Hi,

I'm planning a two person trip from SIN to YVR in september. I realised I only have 140k krisflyer miles and when I called up the call centre they told me it would cost me 110k miles for one ticket.

Is there any way to get it 'cheaper', I was hoping to be able to get two tickets since I believe I can claim two tickets to a US city...

Else I will end up one person on a paid ticket and one on redemption...

Any advice?

You are right and wrong.

The wrong part is that YVR is not in the US, it is in Canada and SQ has no flights there, but Star Alliance has...ie Air Canada.

140k can get you 2 tixs to SFO in economy ( actually 119K miles after 15% discount on KF online website ). Just redeem 2x tixs to SFO and buy another 2x roundtrip from SFO to YVR.

Redeeming Singapore - USA unless it is SFO, LAX, IAH, EWR, or JFK doesn't make sense now, their tickets are 110, 200 and 225k miles for one ticket rt, whereas for SQ it is ~60, 140, 180 (all approx, and economy class from what is stated on this thread)

The fares of LAX (and its neighbor airports)-YVR are usually lower than SFO-YVR. So it could save you money to redeem SIN-LAX than SIN-SFO.

Agreed. I was surprised that the difference is so great!

Yes, LAX - YVR seems much cheaper.

Also, try to redeem the SIN-LAX as 1 -way and LAX-SIN as another 1 way, easier to make flight changes if you have to change your return ticket.

Also remember to buffer some time for connecting to your LAX-YVR-LAX flights, or you can plan a few days sightseeing in LAX in between.

Note that award seats on AC are very few and far between for LAX-YVR flights. You may end up with UA .

After redeeming 119k miles out of 140k, he won't have enough miles to redeem 2x LAX-YVR-LAX on AC / UA anymore. Best is to just buy a revenue ticket and earn some miles for LAX-YVR-LAX.

Anyone wants to give a go for best bang for buck mileage run LAX-YVR on *A ?

If you really want to save cash, you MAY find that a paid ticket from SFO/LAX to SEAttle is cheaper yet. It is usually a $200-300 savings per ticket.

You can then rent a car to drive into Canada on some wide freeways (similar to the PIE in Singapore). It's about a 3 hr drive to Vancouver.

It all depends on whether it offers savings to you.

my family is gonna take the same route in Aug! folks will be on SQ SIN-LAX.
I think you can do what we did, SIN-LAX , 2 pax @ 110,000miles. LAX-YVR on AC is like $350SGD. tax & surcharge on SQ works out to $800 per pax!

that's what im going towards.

SQ tax seems bloody high at $900. AC is like $4xx.

How much transit time should I arrange? 2 hours or 4 hours?
Am I gonna have to check in my luggage again or can I somehow arrange for it to be forwarded?

If you are referring to transiting between terminals at Los Angeles Tom Bradley International, I would allow for a minimum of three hours if doing this on two separate tickets.

The arrival customs at Tom Bradley is a nightmare. US Customs has long lines for non resident visitors.

You will need to get your baggage, clear customs and inspection, then transfer your bags onto the next carrier (and / or check in). Add a terminal change to Terminal 7 for United, or Terminal 2 for Air Canada which will involve a 5 minute walk or 5 minute bus and you will need some extra time. I am keeping in mind that there is usually a 45-60 minute check in cut off if you can't interline your baggage.

my folks will be having a 2.5 hrs transit. but after reading worldtraveller's post, i'm a little worried.

for LAX-YVR try booking via BT-Store, got mine from them.
