Mods feel free to merge this thread if this is asked someplace else.

I was looking at possibly flying with a dog on SA. I went to the website and saw the cost and everything. That is not a problem. The flight is would be DUR-JNB-JFK. At the bottom of the page though it says:

"Due to infrastructure problems at OR Tambo International Airport, live animals will no longer be accepted as excess baggage on all international flights with immediate effect."

http://www.flysaa.com/za/en/flyingSAA/baggage/travellingWithPets.html#AnimalIdentification

This is after it explains everything about what needs to be done to fly with a pet. So I guess my question is does SA allow pets to be transported on international flights?

Thanks

Have travelled with dogs from USA to SA many times.

SAA does NOT allow pets in the cabin or as unaccompanied baggage -- they have to go as cargo. The only exception is service animals.

Take into account that importing Pets to South Africa is a VERY beurocratic process involving import permits and LOTS of tests and paperwork from your vet and a final stamp from a state vet a few days prior to departure.

The SA Conulate website has a good writeup on what it takes to get the paperwork completed.

SAA at JFK was always very cooperative.
