Looks like a good idea, refloat the boat and take it intact to a local shipyard to chop it up for scrap - supposedly better for not impacting the local environment further.
Nice to see that they are also planning to replant on the sea bed to help the recovery process.

LA Times: Life returning to normal on Giglio Island after Costa Concordia (http://www.latimes.com/travel/la-tr-giglio-20120610,0,5945112.story)
GIGLIO ISLAND, Italy — My ferry was full of school groups, delivery trucks and tourists when we left the Tuscan port of Santo Stefano and headed toward the island of Giglio, 12 miles away. I sat on deck with the other foreigners, enjoying the spring sunshine: It was too cold for the Italians, who huddled downstairs drinking espressos.
And then, Giglio's white cliffs appeared in the distance and gradually grew closer.
Except that there are no white cliffs on this granite island. I was looking at the wreck of the Costa Concordia, which ran aground Jan. 13 just outside Giglio's harbor.

On the island of Giglio, they are currently preparing the most spectacular shipwreck towing maneuver in maritime history. Never before has such a colossal cruise ship been raised to an upright position. The vessel is 290 meters (951 feet) long and 36 meters (118 feet) wide. It has a displacement of 50,000 metric tons. To make matters worse, it's lying in a precarious position on a rocky slope and is in danger of sliding into deeper water. The salvage is expected to cost at least €300 million ($387 million) and will set new technical and environmental standards.
Indeed, the idea is to give a clean image to a tainted industry, to make a grand gesture after the grand fiasco. It's also hoped that, if the pleasure vessel can be salvaged in an exemplary fashion, it will send a strong signal to those who criticize the trend in the industry to build ever more enormous cruise ships. For Costa Crociere, the future is at stake; the shipping company has to win back trust. As part of its bid to do so, the company took a SPIEGEL team to view the wreck and presented details of its work for the first time.
Although Der Spiegel probably could have chosen a better translation
There are certainly cheaper ways of dealing with wrecks. The most cost-effective solution is simply to leave it where it is. Blowing it up with dynamite is another solution. Sloane is an expert at doing that. He opens a folder on his laptop that he named "Blow Jobs" and shows films of stranded ships that collapse like high-rise buildings. "Blow jobs are always an option," says Sloane with a grin, "but not for Giglio."

Astonishing the cost will be €300M. I would guess very, very little is salvageable

That's interesting....wonder how many zealous people will travel to see the operation in action?

I found an AIS video (plus summary on the Costa Concordia accident) here http://www.shipcruise.org/cruise-articles/435-costa-concordia-accident. The video shows how the ship veers towards the Giglio island. As to the "Alang" suggestion - sadly, but you're probably right. It was a great liner though.

Wow! Very interesting stuff....Thanks for sharing the video.
Let's keep the update. They will take a while to afloat the cruise ship. I am not quite sure if they ever to rebuilding the cruise ship. I think they have to being fixed the damage. Once they will remove the cruise ship off the Giglio islands and they will have towed the cruise ship to near Venice, Italy.

Here the story of Capt Schettino:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Costa_Concordia_disaster
Captain Schettino (born 1960 in Meta, Naples), who had worked for Costa Cruises for 11 years, and First Officer Ciro Ambrosio, were arrested. The captain was detained on suspicion of manslaughter and for violations of the Italian Penal Code and Code of Navigation on three specifications: of his having caused the shipwreck "owing to ... imprudence, negligence and incompetence" resulting in deaths; having abandoned about 300 people "unable to fend for themselves"; and "not having been the last to leave" a shipwreck. They were questioned on 14 January. At the validation hearing of 17 January 2012 the Court of Grosseto charged Schettino and Ambrosio with the results from the records of investigation compiled immediately after the event, including the first report of the Coastguard of Porto Santo Stefano of 14 January 2012, the summary testimonial information given by the members of the ship's crew, the chronology of events of the Harbour Office of the Port of Livorno, the AIS recording on record, and the PG Annotation of the Harbour Office of the Port of Livorno. Schettino was released from jail on 17 January but was placed under house arrest. The house arrest order included an "absolute prohibition against going away or communicating by any means with persons other than his cohabitants. On 7 February, the Court decided to continue Schettino's house arrest. His pretrial hearing was scheduled for 20 March. If convicted on all charges, Schettino could be sentenced to a prison term exceeding 2,500 years. On 5 July Schettino was released from house arrest but mandated to reside in Meta di Sorrento.
He could be faced a hard sentenced more than 2,500 years in prison. That's too much!!!! They have reduce his sentenced to 40 or 50 years in prison. He doesn't like to spent 2,500 years in prison. Absolutely not! This is ridiculous!! There is no such thing about Italian laws.

He's already over 50 years old. A 40-50 year sentence will likely mean he dies in jail. 2500 is just symbolic. It's the same as sentencing someone for "life + 10 years" - it is meant to show the power of the court.
