I thought I'd start a thread about this hotel, which opened in early April 2012. I spent 3 excellent nights at this property; here's a report about my experiences as a Platinum Le Club member.

Check-in: I booked a Luxury Room and was upgraded to a Luxury Club Millesime room located in one of the building corners. I arrived at the hotel front desk and was escorted to the club floor (executive lounge) for check-in. While seated in their comfortable and upscale lounge, they provided us with a cold towel and cold drink while they checked us in. It took about 10 minutes even though no other guests were there. They then escorted us to our room. The keys didn't initially work but that was promptly rectified.

Room: Wow! Brand new room, 40 sq. meters, huge bathroom, windows on two sides. Very comfortable bed, upscale toiletries, spotless. Probably the nicest non-suite room in which I have stayed. Room was very quiet. Free wifi worked well, no problems. Room was cleaned well each day along with turn-down service each evening. No complaints, only compliments.

Amenities: Very nice swimming pool, not that large but large enough. Comfortable and ample seating near the pool with lots of sun/shade available. Service was excellent as were the food and drinks served poolside. I highly recommend the mango shakes! Fitness gym was large and staffed by two friendly experts. New equipment of course, so everything worked as it should. Broad range of cardio and strength equipment.

Lounge: Hard product was excellent, with a range of seating options for small or larger groups. Evening cocktails were good although the first night, it took a while for them to find their champagne. Snacks were average, a broad selection but quality was mediocre. The hot ones were not kept very warm. Service was fine but not outstanding. They were well staffed but their newness showed; they weren't working as a team but rather as individuals still learning on the job. We had breakfast one morning in the lounge, and it was very quiet. Fairly small buffet with eggs cooked-to-order. Since the experience was good (not excellent), we tried the 2nd floor restaurant (see below).

Voila! restaurant. Only had two breakfasts here. The buffet was extensive and eggs were cooked well -- clearly better than the lounge breakfast. Attentive and friendly staff and seemingly well managed. High quality with a range of American/European/Asian offerings.

Service: Good to excellent, not outstanding (yet). Note that my expectations are high for Thailand; in many other countries, service would be considered outstanding. I attribute the small service quirks to the newness of the hotel and look forward to more seamless service when I return. I should note that I was greeted by name several times, so clearly at least a few staff memorized my face and name. That left a very favorable impression.

Overall: Very impressed. Hard product is excellent, probably my new favorite hotel in Bangkok. Location is prime. Service was very good overall with a few small quirks here and there. Le Club benefits as a platinum were generous (upgraded corner room with free lounge/breakfast).

I have taken a tour around the hotel and it was luxorious. It is high on my list when i come back to BKK. Two things kept me choosing it few weeks ago: No direct BTS access(Yes, im that lazy) and you couldn't book breakfast for your stay through Agoda or any other service.

Agree with you that the breakfast at the club lounge is rather mediocre. Overall service wise needs a little polish and attention to details. As you mentioned, hardware is very good.

Care to share what was the cost of the room? I seem not to be able to find rates quoted here on the website, I am a Plat btw (if that even helps)

You can easily get rates and book on the Sofitel site. http://www.sofitel.com/gb/hotel-5213-sofitel-bangkok-sukhumvit/index.shtml

I just checked for a month out and I see advance purchase rates of just under €100.

I reckon this will be the best Accor property in BKK.

Why are all the nice, affordable new hotels always in Bangkok? (sigh)

I'd love to give this one a try. It looks pretty sweet to me. By the way, slightly OT - does anyone know if hotel would upgrade Plat guests booking through 3rd party travel website (hotels.com, expedia.com) etc?

It seems I will miss the great service in the Pulman KP Ex. lounge though, so perhaps I should combine the two :)

I called the hotel and asked if they honored tier benefits on pre-paid or travel agency rates, and they said yes. I did not know about the travelzoo rate, but with such a good rate, i think i will try out the hotel (stay will be June 23, 2 nights) will post back results.

How is their english? I am already scared when I call them and want to make a reservation with the travelzoo vouchers and telling them my plat. number at the same time. ;-)
But I do not think they would make a difference between third party bookings and the vouchers. I am looking forward for your experience!

I thought Travelzoo is just another Groupon-like third-party booking company? The hotel has rooms to fill which they apparently aren't able to fill them through their own sales channels, that's why you have deals like Travelzoo's. No you won't be looked down upon like a cheapskate if that's what you implied.:D

No, I mean they probably won't distinguish among third party bookings and they do not care if you made your booking on Expedia or travelzoo....

