cancellation situations such as mechanical problems, weather, air traffic control issues, etc... that would necessitate rebooking

My bad, I've done this several times on PMCO and United and I wrongly assumed US could do the same thing. If they notate the two PNR's and (if necessary) you went for rebooking together, the odds you'll be split up in case of IRROPS are fairly slim.

See this thread.

you can buy enough for him to get to 100k, or for you to get to 200k
If you are at 200k, then both can be on same reservation if essential.
The only prob is if you do not have the tickets on hold to verify that they are identical.
So call, hold 2 reservations today, verify, buy miles for him and call and pay.
