Back in the day, remember when we could get about 150 miles per dollar spent on magazines via either Goldpoints or Qantas/ Starwood? I flew Concorde twice because of those deals, each time for about $1000!

The days are not necessarily gone (although of course Concorde is!). In the UK, BA has recently been offering a ludicrous 25 Avios per £1 spent on non-UK transactions for 3 months on one of their credit cards, so a BA First Class ticket US-UK is yours for just £6,000 (equivalent) of spending on their credit card ... like a refundable flight ticket!
The Chase BA Visa deal also dwarfs the deals you reference ... you can get 150k BA for a First Class US-UK by getting an Ultimate Rewards card and the Chase BA card ... no need to spend $1000 at all!