You speak German, right? It seems to me that a lot of hotel management in Thailand is German, Austrian or Swiss. I hear German spoken often a top Thai hotels, most recently at the IC Bangkok from I think the GM and one of his staff. Also as the Sheraton SGS. Just call the Sofitel and ask to speak to a farang manager.

If it doesn't get you an upgrade- I have had excellent success in Bangkok asking to pay for an upgrade- and if the hotel is not too busy getting some phenomenal rooms/suites for very little extra money.

I called the hotel to book using the travelzoo vouchers. Instead of taking the booking, the agent asked me to email the information, including the voucher code. She said she'd reply immediately. 2 hours later, I called back - it took 10 minutes to find an email I sent. When it was found, she said I'd receive a reply ASAP. That was 8 hours ago. Maybe because today is a holiday?

Knowing Thai administration like I do, I would not take this as a final answer. I would call and speak directly to a reservation manager, or perhaps the GM if you can reach him, to push for an upgrade as an Elite member of Le Club.

But why would a LeClub Platinum member bother booking a room through a third-party agent when 1) the terms and conditions clearly state that the platinum benefits should not be applicable in this situation, 2) LeClub points would not be credited and 3) isn't it cheaper on the LeClub website anyway?

The responses to email's from the hotel are inconsistent. Some reservation staff say upgrades are applicable, subject to availability others not. I just had two replies to an email I sent by two members of staff within 5 minutes of each other saying the complete opposite. An upgrade of 2471.90 NET was quoted by one reservation staff member to get a room on the executive floor.

Well, despite the fact I didn't get a chance to post my review on TripAdvisor just yet, I spent 2 disasterous nights in 2 Opera Suites at this hotel, and I can honestly say - by all means, cancel your reservations if you can, and head for So Sofitel, instead.
The rooms are rather on the small size (for SE Asia) and the Club is decent, nothing more.
This was BY FAR the worst Sofitel I've ever been to. Avoid it.

Also wondering how the Club Millesime is?

I stayed at the Prestige Suite couple of weeks ago. I think it is OK but nothing special or extraordinary. Don't think I will return.

Room
- nice contemporary design
- toilet has separate shower, bathtub etc
- Hermes toiletries
- separate living room with a sofa and TV with Bose system (should be Bose if I can recall correctly)
- no tea, no hair dryer, no tooth brush, tooth paste etc

Club Lounge
- club lounge is quite huge and has 2 separate area (occupies whole floor)
- crowd mostly gathered around the sofa area and bar counter
- drinks and canapes are OK
- breakfast : choice of having in club or restaurant

Club Millesime Privileges :
- complimentary breakfast from 6.30 AM to 10.30 AM (weekday) & 6.30 AM to 11 AM (weekend)
- complimentary after tea (2-4 PM)
- complimentary evening cocktail from 5-7 PM
- coffee, tea, mineral water and soft drinks throughout the day
- late checkout until 16:00 PM (subject to availability)
- unlimited high speed broadband internet in room and wireless internet access within the hotel premises
- complimentary business center service club Millesime
- 1 hour free use of club lounge meeting room per day
- personalised butler service 24 hours per day
- complimentary pressing 2 pieces per stay

Strong words here. What happened?

RJ - I'll leave the full description to my TripAdvisor review, but in general, they put me in a room (one of the Opera Suites), which was not ready yet - and I was certainly the first guest to stay in that room.
What happened? Well, first of all, the service level was abysmal.
The bedroom door's lock was broken and the door was closed shut - took 30 minutes to get it to open (with the personal butler stuck inside and us not being able to have a shower upon arrival). There was no mini-bar in the room. There were no hot water in the room!!! There was no way to turn off the lights in the bedroom. At all!!! They tried to fix it starting at 2AM, but were unsuccesfull. We had to switch rooms at 3 in the morning!
Plus, the restaurant actually charge you for the complimentary "Sofitel" bottle of water you get in the room and in the lounge - some 70THB++. Ridiculous.
For all the trouble I went through, they gave me the first night complimentary (the refund took almost a month to process...), but everyone in the hotel (including the hotel's manager and the GM) - simply DON'T CARE. Other than "sorry for the inconveniences" there was no real customer-care at all.

waouhh . A really bad experience. At Sofitel So, they really care about problems and customers, although I did not face such problems hopefully. I just stayed at the So and will post my review ASAP in the corresponding thread. I had a quick look at Sukhumvit to see how it looked like and I even had a lunch at the restaurant at the 1st floor. I found the interiors really nice and chic.

