San Francisco - SF Giants Charter Flight

It looks as if United is using the same flight number each time for the Giants charter flights. Today, from MIA to SFO, it is UA1806. It evens comes up under Flight Status on ual.com. Aircraft is a 737-800.
If you pull up the flight on Flight Tracker, it shows the same flight number for the previous flight from MKE to MIA, the one before that from SFO to MKE, and even the one before that from PHX to SFO.
In case you're going to be at or near SFO tonight, the flight has an ETA of 8:55 pm. Gate # is not specified.

cool to know how they travel. That said, celebrity stalking is not my thing :)

A little hard to believe you call that stalking. That's a rather strong term. I think lots of people - especially ones who might even happen to be at the airport - would enjoy seeing the team. Do you think it was stalking for all those folks who attended the 2010 parade? Or all those people who go early to see batting practice and get autographs? Or go to spring training so that they can get a better chance to see the players?

Team charters always use the same flight number. There was a post on Flight Aware showing all the flight numbers.

The difference is between going to see someone when they're in their official capacity (ie. on parade or playing baseball) and when they're just trying to get from one place to another.
The waste of money that it must be to charter an entire 737 to take a baseball team (which is, what, twelve people?) from one place to another is fairly depressing, though. This is why I don't follow US sports.
(On the other hand I guess I watch Formula 1 which is an even bigger waste of money. Oh well, I guess I'm a hypocrite!)

So, when fans meet a team returning from a trip and give them a big cheer to welcome them home, that is stalking? Ever since I was in high school, people would meet teams at the plane, train, or bus when they got home from a game. Gimme a break.

Hardly a waste of money. There are 40 players on the roster (25 on the active), plus 12 coaches, 16 staff members, and any traveling FO people and commentators. I'm sure some of the stars have agreements to have their spouse or a guest included on the flight. I would imagine that there is an agreement that each player has either a window or aisle seat.
If I were at the airport, I'd be there to clap them on and welcome them home. If I saw them in public it'd be a different story. Just maybe say Hi if we passed by but not disturb them.
But it's sports - the opposite of frugal spending. Bring F1 back to the west coast!!!!!

Dont forget----besides staff you also usually have the local press and their local TV/radio announcers and their crew traveling on these flights.
the plane usually dont arrive at the gate but closer to a general aviation location at the main airport or at a different airport entirely.
In buffalo (my hometown when the Sabres/Bills would come back to town they would land at Prior avaiation facility which is a northern corner of Buffalo international airport for general avaiation travel.
Teams also are usually exempt from having to go through formal customs process when returing from Canada.
One benefit San Fran has is that they have a United hub where they have extra planes available and can easily coordinate such travel.
I am sure there are similar flight codes for aircraft returning from overseas for the military.
when service memebers and civiliands return from deployments in Iraq/Afghanistan they would take a charterd flight from one of the airlines Delta or United and return them to a few key regional airports where they are then transfered either on military craft or on commercial aircraft...depending on where they are returning to. I havent researched but Im sure there are preset flight numbers for these craft returning.

Why have the same flight number for these flights? What's the purpose?

It makes it easier for us to pull it up on flight tracker - :D

They researve the flight number for the team so they know what the plane is so the airline and airports/FAA knows.
The airlines keep the same flight numbers connected to routes---even if the plane is different...the flight numbers are not some random thing.
