American Express Membership Rewards - Cathay Pacific Asia Miles is now a transfer partner for US based MR cards.

Forgive me if this has already been discussed. I did a search and couldn't find anything.
I just logged onto my Membership Reward account for my US based card and I noticed Cathay Pacific / Asia Miles as a transfer partner. Is this new or did I miss something?

Thanks!

Nope.
I get the majority of CX miles through BIS and Petro Canada.

Hmm. I noticed the same thing now as well. They used to have a fixed MR points for a ticket before but never a MR for Asia Miles Swap. Interesting.

It sounds like you are in Canada. I am referring to the USA program. I've never seen Asia miles available and this was just confirmed by the last poster. It looks like this is new.^

I just logged in to MR and it looks like there's a 1:1 transfer option for MR to Asia Miles. Just transfered a bunch to BA for a CX redemption, so hope we made the right move there...

EDIT: It also appears that CX fixed point redemptions are now no longer available.

Cathay Pacific has long been a transfer partner in other versions of Membership Rewards, and it appears they have now been added to the USA version. I assume the official announcement will follow shortly.

...are Asiamiles fuel surcharges on redemptions less then BA?

Another partner, yes, but their redemption chart looks pretty brutal... At first glance it actually looks better to use Avios? Especially right now with the transfer bonus...

Asia Miles is great for multi-stop Itineraries. Say if you want to fly SFO-HKG-India, its only 145,000 miles in business, whereas it would have been a lot more in Avios.

145k r/t?

Looking @ Avios, it looks like:
SFO-HKG - 70k
HKG-BOM - 25k
95k one way, 190k r/t

BUT

190k r/t right now = only ~127k MR... savings of almost 20k MR

I realize that the transfer bonus isn't always going to be there, but for now unless CX allows for more stopovers, etc it seems like Avios is the play for CX ex-USA until the end of May since you can also stopover as much as you like since each segment is priced individually. You could also go via HKG in one direction and LHR in the other and do 2 stopovers in 2 different cities for fewer MR (though you're likely to get nailed to the wall with YQ for the LHR part).

The segment ex HKG doesn't have too much YQ.
ex LHR does, though.

I am forced to use it so I can get 100% miles on CX V class (Last year, I would have used AC, but now that AC put 50% mileage classes on the TPAC routes, I am using CX. If I have to pay YQ TPAC I may as well do it on a reputable carrier.)

Have a look at the " OneWorld Multi Carrier Awards"

http://www.asiamiles.com/am/en/redeem/charts

The Zone 10 and 11 rewards in J are pretty unbeatable. Its pretty much a RTW
ticket since it allows 5 stopovers, 2 open jaws and 2 transfer stops (less than 24 hrs)

I was able to book the below award tickets. The first one in F for 235,000 miles and the second one in J for 140,000 miles and have a third one planned for 160,000 miles.

JFK-LHR-BCN
CDG-LHR-YYZ
YYZ-HKG
HKG-HND
NRT-JFK

HKG-FUK
KIX-NRT-FRA
LHR-JFK
JFK-YVR
YVR-HKG

YVR-HKG
HKG-HND
HND-SIN
SIN-HEL-MUC
AMS-HEL-BKK
LGA-YYZ (in case i need to return to original country of departure... havent confirmed yet)

This seems tailor-made for use of the RT upgrade awards Y->J at 70k or 80k total miles. For example, LAX-HKG-DPS on a CX UGable fare is ~ $1700 RT in coach and $6500 RT in business, and clocks in at 9400 miles, so it is about $0.06/mile in fare value. I'd pay at least $2k to get the flat bed for 19 hours of flying, so maybe $0.03 a mile in personal savings by doing it this way.

For some reason CX treats US AMEX points transferred as miles earned.

I previously earned 24k asia miles by flying. I recently transferred 6k AMEX points over to top up my balance to 30k for an in-asia redemption.

A few days later, I received a Marco polo silver tier letter. Silver tier gives me biz class lounge access when flying economy.

How long did the transfer take? CX has been a Membership Rewards partner in other markets for years, I hope the transfer is instantaneous.

I transferred some of my Membership Rewards to a relative's Cathay Pacific account. The MR were deducted from my AmEx account, but no points appeared in the Cathay Pacific account. It's been over two weeks now, and AmEx says that they'll be available in the Cathay Pacific account soon, but Cathay Pacific has no record of the transfer. AmEx says that its back office will investigate.

Does anyone have any tips on getting this situation resolved? Would AmEx perhaps be willing just to give me the points back, and give up on Cathay Pacific?

Thank you!

NYCommuter's question has been moved into the existing thread because CX is a new transfer partner for Membership Rewards (USA). It will be useful to see if the account name mismatch is a problem on transfers to CX.

I don't know how much of my experience will translate, but something similar happened to me the first time I transferred MR points to Continental. At the time the wording on linking FF accounts was confusing. The first option was something like "Set Up Account" and the other option was something like "Link Accounts." I chose "Set Up Account" (thinking it meant I wanted to set up my CO account with Amex) and proceeded to transfer points to CO. I thought it was weird that Amex never asked for my FF#, but I assumed they had some magical way of figuring out which FF account to send the points to. I waited and waited, but the points never showed up in my CO account.

About 2 or 3 days later I called both CO and Amex. Amex finally figured out that I should have clicked "Link Accounts" to link my FF account with my MR account. By clicking "Set Up Account," Amex had created me a new CO account and deposited the miles there. It took another phone call to CO to explain what had happened. After the CSR understood the situation, she was happy to merge the recently created account with my normal account. Thankfully, Amex changed the wording on their transfer pages to "Create New CX/AC/DL/etc. Account" and "Link Your CX/AC/DL/etc. Account"

My guess is that your points are somewhere with CX right now hiding in another account.

Weekends are for maintenance. American Express has never removed a transfer partner without advance notice, and many partners have disappeared for a day or two. If you need to transfer today I would use the telephone, but I would not be concerned unless CX does not reappear on Monday.

I just signed on to my account and can't see CX or AM as a MR transfer partner. Called CS and the rep said that he still sees the option on his internal system but he, too, cannot see it on the MR website.

After being on hold for a bit, he told me he checked with MR and confirmed that CX was still a transfer partner. It appears to be a glitch with the website but a rep can still transfer points for you over the phone.

They're checking into this and I'll post more when/if I hear anything.

I'm wondering if I should pull the trigger and make the transfer over the phone in case they are removing them as a partner. Doesn't make sense since they haven't been a partner long but I'm wary of AmEx and their points since they still have a tech glitch reason for why you can't earn bonuses.

This is best asked in the CX forum. As far as the CX website goes, you can make changes, just not online. See here (http://www.cathaypacific.com/cpa/en_US/faq/ibe_redeemticket/changecancel).

Just called Plat CSR, was told that CX was still a transfer partner. The CSR told me that she could transfer points over but since I wasn't planning to do so, this was only a hypothetical possibility.

CSR transferred me to MR who confirmed that CX is still a valid transfer partner. But, again, this is only hypothetical as in order to be sure I'd have to actually try to transfer points and I'm not feeling very "guinea piggish" right now. ;)

Neither AMEX nor MR could see any info on AsiaMiles, per se, nor had any insight into what's going on with the website.

So for now I guess the only way to know for sure is for someone to call in and try to transfer points, then monitor their AM/MP accounts to see if the transfer actually went through.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that AMEX CSR told me they would "open a ticket" on the website issue.