RJ - we noticed the jammed/broken lock upon check-in, but oddly enough, we didn't find the problematic lights until we went to bed... .
And yeah, I also find the term "personal butler" a bit too much for me, and I've never used her services (I just called reception, instead).

I rather enjoyed my stay there 2 months ago, but a call to butler/reception/concierge was not answered within 10-15 rings. There were times when I just hung up.

I recalled a silly conversation that happened one afternoon. I dialed '0' or 'service' (I don't think there was a button for concierge) -- asking to be connected to the Concierge.

Operator: Sure I can, but what is it you need? Maybe I can help.
Me: I need a dinner reservation.
Operator: Oh hold, let me connect you to the Concierge.

10 second wait

Another voice: Hello, how can I help you?
Me: Hi, could you help me make a dinner reservation, please.
AV: You need to call Concierge for that.
Me: Oh, I thought I was being connected to Concierge
AV: No, this is Front Desk.
Me: Sorry, could you connect me to Concierge please?
AV: No, you have to dial 5555 (or some random 4 digit extension number)
Me: You can't transfer me?
AV: No, you have to dial 5555

I like the room, though :)

Sorry to hear your bad experience. That is quite disappointing.

I stayed there last June, and had quite a pleasant experience. The room and bathroom was quite large. Bigger and nicer than Conrad for sure.
I didn't stay that long, as i have to leave really early, but service-wise, i thought it's fairly decent. And i did like the location at Sukhumvit.

The only problem was they at first resisted giving me upgrade to club floor, claiming it's full (i'm Plat). After a bit back and forth, they did give it to me.
They said it's on new floor that's just opened. Good thing i didn't have your bad experience.

I also echoed the sentiment about the phone service. I forgot what i asked, but it took really time to have someone answer the phone. Maybe they're understaffed.

Currently staying here. As a Accor Thailand first-timer I can only compare with competing properties.

to summarise - I thoroughly like this property, but at their current rates, I can find similar Or better hotels.

The good
- Great location near two BTS stations. Ok, there's no direct BTS access unlike some hotels, but I can live with walking 3 minutes
- The service is very friendly and attentive in both the lobby and the bars.
- There's a skybar on the 32nd floor that isn't crowdy.
- Nice views on higher floors.
- Tastefully French décor.
- Nice lounge.
- Beautiful room. Hérmes toiletries.
- fantastic pool area. Smoker friendly ^

The bad
- Didn't get turndown. Didn't get morning paper... Yes, i am contradicting myself with my previous comment about service
- It's a bit too expensive

How is that? Could you name a few properties that has better price/value ratio like your post indicated? In my opinion Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit is quite well priced. Sure i would like it to be cheaper but THB is historically quite strong against EUR/USD so that tends to push prices higher.

Only a Finn can compress a sentence into one word ;)

OK, a few suggestions:
Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit goes for about 4800++
Le Méridien about 3900++
W Bangkok 5200++
The Landmark, albeit a bit dated, is around 4000++
St Regis about 6160++
Banyan Tree under 5800++
Lebua usually under 5800++
Plaza Athénée under 4k
Swissotel Nai Lert under 4k
Conrad around 5k

The Four Seasons can sometimes be had for interesting rates

I did a bit of comparison and took random dates in May, 8-11 to be exact. Wednesday to Saturday. I used EUR and picked out the cheapest room category for two people.

Sofitel Sukhumvit 366eur
Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit 478eur
Le Meridien (Surawong) 380eur
W Bangkok 457eur
Landmark 265eur
St. Regis 521eur
Banyan Tree 339eur
Lebua at state tower 297eur
Plaza Athenee 539eur
Swissotel 197eur
Conrad 390eur
Four Seasons 536eur

Landmark, Banyan tree, Swissotel and Conrad are cheaper but in my opinion the price difference is justified. Surely if one holds a status it's a different ball game. What do you think?

What a motley mixture of hotel choice. Out of this list, I would only consider Sofitel, St Regis and Four Seasons if they're comparable in prices. Conrad is definitely dated, was there on a mattress run (I know it's pathetic), and wished I was in Sofitel Sukhumvit.

The rate's at Sofitel has certainly gone up since it first open but I think it's still at a reasonable rate that enables it to compete with similar class hotels without undermining its image as a luxury hotel.

But more importantly, are you a Finn or not as remy speculated? :p

Status of course drives these choices. 5400 baht for the IC, which if you have top status in IC is well worth it. And for the same price, using Centurion 2 for 1, you can have the absolute top Bangkok hotel experience at the Oriental. :D
