Qantas Frequent Flyer - Points upgrade ex LHR? Connecting flight? Additional APD?

Hi All,

I'm travelling ABZ-LHR-MEL (QF10) on Sunday and have submitted a points upgrade request for QF10. Have a few questions though.

It's indicated that status of the upgrade request will be known 5 hours before departure (although last time I upgraded I saw points deducted 24 hours out). My check in at ABZ will be about 6 hours before the departure of QF10...if I get BPs issued for QF10 in ABZ could I be reduing my chances of the u/g coming through...should I just get the bag tagged? Or maybe the request might be processed earlier because of the connecting flight?

I've specified I'd go for PE if no u/g to J is available (both sectors of QF10 currently show J9 C9 D9 I9). If I do go get J will additional APD have to be collected?

Lastly, would I have been better off selecting QF2/QF10 and submitting individual upgrade requests? With QF10 only is it all (LHR-SIN-MEL) or nothing...so no chance of just SIN-MEL if LHR-SIN isn't available?

Haing BP issued doesn't affect upgrade processing in the slightest. In fact QF is quite adept at ignoring pre-issued BPs and changing the seat assignment. APD is not collected for connections, only if O/D in the UK. In the past QF was not able to do partial upgrades, so "both" sectors must be available for your upgrade to come through, Also there is different upgrade inventory on the same flight for LHR-SIN, LHR-MEL and SIN-MEL (often LHR-MEL is the most restricted, fwiw).

Qantas have not to date collected additional APD on points upgrades.

APD is not collected for connections, only if O/D in the UK. At least for the moment (until the referendum, anyway) ABZ is in the UK, so I can't see what your point is.

The upgrade came through T-23 hours prior to departure of QF10. Happy days.
