HI, on our way to Thailand in October my soon to be husband and I will be spending 2 nights in Singapore. We want to stay in the best of the best of 5 star hotels in Singapore - but still be relatively close to the main shopping attractions.

Narrowed it down to the following: Has anyone stayed in either or both of these? any feedback? Any info would be much appreciated!!!

Valley wing deluxe room - Valley wing shangri la

St Regis Suite - St Regis

TIA :)

Unfortunately, you have narrowed down your choice to my two least favourite hotels. I have stayed in both.

Although the Valley Wing of Shangri-La is considerably better than the other wings, you still have to negotiate this monster of a hotel to get there, and you still share the dining options and the crowded lobby.

St Regis looks interesting when you see it, but staying there is, IMHO, like 99.9% of all St Regis hotels - not the best service and certainly not the best food.

The problem with Singapore is that it does not really have a great, iconic hotel, unlike Bangkok, so wherever you choose, you will be making some sort of compromise.

Why are you not flying into Bangkok? It has MUCH better hotels and I also prefer the shopping there.

I had an excellent experience at the St. Regis. Rooms and service were great. True, the food is not the best but in singapore you can find great food almost anywhere, especially in the food courts like Newton Center. not to mention the abundance of fine restaurants. Plus the location is top rate.

The St Regis is well located for shopping, although the best part of Orchard Road is at least a few blocks away. I think this would be a good honeymoon hotel, although be aware that some of their suites (I forget the naming system) are quite small, in particular some corner one-bedroom suites with large foyers. The bathrooms are fun.

I must admit I was myself disappointed by the Valley wing. I didn't find the service as spectacular as I had hoped, the bar was not always manned and a couple of times we basically just waited there for 10-15 minutes without anyone showing up, and on top of it, work in some of the hotel's other wings made for a lot of noise around.

Firstly I wouldn't consider shopping to be one of the attractions of Singapore but if you do want to shop taxis are cheap and plentiful ( except when it rains !) so you can get to the shopping centres easily and quickly from anywhere. Consider one of the hotels in the Marina area or the Fullerton or the new Fullerton Bay.

Depends on the company? ;)

Hopefully will be for a honeymoon!

Wait, what?

Just because you, personally, do not like The Raffles, does not give you the right to deny it its place as an iconic hotel!

The best hotel IMHO in Singapore at the moment is still the RC, esp after the renovation. Go for the renovated Millenia Suite if you have the budget to splurge.

The St Regis used to be good, but recently have dropped a lot. Still can't get use to their "butler" system, as everything has to go thru the butler, so if he or she is not around, you got stucked. Also I am not impressed with their St Regis Suite, which feels cram and have the same decor, bathrooms as their standard rooms. Their upper-tier specialty suites however are very nice.

Transportation is easy with underground and taxis everywhere. So location shouldn't be that much of a problem. Agree with an earlier poster about food in hotels. No reason to eat in the hotel ( except breakfast perhaps ) when there's much better options outside.

.

The Valley Wing has its own entrance off the street which is even on a different road, its own Lobby, driveway etc and own breakfast room. Yes the restaurants are in the main wing but we were there for 4 nights and found ourselves in the main wing twice. I think you can easily stay at the Valley Wing for a couple of days without really going near the main wing.

Raffles?

Singapore is cleaner, probably safer, less hassle but also a lot less interesting. Agree that there is much more to see and do in Bangkok and shopping is much better. Prices are also considerably cheaper.

Perhaps 'iconic' was not the right word vuittonsofstyle should have used to describe the dissappointment that is the Raffles.

Raffles is iconic, fact. However, are the rooms luxurious? Is the hotel private/exclusive? Do they serve some of the finest food found in any 5* hotel? Do they offer amazing service? Are the suites dated?

Answer: No to all except the latter.

I'd recommend the The Fullerton Bay Hotel - fab rooms

I would go for the Ritz Carlton. If you cannot splurge for a suite, do a premier club room with marina view. They are on high floors on the corner and are quite nice. This is also a hotel where the club is worthwhile IMO. The hotel pool is good sized as well in case ypu are a swimmer. I have never stayed at the Fullerton but hear it is quite nice as well. If I want to stay near Orchard Road I do choose the Valley Wing, but overall I prefer the RC for the great views, nicely redone rooms, and pool ( I like to swim laps).

You are absolutely right! I crossed Raffles off my list so long ago that I had totally forgotten about it. It is, I agree, an iconic hotel, but just not very good, and certainly not in the same league as the Bangkok Grandes Dames.

I do not dislike it. I just don't like the commercialised hype that surrounds it. When it first reopened, it was excellent, but no longer, IMHO.

I agree re: Raffles. It's a place to walk through and visit because of its history but not a place to stay.

If the OP does choose the St. Regis I highly recommend the Bentley pickup at the airport. It's the best pickup I have ever had and will get your honeymoon off to a spectacular start.
