I am trying to do DEL-BKK-SYD-SFO with cash and miles in C class. Was quoted 202 pounds as the cash component and 723.30 as taxes  258 was YQ and 340.50 as airport taxes. ICC will not give me further breakdown.

DEL-BKK : TG

BKK - SYD: TG

Stopover in Sydney for 4 days

SYD - SFO : UA

This is WAY more than what ITA shows.

What is going on?

HUACA, and ask for the fare breakdown to identify the problematic one.

Will try tomorrow. I am inclined to book it and then fight for refund later.

Do you think it may something to do with the Indian Luxury tax?

The problem is the Indian Luxury Tax - levied on all premium tickets departing India.

I believe this is a percentage of a full fare ticket - and most likely the ICC is once again not treating an award as zero base.

Had the same trouble with ex-BGI. Had to get PTS involved.

I think so. Agents have problem with taxes calculated on ticket price, in general. Since you mentionned C, it's a possibility.

I don't think there's going to be much after tomorrow?

Don't know - but does it matter?

Surely there will be some support for issues such as this ?

It is the JN tax for sure...I had this problem too with a flight departing India. They gave me the tax figure and, thanks to reading these forums, I queried what amount was showing for the JN tax, they told me it was around £500+ and I informed them that they should not be charging JN tax for redemption tickets but, if it was a problem to get the correct figure I would pay then deal through refunds.
They called me back when they said they would and gave me the new tax figure minus the JN tax

The total amount quoted, including cash component is 925.30 pounds for a one-way redemption! Of this, 202 is the cash component. Must be the JN tax although the ICC insisted that there was no JN. Is this possible?

Ask them for a tax by tax breakdown. Could be the YQ

Not YQ. As rankourabu says, it's the percentage value added tax. The call centre is incorrectly copying the value from some sort of dummy booking based on the full revenue fare for the ticket which is obviously going to be insanely high for a premium one-way. You'll need to HUACA or get Pre-Travel Support to deal with it.

BTW I can easily beat 723 in taxes - the same issue out of Mexico left them trying to tell me the tax was over 1,000.

Finally, got them to calculate the luxury tax on the cash value of my redemption. But it is still too high. Will check on Amadeus.

The taxes are still wrong. How does one contact PTA folks?

If you paid too much, you need to contact Refunds, either in writing or by phone. Contact details on BMI.com

If this is a percentage tax they used a wrong Amadeus entry. They quoted you a published fare taxes (FXP entry) while they should have used an override element:

FXP/ZO-100P

This way the percentage taxes would go down to zero. Google for yourself - there are many sites publishing Amadeus pricing/ticketing manuals - study these and you will be smarter than PNQ guys:D:p

I guess they prefer to spend their time actually processing refunds! I have had results on 2 bookings needing refunds this way.

Note the person who handled a similar refund for me is now away for a week or so. So they may be even more short staffed than usual. It helps if you write out exactly what you think is incorrect, and what you think would be correct.
