I'm just got of SQ25, and at JFK the check-in agent (swissport) said that I needed someone to sign a waiver for me. I am 16. Is this the case? I was never notified prior and after quite a bit of bickering they allowed me to board, but then I was accompanied by airport staff to the gate... and they took my passport because I'm a minor.

Seriously? No lounge access/hopping at JFK either. They just waited with me by the gate. *Rawr*

Was there every a policy like that?

Whoever made the booking for you screwed up.;)

If your child is aged 12 to under 18 years, you can choose to waive the Unaccompanied Minor service. You can make the flight booking for your child via our website, your local Singapore Airlines office or your travel agent.

Once the flight booking has been made, simply download and complete the "UM Assistance and Handling Waiver form" on the right and contact your local Singapore Airlines office to let us know that you do not require the service for your child. We will then take note of this in the booking details and let you know the procedures.

SQ is rather strict in requiring that "UMs" (above 12) require a discharge form to be signed.

Wow, strange that they took your passport and escorted you to the gate. That has never happened to me in the past before - but the waiver form is usually always asked for at check-in.

Typical SQ covering itself... requiring a waiver form for everything!

For minors, it is a necessity.

Thanks for the input guys... any other airlines that require this?

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I'll be on SQ soon as a "UM"- if the waiver is signed do they still take my passport and barred from lounge entry? Thanks.

My 14yo daughter flew SQ SYD-LHR and back again in August, took the form with her (coming back check-in at LHR after arriving on a BA domestic flight, so had to give them the form herself, no demanding to have parents there to sign the form in person or issues with UM). No issues with lounge access at SYD/SIN/LHR (she is A3 *G too). So I think that you will be OK if the form is completed.

Best to have 2 copies of the form so you can hand one over but keep one in case demanded later.

Make sure you ask for an express card for security at Syd if they do not offer it...

SYD security is pretty painless anyway. Unless you mean one for SIN, or something else?

SYD security is OK but is quicker with an express card. Getting one coming back saves you a wait at immigration too.
