FTers,
Question; do you have to have four Qantas coded flights to qualify for a soft landing from Platinum to Gold?
Cheers.

Yes. Always Bronze without 4 QF flights.

No one really knows for sure. Qantas do not publish their soft landing policy. So you might get one or you might not. If you don't get one you never really know for sure why you didn't get one.
Certainly a few years ago I dropped from gold to silver without any QF flights. But I have heard that they did not enforce the 4 flight minimum back then. I have heard second hand reports of people not getting soft landings.
Certainly Virgin Australia do have their soft landing policy stated in their terms and they have no requirements for minimum amount of flights. Given the recent increased competition between Qantas and Virgin, I think it is possible that Qantas might have amended their policy to match Virgin.
But essentially only insiders really know for sure.

Actually, Velocity has a minimum flights policy for maintaining membership status (2 flights for Silver, 4 flights for Gold and 8 flights for Platium).

are you sure? If so, I'm screwed as there is no hope of me getting 4 squiggles this year. Plat to Bronze?

That does not come into play until after July this year.

Actually, Velocity has a minimum flights policy for maintaining membership status (2 flights for Silver, 4 flights for Gold and 8 flights for Platium).Looking at section seven of the Velocity T&C's the minimum flights policy is only used in reference to "maintaining" a level.
There is no such reference in downgrading.

Downgrading a Membership Level
7.12 If the total number of Status Credits earned at your Review Date does not meet the criteria in clause 7.14 to maintain the same Membership Level, then, your Membership Level will be downgraded to the Membership Level below your current Membership Level. ...
7.14 The number of Status Credits required to upgrade to and maintain each Membership Level is set out below:
<status credits table>
7.15 In addition to clause 7.14 you also need to fly the number of Eligible Sectors set out in clause 6.20 to maintain your Membership Level. However, that is really a discussion for the Velocity Forum.
SWMBO is a BIS SG and has no QF flights so far in her "year" nor planned between now and her "year"s end in October.

Except for the LTG/LTS holders, I assume?

The only time that a member has to requalify is when current membership expires; lifetime memberships expire when the member does , so never a need to meet annual requirements

this is not correct. I can speak from personal experience that plat can go to gold with no QF segments flown at all.

I have never heard of anyone drop from gold or plat to bronze. only heard of people doing soft landings, one level at a time. so you you'll be fine.

You would think QFF wants to retain maximum membership (which is why Aadvantage doesn't enforce their 4 segment rule).
.......(which is why Aadvantage doesn't enforce their 4 segment rule).
Given UA does enforce the 4 segment rule, it must be only a matter of time before AA does the same.

Why is it only a matter of time, for a US carrier to cancel the differentiation from one of their competitors?

maybe it's new. I guess they could argue that with lower thresholds and so many bonus offers that if you can't complete the required four flights then they will drop you down to the minimum level you qualify for rather than a soft landing.

Well thats disappointing indeed if it is the case. If I'd known about this I would have done 1 more QF segment.
Since my QF status year ended last year (dropping plat to gold) I have done all but 3 segments on VA and will attain plat requal and partner plat with them this year.
Given my end of QF year is today, I may drop to bronze tomorrow? Pretty sad for 2 x gold years and 4 x plat years (plat being all legitimate quaification rather than relying on complimentary requal).
That maybe one less bag I can bring back from the states in July - so drop from 192kg between us to 160kg. :) Cest la vie. No whinge though - if I am not loyal to them, I don't expect them to be loyal to me.
Actually, does the remainder of Qantas Club still kick in once you lose gold? I haven't had to rely on Qantas Club since 2006 so have no idea whether there would be any time left on that.

yes - ur Qantas club resumes with whatever was left on it before you became gold.
I think you'll be ok for the soft landing :)

Cheers... fingers crossed.
Checked my account today and everything has been set back to zero but has still labelled me as gold. Would I have been comped another year?
I also noticed I'm 70SCs away from lifetime silver which was a bit of a surprise, so if it is a soft landing I'm sure I can manage 70SCs in the next 12 months to ensure I don't ever have to have the indignity of bronze again. ;)
Thank God for Woolies as I'll be able to retain membership pretty easily without flying.

It doesn't mean that. When dropping, the status will remain Gold for a few days and then will revert to Silver
If you were going to be maintained at Gold , it is likely that ahead of the end of year , your status page would have been updated to say that Status will be reassessed at and May 2013

The question is since Brisflyer did not have 4 eligible segments in their recently completed QFF year, will they drop to Silver anyway or right down to Bronze?

fair point; I should have said that the new lower status will be reflected in a few days . oops

I'm happy to report Qantas club silver is showing on my profile. Now to get those extra 70 SCs.
Looking for something else just now, I came across this pertinent post from 18 months ago: (Anyone had status renewed early? (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/qantas-frequent-flyer/383787-anyone-had-status-renewed-early-post15512428.html#post15512428))I am able to confirm you DON'T need the 4 'mr squiggles' for a soft landing.
But I think you do need 4 squiggles to receive a 'please outline your travel travel plans for next year to get status extended' letter.
I had one squiggle and was soft landed. But got no letter requesting travel plans, just a 'we have reviewed and downgraded your status' letter.

indeed! it was comment from number_6 that got people thinking there might have been a change in policy!! :)
we have always known that you didn't always need four squiggles to get a soft landing. But I guess YMMV as in the case of number_6's friends.
