I did a search and couldn't find any mention of this.
CBC News - Canadians can soon bring U.S. rental cars across border (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/story/2012/05/18/north-yukon-rental-cars.html)
This is a welcome change and removes a major logistical headache from planning cross-border travel. It's been mentioned briefly in one of the car rental forums but I figured I'd post this news a bit more broadly for everyone's general interest.
Mods: If this post better belongs in Travel News please accept my apology and move the thread as needed.
Thanks for that - it has been a huge annoyance and unfair. I had rented a car in Seattle and wanted to go to Vancouver and return to Seattle. The legal requirement was to exchange it in Canada and pay all sorts of fees on both ends for reasons that made sense in 1935. I determined by experiment in one case that the rule was not being enforced. But this makes so much more sense. The case for the Yukon saved the rest of the country on this one.

Just read about this also in the local Province newspaper (http://www.theprovince.com/travel/Need+border+finally+gets+across/6686383/story.html).
Had we not read about this (soon to be old) rule on Flyertalk we might have been caught on it also when we cruised to Alaska & wanted to make a visit to the Yukon

As the seller says, you'll need to do this in 2 rentals.
One way from Los Angeles to SEA, and one-way from SEA to YVR (on a car with BC plates, probably).

What if you don't tell your car rental company you are crossing the border into Canada and do a long term rental :).

You can do what ever you like. It is your money, freedom, credit record, criminal record and travel privileges.

Are you implying they are going to fine you criminally for driving a rental car across a border?
lol.

I think 'seller was responding to your cheeky comment:

Your implication with 'long term rental' seemed to be that you were intending to drive the car to Canada and keep it. In that scenario, yes the police would knock on your door :)
