Budget Travel - Iceland airfare
From LAX is there a cheaper strategy to get to Iceland? The fares I am finding for July 1st week are ridiculously high, around the $2000/RT range!! I was hoping for a RT fare around the same price as LAX to London...around $1000/RT or so...am I dreaming?

Only two airlines will get you there easily: DL via JFK and FI via gateways of SEA, DEN and a few others (might be able to get a through fare with AS). July is also high season.

One, if you can get to London and back surely it'll be cheaper to fly within Europe than trying to find a cheap plane from the west coast to Iceland. But if you want to have your transfer in USA then find a cheap flight to New York and take Icelandair from there. That's usually their cheapest point.

Unfortunately the sky high taxes that they charge to travel to London kinda kills that idea.
But the Europe idea isn't all bad, as you can fly on Icelandair to Europe with a free stopover in Iceland. Haven't priced this, but it may be cheaper than flying just to Iceland. After all, this is air travel where many things don't make sense.

Fwiw there are no sky high taxes to travel *to* London. Only *from* London (actually the UK in general). And they're not nearly so sky high as people them out to be unless you're in business class too.
Take a look at the airlines flying from reykjavik https://www.google.com/?q=flights+from+reykjavik Iceland Express and WOW Air seem to fly from STN for about 200 Euro return for example (Actually WOW Air seems like their vapourware right now. They start operating next month)

You are right of course. I was talking in general that the carbon tax or whatever it's officially called adds quite a premium over an airport such as AMS.

The fares to London are a disaster as well due to the Olympics i'm guessing... $1400 upwards + $400 RT from LHR to Iceland that results in the same CHEAPEST ballpark of around $2000 RT.. most of the fares were in the $2500 RT range, and this is for economy, ridiculous!
By contrast, I paid $650 RT for LAX-LHR RT in July 2007, I realize there is inflation and fares have increased but I 220% increase in 4 years is absolutely ridiculous!
