I would not pencil in Universal Studios for a full day. How about some beach time? Venice beach is interesting as is a drive up to Malibu. I think you should also make time for the Getty Museum. The Getty is truly extraordinary and offers the best views of the Southern California coast. Admission to the museum is free (parking is $15.00 per car). As well, it is a nice place to grab lunch and sit outdoors.
Enjoy your stay in So Cal.

Thanks for the feedback, is one day too much at universal, what else should I add then? You can definitely do Universal in less than a day, especially if you arrive at opening time. It's quite small.
What else to schedule depends a lot on your family's interests.

Don't feel compelled to spend so much time at Universal Studios because you have a "buy one get one free" deal.

With proper planning the Universal visit can be combined with the Walk of Fame, Kodak (now "Dolby") Theatre, and Sign. They are all close to each other.

What are the ages of folks in your family? I'm trying to gauge how much overlap in interests there is for one group going to both casinos and theme parks before offering suggestions.

If you have kids the drive to Vegas and back with a flight on the same day you return might be too much. You and the kids will be wiped out after that drive. I'd personally stay in SoCal and maybe do a day trip to San Diego and the zoo or Santa Barbra.

That is a lot of driving to LAS and back. A LOT of driving and depending on the day of the week can be brutal. Why the urgency to see LAS? What are the kids going to do while you look at casinos?
If you leave LA at 6am on Day 4 and leave Vegas at 6AM on Day 6, that is 48 hours. 24 hours of that that time you will be sleeping or driving (just the LAX to LAS and back part) and that doesn't include the time you'll spend eating, getting showered, dressed etc. Seems like a lot of driving with small pay back.
I'd spend all the time in the LA area.

Although there is a lot of driving, it may not be so bad. I remember several LA-Vegas trips where I was the kid and my parents would stop/exchange seats in Barstow with me sleeping all the way through. Vegas is fun at night, even for kids because you can watch the water fountains, go to magic shows, blue man group, etc. If the parents decide to gamble, they will definitely be wiped out though. I'm pretty sure we went b/c my parents wanted to gamble... some red eyes on those trips back.

The way to do Vegas would be to fly into or out of the LAS airport and save 1/2 the driving. Doing a Hangover style 3-day marathon out and back to LA with the family in tow is a bit much IMO.
