United MileagePlus (Consolidated) - booked intl F award, portion in Y now IN2

Am clearing UA miles, and booked intl F awards for family for 70k one way.

At the time of booking only Y was available for the domestic leg. Now, it appears the domestic leg is available (showing IN2... think that's the right bucket?). Prior to 3/3, I know I can call in and grab those seats. Has anyone tried this post 3/3? I don't want to spend 6 hours on the phone and I don't want to mess up the reservation in any way (there is a leg on SQ). The parents-in-law who will be traveling are not well versed in dealing with problems.

Would appreciate any data pts from anyone that's run into this post 3/3.

Thanks.

You can make all the changes you want if your a 1K. I "think" Plats can as well. Just check the rules under making changes. I think it's Plat and 1K, not just 1K. I've made lots of changes

I had exactly the same situation a few weeks ago and had no difficulty swapping the seats ... took about 30 seconds on the phone once I got an agent. (I suggest telling the phone system that you're calling about MileagePlus and want to request an upgrade--that gets you to the MileagePlus service center when it is open, and those agents seem to be much more capable than the reservations agents.)

FWIW, the agent told me that if I had called in earlier I could have wait listed for IN too so I'd get it automatically if inventory opened up, but other agents have told me otherwise.

It should be possible to do it for free even if you have no status (as its not a date change per the rules), but I have no personal experience with changing an award ticket without status.

Does the move from coach to first have anything to do with being Platinum? If you used Business or First mileage but a portion of the itinerary is in coach, I would think you could move regardless of status, no?

Only because the inventory mentioned is IN rather than just I. :-:

If the premium cabin award was the original redemption and any segments are voluntarily downgraded to a lower cabin there should be no fee for making the change as I understand it, regardless of elite status.

You definitely can waitlist for the higher cabin. It is a very nice benefit.

It took a bit longer than Sykes but got it done w/ a phone call. Agent understood exactly what I wanted to do but had to call the international rate desk for some reason. End-to-end took about 12 minutes, which is much better than the 6 hours I spent last time I called them. And reservation integrity, at least right now, looks good. ^

Sykes and sbm12, when I booked it pre 3/3 I asked about waitlisting in F on this segment but agent said we have to call back when it's available. Not true?

And yes, this was IN2 but I0 so it would have only worked for Platinum/1k/GS I guess.

Thanks all!

Maybe. The waitlisting is only possible on UA (and CM, I think) metal, though this was obviously UA metal since the IN number was different than the I number. Most likely an agent who didn't know how to do it so brushed you off. It happens.

so if (IN) is available, but one is only waitlisted for (I) - it wont clear automatically?

I have an XN flight booked on p.s., so I am not worried, something will open up, but if its IN, it wont happen automatically?

That is my understanding.

Even if the fare class you're waitlisted in opens up, no guarantee it will clear automatically. Good chance actually it won't. Love me some SHARES.

My experiences with this issue have been much more positive recently, FWIW.
